When trump kicks the bucket, theres gonna be a celebration worldwide. Lets also take some of that fervor and energy and use it towards helping our communities. I propose that we all commit to, once we have finished our day of celebration, doing a day of service over the following month or two. 8 hours of volunteering with local organizations that help support those who have fallen through all the cracks that trump has widened into chasms, or otherwise help those in need. Divide it up however you need to. Do 4 2 hour shifts if that works best for you, or even 8 1 hour shifts. Do it with multiple services if you want. If you cant leave your house do things you can do from home, such as phone banking, IT support, babysitting for families that cant afford daycare, or translating resource information into other languages. However you need to adapt this day of service, do it, just get those 8 hours in. Because trump has done a ton of damage both to the US's already flawed welfare systems, as well as both the national and international economy. All of that will take a long time to fix, and while they are, stopgaps are needed to provide immediate relief. And we are the stopgaps

Hey kids, you need to start worrying a little less about getting â#moggedâ and a little more about getting â#smoggedâ. This is an Air Quality Index public service announcement.
Engineering teams around the world have been attempting to develop new methods of seawater desalination.
Scientists in China have developed a more efficient form of solar desalination that uses 47.4% less energy than alternatives. After the first year of testing, the scientists believe that at scale it would be able to desalinate water more cheaply than producing bottled water.
The goal is now to scale the technology for use in coastal areas and islands experiencing water insecurity.
gender essentialism is soooo funny bc it's like "this is what women are like" and you're like "I've met women and many of them, if not the majority, have not been like that" and it's like "well women SHOULD be like that" and you're like "why should women be like that" and its like "because that's what women are like"

So a few years back i was walking my dog on shabbos and someone asked me "i thought Jews werent allowed to have pets???" Which baffled me as well bc where tf did that come from and I know many Jews from most denominations and many of them have pets (even ultra Orthodox).
Then like a year later in Hebrew class we were watching an Israeli film largely focusing on Chareidi-secular dynamics and the not being allowed to own pets thing came up a lot so maybe this is just an established Minchag in communities im not in? Idk. If anyone knows more on the subject Id be curious to hear more

Ok only tangentally related but I was pointed to the Canaan dog by a commenter, first off they are so gorgeous, look at them:
Second off we all know by this point that wikipedia on the whole has some biases in particular when it comes to Jews (and if you didnt know...now you do!), and it was refreshing to see that looking through the edit history, it seems good effort to protect from and revert politically oriented vandalism. Kudos to the people monitoring that page! That being said...im in the mood to be a petty bitch so point and laugh at this very silly vandalism
Ah yes, the neutral descriptor of saying it is "right" to forcibly remove a people from a land. Those people being Jews (Yehudim) at the end of the first temple period, from the kingdom of Yehuda. And its right to remove them from the kingdom of Yehuda because they were occupying territory from...who exactly? The modern consensus is that even if the God associated with the tetragamanon prior to its merge with El was originally from Seir or Sinai, the kingdoms of Yehuda and Yisrael and the people within were largely indigenous and the process by which the people of that area became Yisraelim as apposed to Canaanim wasnt one of displacement but ratuer of gradual cultural differentiation from a shared base. Even Khazar theory advocates usually will say that the original Jews from that area and time period are indigenous. And all this according to the oral history of a relatively new suite of political beliefs (generally oral histories arent something a political group has. Or if they do it usually exists within the context of a preexisting narrative. It might not be wrong to say that Zionists latched onto the oral history, possibly even modified or recontextuslized ut...I couldnt really tell you. As I said I didnt know about these dogs until today. But unless you can show that the narrative was invented by Zionists within the context of Zionism, it isnt a Zionist oral history)
Ooooh, we have a bunch of really fancy pedestrian traffic lights in Germany! I need to share:
Starting off with the difference between formerly Eastern German traffic lights (upper images) and formerly Western German traffic lights (lower images):
The city of Erfurt had some additions, like an umbrella or a heart:
Same sex love in Marburg (upper image) and Frankfurt (lower image):

Mainzelmännchen (mascot of the public broadcasting service ZDF) in Mainz:
I noticed something I didn't like about this post. So I'm fixing it.
NAIROBI, KENYA
I couldn't figure out why I couldn't find a still image of the green light. Wanna know why? (It's adorable.) THE GREEN LIGHT ACTUALLY WALKS. It has a full walk cycle. I found a video of it on YouTube.
LAGOS, NIGERIA
Doesn't seem to have them. Instead they have raised pedestrian bridges to go over traffic.
LUBUMBASHI, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
Lubumbashi has us all beat, everybody. We can go home. First of all, it's another animated signal. Second of all, it's a giant robot:

âbread is bad for youâ ârice is bad for youâ sorry im not subscribing to the idea that staple grains that have been integral to cultures for centuries are evil. i love you carbs
And theyre not just carbs even! A full loaf of American white bread (~1600 kcal iirc) (probably one of the least healthy varieties of bread) still has something like 30-40 grams of protein! Yeah thats not all the protein you need in a day but its a pretty decent chunk, theres a reason that people were able to survive on pretty much only bread when necessary throughout history! Its not a complete food for sure but its not totally nutientless either

Since it was placed earlier this week, community members have expressed anger about the Lake Theater and Cafeâs marquee advertising screenin
Since it was placed earlier this week, community members have expressed anger about the Lake Theater and Cafeâs marquee advertising screenings of Christopher Nolanâs new film âThe Odyssey.â
The south-facing marquee reads âBefore there were the Jews, there was⌠The Odyssey.â
The reference has concerned many in the local Jewish community, specifically because of the current political environment in which the Jewish community faces heightened criticism â and bigotry â following escalating violence in occupied Gaza, and many feel that the marquee is antisemetic and ahistorical.
Bob Horenstein, The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland chief community relations and public affairs officer, said the federation has received dozens of messages from concerned community members. The Review also received many emails expressing concerns and many people have posted on social media about it.
âThereâs drawing attention, and then thereâs being offensive ⌠What I wrote to (Lake Theater) yesterday was, weâd received over three dozen (email and calls) at least that members of our community feel very unsettled by the sign and I said we do not know the reason behind the choice of language, nor are we suggesting that there is necessarily any ill intent,â he said. âBut to understand that, given the current climate of rising anti-Semitism, any reference to âthe Jewsâ is immediately suspected, rightly or wrongly, of having nefarious intentions, and that we would respectfully urge you to remove the current language and simply promote the movie.â
Jordan Perry, the general manager of the Lake Theater, said the marquee text would be taken down.
In a text message, he said the point of the remark was to push back on what is constituted as antisemitism and said he was surprised by the negative reaction it has received.
âMy intention is never to influence opinion or fan flames, but to say: itâs okay to raise eyebrows, though I hope my messages reflect a depth of understanding others find in themselves but not always in the world around them,â said Perry by text message. âThrough the media I consume, I believe modern-day antisemitism is exaggerated, mostly as a defense for Israelâs actions in the Middle East and its involvement in our politics, and my intention in referencing Jewish people on the marquee was to prod at everything being seemingly antisemitic with a statement that couldnât possibly be construed as antisemitic.â
He added: âMy intention was not to offend anyone, but rather to push back culturally back on what constitutes antisemitism, to signal, in solidarity, that itâs not about âthe Jews,â that itâs about Israel, and Palestine, and Lebanon, and Iran, and AIPAC. This is my âhumor,â this was the point, intentionally subtle, of what I put on the marquee.â
Perry added that the marquees reflect his personal views, not those of the business, and are âmeant to connect with open-minded members of the community on a personal level, not as a business, and anyone coming to the business should only expect good food and drink, a relaxing environment, friendly staff, with a sort-of cynical guy sometimes behind the register who also runs food and cleans toilets.â
Rabbi Eve Posen, of Congregation Nevah Shalom, connected the marquee with accusations by members of the U.S. Congress that Israel is committing genocide in Palestine and said that a member of the communityâs car was recently vandalized with swastikas.
âNone of the individual moments, taken on their own, would necessarily warrant a public reflection. We live in a world where people disagree. We debate policy. We challenge history. We confront acts of hatred. But when these moments come one after another, layering upon one another in the span of a single day, they tell a story that is impossible to ignore,â Posen wrote via social media.
She also felt that there was no good reason for the Lake Theater to bring up the Jewish community while advertising the new film.
âThe statement is historically false. More importantly, it raises a painful question: why invoke Jews at all? A clever movie promotion could have celebrated one of the oldest stories ever told without unnecessarily positioning Judaism as an afterthought or a comparison. In a moment when antisemitism is already at historic levels, casually inserting Jews into a narrative where we do not belong doesnât feel harmless. It feels like another reminder that our story is somehow expendable, that our history can be rewritten or diminished for the sake of a punchline,â she wrote.
The north-facing marquee also referenced the new movie with the message, âDo you watch TV w/ subtitles? Weâve got The Odyssey w/ subtitles! (Not always, but sometimes).â
Many people commented that the story of The Odyssey â Homerâs original Greek epic passed down through an oral tradition â isnât definitively older than evidence of Israelite tribes in ancient Canaan.
âitâs not about the Jews,â says absolute jerk who put âthe Jewsâ on his marquee. âIâm not antisemiticâ says the fool denying modern antisemitism.
"It's not about 'the Jews,' it's about Israel and Palestine and Lebanon and Iran and AIPAC," says man invoking the Jews, and notably not invoking Israel or Palestine or Lebanon or Iran or AIPAC
Body Horror: Things that cannot happen in real life.
EX: The Thing, stomach mouths, eyes on hands, etc
Gore: Fresh injuries, often severe.
EX: Severed leg, gutspill, deep gashes, etc
NEITHER: Healed injuries and burns, congenital differences, missing appendages, etc. If I could theoretically go to the store and see that character browsing the isles- It isn't body horror or gore. That's just a person.
*AND the amount of people that tag, not just fictional characters, but real human beings as body horror is staggering. Its not solely a fandom issue, ableism and bigotry against anyone that looks sufficiently "different" is prevalent in real life and has devastating consequences.
I see this comment fairly often. And probably somewhere around 99 times out of 100, the person saying it is a Culturally Christian Atheist who is trying to say that they view the Christian concepts of âbelief in a higher powerâ and âfaith in and submission to a specific deityâ as abhorrentâŚ
But what is actually communicated to non-Christians includes:
âI think that all other religions are just reskinned versions of Christianity with a different name plate on the Christ Figure.â
And:
âI hate your culture for no other reasons than displaced trauma and lack of education on my part.â
And Iâve recently been seeing this comment repeatedly on my âMissionaries Are Inherently Xenophobicâ post, and basically just auto-blocking the people making the statement.
Because itâs so ignorant. It ties into the Christian worldview that âCultureâ and âReligionâ are two distinct things that are almost modular, in that you can swap out the âReligionâ module with any other and have no effects on the Culture. (9 times out of 10, these types also insist that Culturally Christian holidays are also secularâŚ)
So, sure. Letâs take this statement and run with it, just to demonstrate what it actually says to those of us who arenât Christian.
~~~
I hate all religions equally.
So, yes, I do hate Judaism just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that means Iâm in ideological agreement with Nazis, I hate this ethnoreligion which has never done me personal harm, and has been persecuted for thousands of years. To me, Judaism is Just A Religion, and I donât understand, and donât WANT to understand that it is also a persecuted minority whose culture gets routinely outlawed by people like me. Since I donât understand that, seeing a visibly Jewish person on the street with their modest garb and hearing their foreign language, I am revolted. I hate Judaism, and I hate JEWS, just as much as I hate every other religion, equally.
So, yes, I hate Sikhism just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that Iâve almost certainly never met a Sikh, and I donât know that they donât seek converts, so theyâre also an ethnic group, the mere fact that they have a Religion that comes with that ethnic group means that I hate them. Their religious beliefs with which theyâre raised as part of their cultureâhonesty, equality, fidelity, standing up to oppressionâare Evil because itâs a religion, and need to be wiped out. Seeing a Sikh man, with his Religious turban and beard, as they give out free food to everyone in need at a Langar⌠well, it fills me with disgust and rage, and I wish to rid the world of this Religious Practice, observed by people who are different than me. I hate Sikhism and I hate Sikhs, just as much as I hate every other religion, equally.
So, yes, I hate Shintoism just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that my understanding of Shintoism is almost certainly bastardized by my Western conceptions, their beliefs in venerating nature and respecting their ancestors are Religious and therefore Evil, and need to be wiped out. Seeing a Shintoist leave an offering to the Kami, engaging in ritual cleanliness, and marking major life events with solemnity fills me with disgust and rage. I hate Shintoism and I hate Shintoists, just as much as I hate every other religion, equally.
So, yes, I hate the Druze faith just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that they are a small ethnic group who are prohibited from proselytism from their founding; I donât care. To me, theyâre Just Another Abrahamic Religion and I Hate Abrahamic Religions, even if there are so few of them. They have a Religion, and I Hate All Religions Equally.
So, yes, I hate the many and myriad beliefs of the First Nations, just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that they were persecuted and marginalized by Christianity, which tried to wipe out their beliefs, way of life, and identities, I hate their Religions, even if those religions are tied to their ways of life. Nevermind that the residential schools, which had the stated goal of âKill the Indian in the Child,â have mass graves of children. I refuse to recognize that this puts me in ideological agreement with Christian missionaries. After all, I Hate All Religions Equally, and if mass graves of children is the price to pay for a world with one fewer Religion in it, then so be it.
Quick clarifying note: I was reading the comments after I posted this and someone pointed out that it is slightly suspicious that the OP seems to have gone out of their way to not mention persecution of Muslims and Islamophobia. I am choosing to believe that this omission is just a complete coincidence and not intentional.ďżź
Update: Iâve checked OPâs profile/page, and Iâm not so sure that that omission was a coincidence.ďżź
Iâm pretty sure it is just a coincidence. OP is Jewish and therefore, naturally, talks a lot about antisemitism, but if you search their blog, they do also talk about Islamophobia.
Iâm curious where you got the impression they left Islam out intentionally?
Well, it wasnât anything particularly specific but, goodness knows on this site you kind of just need to go on hunches. Like, there is one mutual that I have who loves Harry Potter and I was very suspicious that they might be supporting JKRâs transphobia so I checked in to their blog every once in a while to find out if they were transphobic because if they were, I didnât want them to follow me. ďżź I didnât have much concrete stuff to go on, maybe grasping at straws, sure, but itâs sometimes tricky on this site to find out whether you are supporting people that would also support you. Goodness knows, as a gay Muslim I have enough trouble with that.
ďżźďżźThis post ignoring one of the largest religions in the world and talking about far less well-known religions instead, coupled with a meme from earlier down in their blog of a person trying to shove a mattress into a sedan and the caption was âanti-Zionist trying to insert Israel into an unrelated conversation.â [btw: lol, true!] The two things together made me feel like maybe they viewed Muslims as an antagonist.ďżźďżź like, maybe the omission was intentional. Nothing big but in case it was one of the many things that was obvious to everyone but me, I wanted to add an update to it but if this was an obvious thing to everyone else that I had my suspicions. Iâm glad to know that I was wrong.ďżźďżź
Iâm just going to copy and paste the exact thing I said when someone else asked the se thing (that didnât include the insinuation that Iâm Islamophobic just because Iâm Jewish), which can easily be found in the notes of this post:
I considered [doing a segment on Islam], but Islamophobia from New Atheism/Christian anti-theist-types is a feature, not a bug, starting with how they view Christian culture as normative, which includes âtraditionalâ Islamophobia (Richard Dawkins being perhaps the premier example). As such, theyâre used to defending against (accurate) accusations of Islamophobia (some of them will even cheerfully own up to it), and I thought that I would take a different approach and pick smaller, non-proselytizing religions to make the point.
So, since you are so suspicious as to police others by what they donât say, I would advise that you start with your own latent antisemitism.
I meanâŚ. the post also doesnât mention Buddhism, which is also one of the largest religions in the world. Or Hindusim.Â
Rather, using religions that are increasingly unknown to Westerners is the point. Itâs emphasizing how absurd the statement is in the first place. Not only are these Nu Atheists judging the religions they think they know - Christianity, Islam, Judaism - but also ones theyâve never heard of, like the Druze, Bahai, and Zorastrionism.Â
Sooo higher ups have canceled some of our operations without clearly communicating what that means for those of us on the warehouse floor so who knows what is happening today. Currently in the office on standby
