A Taste of Magic Synopsis Attempt #2
Gruyere Casein is a waitress at the famous Heely's Diner in Towyrs, but her true passion lies in cooking. Magic flows through her veins, and she uses it to make the most delicious meals you've ever tasted.
When a young girl named Lizzie crashes into her life, Gruyere has to abandon her life in Towyrs to bring her back home. Travelling outside the city's protective walls, facing the wilderness and enormous beasts in equal measure.
With just her magic, her knife, and her Cheese familiar, Queso, does Gruyere have what it takes to get to that other city? Or is she going to wind up burnt like a bad souffle?
Book Review - The Keeper of Magical Things by Julie Leong
Summary - The Keeper of Magical Things by Julie Leong is a Cozy Fantasy novel. It follows the story of two young women: Certainty, whose only form of magic is talking to inanimate objects, and Aurelia, a woman known for her icy and distant demeanor and advanced magical ability.
Certainty wants to be a Mage, but has been stuck as a Novice for the past six years. She gets her chance, though, when she and Aurelia have to document a horde of minorly magical items in a tiny, forgotten town called Shpelling.
Their assignment quickly becomes more than a way for Certainty to advance in the magical world. They find themselves entranced by the small village and as they grow closer to the villagers, their own friendship grows tooβ possibly into something much more.
Thoughts - I am a big fan of Julie Leong. Her first book "The Teller of Small Fortunes" was an instant favorite, and this one is no different. Her ability to maintain a nice cozy atmosphere can not be understated. I was, admittedly surprised by the romance angle of this one, but Julie Leong does not disappoint.
She really makes you root for the characters you're reading about. The more you read, the more you want to see them succeed and be happy. Watching Certainty grow more confident and Aurelia become less stiff is a wonderful transition.
A big theme of the book is about pressure, about how even the most crushing of expectations don't have to be as heavy if you don't let them. I think there's also a thing about "Happiness is what you make it". Certainty tries to make the best of the situation in Shpelling, doing her best to help people in whatever way she can.
The whole point of a Cozy Fantasy is to feel cozy. It's a genre where, even when you feel like garbage or the world is on fire, you can tuck yourself in and smile as you read about two goofy lesbians dancing around their feelings in a little garlic town, and I think that's beautiful.
Overall - While not my absolute favorite, The Keeper of Magical Things is an amazing book. You'll get overloaded by all the warm, fuzzy feelings and a few tear-jerking ones sprinkled throughout (there is a scene near the end that nearly had me bawling). At around 350 pages or so, it's a solid book that'll let you a week or two depending on how you stretch it out.
Scoring - 8.5/10
Media Review - Kamen Rider Kuuga
Summary - The evil Grongi, a race of superpowered beings bent of humanity's destruction, have been revived after several thousand years. And the only one who can stop him is Godai Yusuke, a professional adventurer and master of over 2,000 skills. Can he stop the Grongi's evil game and save as many people as he can?
Overview - Kamen Rider Kuuga was made in 2000 and was the first entry in the Heisei era; also the first Kamen Rider show since 1989. It was also my first Kamen Rider series that I watched in early February of this year. Ever since then, I have been obsessed with Kamen Rider as a franchise and Kuuga is a big part of that.
Let's start with the plot. On the surface, it feels very simple: monsters kill humans, guy fights monsters. But, there are a lot of underlying themes that really enhance the experience when you watch it. Personally, I believe the main theme of Kuuga is sacrifice. When the chips are down and everyone is counting on you, how much are you willing to sacrifice? Your relationships, your morals, your life itself?
All the characters, not just Yusuke, struggle with that theme of sacrifice throughout the series.
Now, the characters, one of the serious make or break things for a series like this.
Our main character is Godai Yusuke, a guy who travels across the world collecting as many skills as he can, who has a habit of giving people oddly-affirming thumbs-ups. He's a bit goofy, but in a way that makes people relaxed. He's not a clown, he just loves to make people smile; it's one of his core philosophies.
Yusuke helps people, not just by being Kuuga, but also by just being himself. He saves them by lending a helping hand and a willing ear just as many times as he does with a flying kick.
There's a great supporting cast, though no secondary Kamen Rider. Yusuke is mainly aided by his friends at the police and local university. The most ardent of which is Detective Ichijo, a man who could easily be considered Yusuke's closest confidant in the series. It is truly amazing to watch their bond grow as the series went on.
Finally, we've got the villains: the Grongi. I'm somewhat certain people have conflicting feelings on the Grongi for one important reason. They don't speak Japanese and because of that, certain versions don't include subtitles for them as you're supposed to find out what they're saying as the main cast does. I, thankfully, had a version with normal subtitles.
They're decent for what they are. Human-hating monsters are pretty classic, and they play with that in a few decent ways. I'm a particular fan of the final villain for several reasons that I can't really say here because it is littered with spoilers.
Overall - Kuuga was meant to be the world's reintroduction to Kamen Rider, and they very much succeeded with that. It's exciting, touching, heart-felt, has a kick-ass opening song, and hits every one of my boxes. Literally the only bad thing I have to say about Kuuga is that it was made in 2000 and you can very much tell sometimes. Even then, though, it's pretty easy to look past at a certain point.
Scoring - 9.6/10
Book Review - The Heirs by Faridah ΓbΓkΓ©-ΓyΓmΓdΓ©
Summary - The Heirs by Faridah ΓbΓkΓ©-ΓyΓmΓdΓ© is a YA Mystery Novel about the Button Family. 16 years ago, Leontes Button set out to see if 'Genius' is a thing of nurture rather than nature. To do this, he adopted five toddlers from across the globe and intended to train them to be the best of the best of the best.
Present day, the Button siblings are indeed some of the best: Octavius the Maestro, Fola the Brain, Bilal the Olympian, Perdita the Artist. . . and Romeo the Failure. All of them, sans Romeo, are widely considered to be geniuses, just as Leontes Button intended, but behind closed doors, they struggle to hold themselves to their father's high standards.
When said father winds up murdered, well, that just opens a whole new world of stress and suffering. As treachery lurks around every corner and secrets hidden across several years are revealed, will the Button siblings be able to survive this tragedy?
Thoughts - I have somewhat complicated feelings about this book. As a Mystery novel meant for a Young Adult audience, I'd say it does its job fairly well. The prose is well-written, and the characters are interesting enough, but there are several areas where the story falls flat.
I think my greatest complaint lies in the fact that it feels like this is much larger story squeezed into a 300-page book. Some plot points are never expanded upon, some are addressed and then quickly abandoned, almost like a checklist.
That's a similar issue with the characters as well. The story gives us a POV from so many characters, around seven or so, I believe, and they all switch between chapters at various points. It makes it a little hard to form an attachment. They feel like they're just on the brink of having proper depth. . . if only the author had given us about a hundred more pages.
Premise-wise, it reminds me of a combination of The Umbrella Academy (with the family dynamics presented by the Button family) and The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lyn Barnes. The book has a lot of the same beats from both series through its story.
I have my issues with the climax as well. It has what I can only really describe as a rolling climax, where we get little reveals bit by bit all throughout the last tenth of the book. I think it suffers because of that, failing to give a properly exciting finish.
Overall - It's not the most unique of stories, but it's not the worst either. I'd say if you haven't read other books like this, then you'll probably enjoy it, but it might not appeal to people who are more experienced with the genre.
Scoring - 4.4/10

Magical Material: Bone Steel
Bonesteel is Steel that is created using bones of various creatures to supply the carbon. This makes the metal both normally tough, and supernaturally so. When Bonesteel is crafted, It imparts traits of the creature whose bones were used- such as Elephant Bones making the material heavier and tougher, Cat bones making it lighter and sharper, or Dragon bones making it hot and menacing.
Because of this spiritual imbuement, Bonesteel has an impact that isn't entirely just physical, hitting on a spiritual level as well, thus making it one of the few materials that can hit intangible targets such as ghosts or shadows.
Lastly, Bonesteel as a material is capable of being repaired without being reforged, simply requiring a source of Calcium (usually milk or bones). In order to repair Bonesteel, you require bones or milk to be powdered and then lay it into the broken sections of the blade, which will then slowly ossify and repair over the next few weeks.
If you use bones/milk of the same species as the Bonesteel was made from, the repair will be up to 10x as fast. For this reason, Bonesteel is often created at least in part with more common creature's bones.
However, while Bonesteel can technically be made with as many different bones as you desire, each species added intensifies the difficulty by a massive amount. Single creature Bonesteel is remarkably easy to craft, no harder than normal materials, but each one is around 5x harder.
2-Creature Bonesteel is 5x harder than a regular weapon, 3-Creature Bonesteel is 25x harder, 4-Creature Bonesteel is 125x harder, and so on.
Bonesteel is primarily used in 3 ways;
Weapons and Armor, imbuing fighters with the spirits of the bones used
Spellcasting Tools, enhancing the magic and it's effects with the spirits traits
Vehicles, allowing them to have capabilities unavailable to ordinary engineering
Special Notes
Often Alloyed with Cold Iron, using the Blood and Bones of the same creature
Magical Material: Astronite
Astronite is a form of Steel created with Taenite, a magnetic iron-nickel alloy with unique patterns found exclusively in meteors. When done traditionally, this creates a beautiful and strong metal.
When imbued with Mana during the crafting process however, Astronite takes on several unique traits. Once it is treated and settles after forging, it becomes completely immune to heat and is always hot. If you try to heat it it will become red hot, but it will not damage the metal nor make it malleable. Because of this, it's primary weakness is that it shatters if super cooled- but you can piece it back and the heat will fuse itself together once more.
Because of it's inability to be reforged or changed by usual methods, it must be crafted perfectly the first time, and is considered one of the most challenging metals to work with.
Astronite is primarily used in 4 ways;
In Blades, cutting through things with ease as the heat tears apart it's target
As Stoves, able to cook things with ease and stay at a consistent temperature without fuel or get even hotter when needed by simply placing it above a fire
In Winter Clothes, as a thin lining suspended by clay or stone in water, which is then held in very thick leather. These are remarkably heavy overall, but can help withstand temperatures safely even at -100Β°C (-148Β°F). It is recommenced you do not wear these outside of Arctic Conditions, lest you overheat
In Engines or Heating Systems, providing consistent energy and warmth. This is typically used as the backup in the system rather than the primary method, allowing a backup store of relatively low-output but consistent energy in case of emergencies

Magical Metal: Adamantine
Adamantine is a highly dense black metal. It forms from Iron and Tungsten underneath eruptions and large explosions, the heat and pressure melting the Iron and Tungsten down and super compressing them into an alloy, before cooling down over decades or centuries
Due to it's incredible weight and density, Adamantine tends to sink through any soft earth and deposits of it will sink to bedrock if formed in said soft materials
When treated with massive quantities of electricity, It becomes the single most magnetically charged material in the world, drawing metal towards it from several meters away and being incredibly difficult to separate. Due to this, Magnetic Adamantine is incredibly useful but requires careful use.
Weapons & Armor: It is extremely difficult to use due to it's sheer weight and magnetism, however if the wearer is strong enough to still move or doesn't need to move, it can make excellent armor that is almost impenetrable and resistant to most everything
Engineering: Along with basic uses such as house foundations, rebar, and structural pillars, it is also very useful for large things that undergo a lot of weathering such as aqueducts, dams, and town walls. However, due to the difficulty to harvest or make Adamantine only the richest of civilizations can make use of it in this amount

This is Apurva Kokoro! They are the genderfluid half-Japanese, half-Indian Yakuza scion and main character of my story Psychic Dragons.

Hello, I have made a small dice and card game! It is nothing extravagant, but I figured I'd share. It was primarily made as a fun gambling game you can add in for TTRPGs, but it's quite fun to play standalone as well.
I'll be looking to add some additional rules and such, which I'll make an update post about if I do.
Queen's Call
This game requires a d4, d20, and a deck of cards. Aces can be 1, 10, or 20. Number cards are their number, all face cards are 10.
The game starts with randomizing a number from 1-30. This is the Goal Number, that you must get as close to as possible.
Each player starts their turn by rolling a d4, which decides how many cards you draw. Once you have all your cards drawn out, you must make a decision to either roll or not roll a d20. You must decide before rolling whether the d20 is adding or removing to the result.
You receive an amount of points equal to how distant you are from the goal. (IE, if you get a 22 and the goal is 27, you gain 5 points). The person with the lowest amount of points or the most wins (either works!) after 3 rounds wins.
You lose 5 Points if you hit the number exactly. In the case of a draw, roll your d20, the higher wins.
You start with 2 Jokers. They can be spent to re-pull your cards, or reroll a d4 or d20 roll. They can also be spent to make another player do the same.
Since TTRPGs (Tabletop Roleplaying Games) are the thing I'll likely be posting first soon enough as I have several in a playable state, my first proper post will be about those.
I have 5 key aspects I consider when making games- Creativity, Purpose, Vibe, Scope, and Presentation
1: Creativity
This is the most important one by far. In all my games (which I'll make posts about probably within a week) I always prioritize allowing both Players and GMs to have fun with any ideas and allowing as much creativity as possible. I never want games within my Systems to feel like a linear experience or predetermined outcome. This takes precedent over almost every other directive.
Though it is also important to know that creativity can manifest in many different ways, and the best way for one System may be different from the best way for another one.
2: Purpose
Purpose specifically refers to what the System is being used for. Is this System for long term campaigns, or is it for one/few shots? Is this System meant for big groups or small groups?
I like to set out an idea of these (and similar questions) from the very beginning, allowing me to shape the experience of the game much more cleanly and accurately than if I tried to make it one size fits all- no System will be amazing at everything, so it's important to figure out what is important and be amazing at those.
3: Vibe
Equally important is Vibe. What mood and energy do you want to be predominate in people when they play your System? For many Systems this is something as simple as Wonder and Fun, but in others it can be as specific as a harsh fight for survival in a war torn world you can never fix.
For similar reasons as the last, and in the next, setting a good goal in mind for what you actually want from a System is always the first step, and these key factors act as both foundation and guiding light throughout the entire process.
4: Scope
Scope here refers both to the scope of the audience and the scope of the System itself. How widely applicable do you want this System to be? Should it be Newbie-Friendly, cater to Veterans, or both? Do you want the System to apply to many Campaign ideas, or take place in a single world?
While the above mentioned things have a large overlap with Purpose, the other half of it is rather different. The actual System Scope.
How in detail do you want each aspect of the System to be? Do you want it to be extremely well defined and expansive, or loose and small? How much extra portions and content do you want to include with the system?
These are all extremely important things to consider ahead of time, to avoid a project spiralling out of control or otherwise failing to end up in a spot you are happy with.
5: Presentation
Now, when I say presentation I don't mean advertising, though that can also be important if you plan on doing anything commercial with the System. No, Presentation refers to the actual aesthetics you use for the System. This ties strongly into Vibe, but rather than being how you want your players to feel- this is more how you want your players to feel about you and your System.
Do you want a sleek and professional look that immediately makes you be taken seriously? Do you want a silly look that ensures people know it's all for fun? Personally, I strive for somewhere in between those two, but there are other options as well.
Ending Notes
In summary, while each game can have wildly different standards and goals and processes, the most important thing is to always set a good goal and build a good foundation.
This allows your System, whatever the exacts of it may be, to breathe and fill the space you give it- never growing out of control or flopping and failing to meet your expectations.
And, as always, the truly most important thing is to have fun and make something awesome!
