The survey ended up receiving 29 responses, so thank you so much!! I used the ‘numbers’ app to create my graphs, which is why it doesn’t look very pretty lol. If you see that someone got half a point for a question on the flag quiz, that just means that I was pretty sure they knew the general idea of what the flag was, just not the name! (ex: someone said “the boys” for the achillean flag, so I gave them half a point because I was pretty sure I knew what they meant but wasn’t entirely sure they weren’t confusing it with transmasc or something similar!)

Age

I figured this would probably be the most correlated with flag knowledge simply because a lot of older queer people have just lived a lot longer than some of these flags, and there was a very clear downward trend in the data. Since the options on the google form were all a range of four years, I put in the average of the range (ex. if you put “16-20 years old,” I put that in as 18 years old). For people who selected that they were younger than 16, I put them in as 16, and for people who selected that they were older than 31, I put them in as 31 because the app I was using doesn’t allow you to put a range.

Years Being Out as LGBTQ+ in Real Life

This also seemed slightly correlated with flag knowledge, although not as much as I would have expected. Since the sample size of this survey was less than 30 people, it’s unclear whether people who have come out more recently actually know the pride flags better than people who came out 8 or more years ago, and there was a lot of variety here. Similarly to the age one, if people selected that they have been out for 8 or more years I put them in as being out for 8 years!

Gender

22 of the people who responded to this survey identified as transgender or nonbinary in some way, while only 6 did not, which may have skewed the results a bit for this question. However, the trans people who responded ended up having an average score of 8.48 on the flag quiz, while the cis people who responded had an average score of 6.92. Interestingly, there was a lot of variety in the six cis people’s scores— one person got all ten flags, whereas another only got four, and the other four people ended up somewhere in the middle, which could mean that with a larger sample size, cis queer people might have had a more similar average to the trans people.

Microlabels

The last question asked whether people used any labels that they would consider microlabels, or labels that most people would not have heard of. People who used less well-known labels had an average score of 8.43, while the people who did not had an average score of 7.86, which is quite similar. Contrary to what I expected, it doesn’t seem like whether someone describes their identity with microlabels affects how well they know the different pride flags.*

*Nearly 25% of respondents selected “unsure / prefer not to say” and elaborated on the label they were unsure of in the next question. If people didn’t elaborate, I left their answer as “unsure,” or if they elaborated, most of the time I decided that the label would count as something most people would not have heard of. However, I realize that this question was quite subjective, which could have affected the results a bit.
