This Biology Teacher Disproved Transphobia With ScienceÂ
ALSO:
Sex redefined
âThe idea of two sexes is simplistic. Biologists now think there is a wider spectrum than that.â
More on anti-trans arguments as bad science
As a biologist I am reblogging this so hard.
Biological sex is not and has never been a binary. The complexity of the natural world cannot be contained in neat little societal boxes. Stop using science to justify your bigotry.
The complexity of the natural world cannot be contained in neat little societal boxes. Stop using science to justify your bigotry.
âThe world is way too weird for that shitâ should be the new bumpersticker.
The more you knowâŚ.
This is such a good article though
The argument Pinto makes is that the story and the doll normalize 24-hour surveillance in the mind of a child, which makes them susceptible to more passively accept police-state surveillance as adults.
âI donât think the elf is a conspiracy and I realize weâre talking about a toy,â Pinto told The Post. âIt sounds humorous, but we argue that if a kid is okay with this bureaucratic elf spying on them in their home, it normalizes the idea of surveillance and in the future restrictions on our privacy might be more easily accepted.â
Itâs based in a theory that was developed by Jeremy Bentham and popularized by Michel Foucault in which students, prisoners, factory workers and others were thought to function better (for whatever value of better) in a system called a panopticon, in which an individual is potentially under surveillance 24-hours a day, but never actually KNOWS whether or not he or she is being surveilled.Â
Pinto said sheâs not the first person to be troubled by Elf on the Shelfâs surveilling. Sheâs said parents routinely contact her to say they changed the rules of the game after it made their families uneasy. And many kids, she said, often intuitively feel like spying and being a tattletale is wrong.
âA mom e-mailed me and told me that the first day they read the elf book and put the elf out, her daughter woke up crying because she was being watched by the elf,â Pinto recounted. âThey changed the game so it wouldnât scare the child.â
In addition to the problem of normalizing surveillance in the mind of a child, this also forces the child into a situation where they never feel like they are free to simply be themselves; they are forced to be âon their best behaviorâ at all times, unable to relax and make mistakes and do the job of growing up and being a child, because they never know if the elf is spying on them, ready and waiting to report back to Santa Claus that theyâve been bad.
Here is a link to the paper that the article is talking about
My co-worker got Elf on the Shelf for her four-year-old daughter last year, and was so freaked out by her daughterâs sudden and complete change in behaviour (uncharacteristically worried and anxious, while trying to be on her âbestâ behaviour that she never kept up for family or at school) that she stuffed Elf in the garbage after a week, telling the daughter that the Elf had to go back to the North Pole to help Santa with Christmas.Â
Also read the paper linked above, itâs a good one.
I hate this entire concept so much.
the creators of this monstrosity are exactly what you would expect

This is the rejection letter for the work that won this year's Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine:
Don't give up, folks!
I have decided, Iâm basically a sour patch kid. But, instead of being sour then sweet, Iâm shy and awkward then talkative with little sense of boundaries.
Pointless LOTR headcanon of the day: Frodo & Merry both take after their mothers, meaning Frodo looks more like a Brandybuck than a Baggins and Merry looks more like a Took. This is a constant source of petty contention.
(Pippin meanwhile absolutely takes after his father & is the most Tookish looking)
Merry: call me a Took one more time
Gandalf: if it looks like a Took and acts like a Took itâs a Took
Merry: I will END you
Gandalf is the only nonhobbit in the fellowship who understands the minutiae of Took Vs Brandybuck Vs Baggins rivalry & he delights in it, everyone else baffled
Frodo: look itâs perfectly simple. The Brandybucks donât like the Tooks because they play golf and think theyâre better than everyone because they occasionally go on adventures. The Tooks donât like the Brandybucks because they live on the wrong side of the river and like boats. And nobody likes the Bagginses because theyâre annoying.
Aragorn: are you⌠Including yourself in that
Frodo: I said what I said.
Frodo: now the Bagginses donât like the Brandybucks OR the Tooks because theyâre highly disrepectable but also richer than they are. And as far as a lot of the Bagginses are concerned Iâm a Brandybuck because I grew up in Buckland and I have the Brandybuck Profile
Merry: which just means heâs not pug-ugly
Frodo: quite.
Aragorn: this is all ridiculous. Keep going.
Gandalf: Hm now I wouldnât say UGLY but⌠every Baggins Iâve ever met has been perfectly Round or perfectly Square⌠There is no middle ground.
Gimli, baffled: Frodo isnât round OR square
Merry: thatâs because he has the Brandybuck profile
Gimli: so⌠Is he a BrandybuckâŚ
Merry: ABSOLUTE not
Frodo: slander!! Iâm a Baggins how dare you
Pippin: was your father a Round Baggins or a Square Baggins
Frodo: my father⌠Was the ROUNDEST Baggins who ever lived⌠A perfect Sphere of hobbitâŚ
frodo: my father was an absolute UNIT
Meanwhile Sam is sitting by the camp fire going: Donât look at me, this is all gentlehobbit nonsense. My folks have sense

as someone with a bachelorâs degree in english, i am inexpressibly tired of people telling me to get highly specific jobs that often require highly specific degrees. âjust go write for a magazine!â you need a journalism degree for that. âjust teach!â you need a teaching certificate, and also fuck you. âjust go work at a tutoring place!â tutoring children with learning disabilities, which make up the majority of the clientele at those places, requires not only a teaching certificate but a specialized masterâs degree. âjust go work at a library!â you need a masterâs degree in library science to be a librarian. it is actually a highly skilled and extremely competitive field. you donât just âgo work at a library,â you train for years in the vain hope that you will get one of handful of available jobs. âjust go work at a library.â the nerve. the unmitigated gall. âjust go work at a library.â ugh.
serious question, what can you do with a bachelorâs in english?Â
take you in a fistfight, thatâs for damn sure
Me @ myself anytime I open my mouth:
in college there are only two moods:
1. i can do this! after outlining everything i need to do, it doesnât seem so bad. in fact itâs very methodical and easy to follow and i can do it.
2. oh my god its happening. its the end for me. i might as well be dead. everything is due now. i was put on this earth to suffer. i have two essays due in 45 seconds and all ive eaten today is half a goldfish cracker. i can only feel pain
also these moods go back and forth every hourÂ

I needed this.
Thank you to all the people who posted this so I ended up seeing it. I really needed this right now. Thank you!
Yeah⌠Not gonna lie⌠I criedâŚ
We need more people like this
Goddamn it stop making me feel human
The therapist I wanna be.
Text in the image:
âIâm a therapist and keep this poster in my waiting room, apparently itâs saved a few lives.â
I donât like the phrase âa cry for help.â I just donât like how it sounds. When somebody says to me, âIâm thinking about suicide. I have a plan: I just need a reason not to do it,â the last thing I see is helplessness.
I think your depression has been beating you up for years. Itâs called you ugly, and stupid, and pathetic, and a failure, for so long that youâve forgotten that itâs wrong. You donât see any good in yourself, and you donât have any hope.
But still here you are: youâve come over to me, banged on my door and said, âHEY! Staying alive is REALLY HARD right now! Just give me something to fight with! I donât care if itâs a stick! Give me a stick and I can stay alive!â
How is that helpless? I think thatâs incredible. Youâre like a marine: trapped for years behind enemy lines. Your gun has been taken away, youâre out of ammo, youâre malnourished, and youâve probably caught some kind of jungle virus thatâs making you hallucinate giant spiders.
And youâre still just going, âGIVE ME A STICK. IâM NOT DYING OUT HERE.â âA cry for helpâ makes it sound like Iâm supposed to take pity on you, but you donât need my pity. This isnât pathetic. This is the will to survive. This is how humans lived long enough to become the dominant species.
With NO hope, running on NOTHING, youâre ready to cut through a hundred miles of hostile jungle with nothing but a stick, if thatâs what it takes to get to safety.
All Iâm doing is handing out sticks.
Youâre the one saying alive.
I legit cried at this. Iâve needed to hear it put this way. Bless this post.
Every time I see this post I stop to read the whole image. It always helps â even on the good days.
Because it wasnât weakness. It wasnât shameful to seek help. It wasnât pathetic to âcry for helpâ. I was looking for a stick, be that from myself or from someone else. I was trying to find a way out. I was trying to heal myself.
this is fuckin incredible.Â
Iâm sorry if I repost to many of these, but if it could be someoneâs âstickâ then itâs worth it
Signs of a heart attack are different for each gender yet we only really teach the male warning signs. Make sure youâre aware of both and spread it to as many other women as possible!
EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE TAKEN A CPR CLASS I have had to be that person who points out that the training videos ALWAYS frame the âmaleâ symptoms as the default universal heart attack experience, while the âfemaleâ symptoms are framed as though theyâre a deviation from the norm, rather than the primary symptom set that cis women experience.Â
ALSO: I just showed this post to my roommate, who is an MD at a clinic that specializes in care for the LGBT community in the Baltimore area. I asked her whether hormones were responsible for the difference in the âmale/femaleâ symptom arrays. I asked how that would apply to her trans patients (which, she treats a LOT of trans patients). She said, basically, that the longer youâve taken testosterone the more likely you are to get the intense chest pressure and the arm pain, versus the upper back pressure and shortness of breath.
Obviously I am not a doctor myself, consult your own health care provider, etc.
Reblogging this comment because this is the FIRST TIME Iâve ever seen someone address what XYZ medical condition would look like in trans patients. Also this is partly why my great-grandma died: the (male) doctor dismissed her heart attack as basically indigestion, because she didnât have the typical male symptoms.
Oh my God someone was able to answer the trans patient question!
