It had never left his pocket, not since the first day he picked it up. By now, the band was tarnished, scarred from turning over and over in guilty hands. The streetlamps nearby only halfheartedly chased out shadow, blurring the blemishes on the ring and leaving the venue's parking lot to its vast dark.

He looked up, reading the letters of the marquee once, twice, a third time, praying the words would change into something else.

"One Night Only", it taunted in angular, indifferent letters, "Black Canary".

He shouldn't have let it get this far, he knew. He shouldn't have let cities and suburbs become a blurry haze in his periphery while he chased after Dinah's heels like some sorry dog. But he had followed those five words across the country, across state lines and timezones and back again, because he left his better judgment somewhere between Tennessee and nowhere at all.

Or maybe he never had any of his own to begin with. Because he had seen that sign a hundred times already. Because it didn't matter how many times he had seen it, he still hadn't managed to make it through the venue doors. Maybe if he had some sense, he would've gone inside the first time, offered an apology for her to claim or condemn, and that would've been it— no skulking after her shadow through zip codes, no life turning gray at the edges.

But then again, if Oliver ever had any better judgment to begin with, he would have told her he was sorry a long time ago.
