(Honestly if you ever want to know what the next form of capitalist and neoliberal exploitation is gonna be, just look at what sex workers are dealing with at that moment. Even just since I’ve been alive, you have the massive devaluation of labor via piracy, being spied on by the police through the internet, the theft of wages via platform holders, every arbitrary enforcement of policy by PayPal, patreon, and major social media, doxxing and the threat of doxxing as punishment or further exploitation, the destruction of privacy, further extremes of emotional labor, etc. etc.- sex workers dealt with all of that first. There is no coherent worker’s movement without them.)
There’s a quote about refugees by Neal Ascherson that I really love: “The way a government treats refugees is very instructive because it shows you how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it.” The quote applies equally well to how a private labor market treats groups on the margins of the workforce with little protection of their economic rights like sex workers, undocumented immigrants, prison workers, domestic workers, agricultural workers, and contractors. As a general dynamic, it’s smart to watch closely how those with the least power among you is treated by the powerful even if you’re not in those groups, as it serves as a signal of their intentions and potential plans for you.
“The fact that we can sit down and eat a piece of chicken without thinking about the horrendous conditions under which chickens are industrially bred is a sign of the dangers of capitalism, how capitalism has colonized our minds. The fact that we look no further than the commodity itself, the fact that we refuse to understand the relationships that underlie the commodities that we use on a daily basis.”
— Angela Davis
