Helfileg from early Sindarin

Meaning “frost on panes”

This is such a lovely, cool word! The derivation is hel meaning cold or frost as seen in later words like heleg meaning ice, and is related to Helcaraxë.

Fileg means fern so the translation is literally frost ferns which is so evocative!

I love that the Sindar have a word for this.

Fëanor’s color being red is such a popular fanon it’s practically indistinguishable from canon BUT consider

Finwë’s colors are blue and gold (from his heraldry). Fingolfin adopts Finwë’s colors when he’s ruling Tirion during Finwë’s jaunt in Formenos (Fingolfin means it as a show of loyalty, Fëanor thinks it’s presumptuous, because of course. Fingolfin then doubles down on this after Helcaraxë out of spite). Finarfin’s colors are white and gold (also taken from his heraldry) and the natural conclusion is that Fëanor = red because red = fire but i imagine him going for a gorgeous, rich Tyrian purple and gold! Each son uses the same gold with their own twist on it

Look at me trying to make as many variations of black hair and grey eyes as possible. Gonfdolin would be one of the places where I would consistently give most characters some kind of makeup. I just feel like they were all fairly vain and had enough security to start expressing themselves through makeup/fashion and jewelry more like their kin in Hithlum and Himring for example.
