part of being an adult is figuring out what eveyone else's definition of "going crazy" is. to you it is not sleeping for 60 hours, writing 80k words in one sitting and expiriencing enough anxiety to kill a horse. to beth from accounting its buying a ticket to Columbus, Ohio. and to your friend its consuming so much ketamine you lose all of your posessions and wake up with five broken bones in a ditch somewhere and then proceeding to do it again the next day. to your other friend its writing a letter to their favourite actress about how much they appreciate her work. to your neighbour its laughing loudly in a grocery store whilst in pajamas. maya from uni hears the voice of her dead father making jokes with no punchlines and she considers that to be quite normal - to her going crazy would be hearing her husband instead. your downstairs neighbour will take night walks naked sometimes and claim there is nothing weird about him. there are literally no rules to life and all meaning is in the eye of the beholder.

Hey anyone notice how google translate is being pretty liberal with their translations as of late? Takin some real liberties to infer tone.
ask and ye shall receive: When I write in Japanese I usually also throw it in google translate to double check that I'm not using the wrong kanji by mistake, and two years ago it gave me very dry and literal translations.
I was doing it today and noticed it had a pretty strong voice added to the output
For reference, to give a dry translation I would put: Lately I'm into in Hanafuda. Nobody seems to know anything about it here, so they probably wouldn't understand my brilliant jokes. I guess you guys will never be able to understand "Mister November and the Scary Cave".
I have a fluent friend who is able to check my work for me and give me tips on hitting the correct tone (I was going for a comically casual feeling), so I'm confident that I'm expressing the feeling I'm intending. While Google is also hitting the same emotion, I really don't like knowing that it's assigning tone in the first place.
To check if it was editorializing based on informal grammatical choices, I formal'd up the writing to be more polite and remove any non-standard vocabulary.
I'm just like... what is anyone who is translating what I'm thinking into their own language going to think when a translation app decides that it knows my intended tone? When online communication is already so complicated and nuanced? I'm a non-native so I'm spending ages agonizing over 117 characters, but when I'm chatting in English I'm not being so deliberate. How likely is it that tools that 'naturalize' are going to make choices that don't reflect reality and lead to insulting misunderstandings? I spoke with an English learner just yesterday who thought they were being bullied (they were not, the commenter in question was just excitedly infodumping about sociology) because something was lost in translation, and I wonder if it's because of tools making choices like this. I'm just a luddite I don't trust stuff like this. stinks of ai asking me if it can rerwrite my email in a more quirky style.

To get Caroline Bingley's character right, you have to understand that she is a foil for both the Bennet sisters and Mr. Darcy.
She is the more rational choice for Darcy vs. the Bennets. She has education, manners, a fortune, and clearly, relatives that he likes. So many fan fiction authors make her vulgar and/or unfashionable, but she isn't! That is why Darcy enjoys hanging out with her in the beginning; he would not have her at his house if she was embarrassing. Even when angry with Elizabeth, Caroline does not dare go further in attacking Elizabeth at Pemberley. She has self control. She understands boundaries, which Jane and Elizabeth mostly do, but the rest of the Bennet family struggles with. This is why she's a foil for them.
As for Darcy, at the beginning, Caroline is a nearly perfect mirror of his opinions and snobby attitude. She is doing this on purpose as a way of flirting, but it's probably pretty close to her real personality anyway. She's right that Darcy looks down on Elizabeth's uncle being a lower class lawyer. She's right that he finds the Bennet family intolerable to marry into. However, as Darcy falls in love with Elizabeth and then reforms, Caroline's mirror distorts. That shows his growth in the novel. She, like Elizabeth, fails to update her priors, though to be fair to Caroline, she didn't build her knowledge of Mr. Darcy on first impressions. It's harder to change her mind because she did once know him very well.
Side note: this is also why people woobyfying Darcy hurts Caroline as a rational character. They start in a very similar place and love mean girl gossiping together, then he changes. When Darcy's flaws are erased, it makes Caroline look super irrational and much crueller.
Lastly, Caroline is above all else, pragmatic and strategic. She does not hold grudges once it becomes more advantageous to drop them. She would never, ever, now that she is connected by marriage to the Bennets, mock them in public. Because that reflects on her! Caroline would be in London talking up that the Bennets are a very old gentry family with an ancient estate or something. She's going to be giving them a PR makeover to all her fancy friends because they are HERS now, for better or for worse and whether she likes any of them or not. Yes, in private she might be mean, as she is in the novel, but again, she's not vulgar and she has nothing to gain in public. She has manners, she has self-control; being a mean girl doesn't override that.
so today a public health official guy came into my class to give a lecture on disaster awareness and he was talking about house fires and mentioned that the reason people most likely die during a house fire is because they refuse to leave their pet inside or they go back to get their pet. and right when he said this my friend immediately turned his head and looked at me and in that moment I had the most complete and genuine acceptance take over my body. I would 100% in front of my family and Jesus himself walk straight back into some raging inferno that was once my house to go get my fat cat. I nodded back
the best part of this post is reading all the tags from animal people who would also go back to save their pets. like no hesitation. walk backwards from heaven straight back into hell. someone even said they would go back for their fish. amazing
If you are a person who would walk into a blazing inferno for your animal, and your pet has free movement around the house, hereās a training exercise that could help save you both:
1) Set off your smoke alarm or play the sound on your phone (if your home has no smoke alarms, pease get some!)
2) stand BY THE FRONT DOOR to hand out treats
Do this a couple times and then keep it up NO EXCEPTIONS. Accidentally set the alarm off cooking? Treats by the door. Smoke alarm sound on TV? Treats by the door. Changing your smoke alarm batteries twice a year like youāre supposed to? Give them a test run and your pets get treats by the door.
Most dogs and cats will clue in VERY quickly that hearing that specific sound means go to the front door and wait for treats.
If thereās an emergency and even if you leave by another way, you will still know the most likely place your pet(s) is and can direct first responders to help.
You can also do this for any other kind of emergency alarm. My friend had both her cats trained to go to the front door for a tsunami siren.
Well, at least people aren't calling those comparing that one popstar to Karen Carpenter "haters" anymore.
One day I'm gonna get old enough where people think I am so out of touch because of my age. Not knowing that at no point in my life did I ever know what the current popular thing was and have always been clueless.

once I snorted a fat line of nuance and everything started depending. watch out
Letās look at some elephants
*insert Backrooms reference here*
Okay where to startā¦first of all, the trunk isnāt too far off from reality, yeah the opening is too big and too round but they still got the wrinkles on the trunk correct so Iāll give them props for that. They got the tusks pretty close too. As for everything else? Wellā¦yeah š¬
First of all, that tiny round earā¦no elephant in the world has ears that shape, they make it look like this elephant lost his real ears in a terrible accident and had to get mouse ears transplanted onto him for whatever reason.
And the bodyā¦whyās the chest so square??? He looks like he canāt even raise his head. Tbh his body almost looks like a horse (except for his feet, which Iāll get to later), he even has a horse tail. Could the person who described elephants to the artist have used horses as a comparison maybe? That comparison wouldnāt make sense considering an elephantās body looks nothing like a horse but idkā¦maybe the body wasnāt described to them so the artist just made a guess. But yeah, elephants donāt have long, thin, rectangular bodies, elephants are ROUND, baby.
Anyway, I find it amusing that the artist gave them toes and little claws. Elephants actually do have toes irl, if you look at an elephantās skeleton you can see their feet actually have a pretty similar bone structure to a human foot (including toe bones), but we obviously canāt see them due to the stumpy shape of their foot. They do have toenails though, but definitely no claws.
So yeah, they did an okay job with the trunk and the tusks but everyone elseā¦not so much.
Since this post is about elephants, Iām just gonna comment on the elephant here and leave the dragon out if it.
Anyway, like the caption says, this guy has no ears and a castle on his back. Letās talk about the lack of ears first: jeez, you think the first guy having tiny mouse ears was bad? At least he has ears, this poor guy has none š
As for the castle on his back, is there some kind of mythology to that or did the artist just think it sounded grand to have a castle sitting on top of such a massive animal? If itās the latter then that would make sense because theyāre totally right, thatās awesome as hell lmao.
This one has a rounder body shape compared to the first one so thatās definitely an improvement. They still didnāt get it quite right though, it makes me think of a pig more than an elephant, it even has a curly tail. The feet are stumpier this time but the legs make me think of a horse, especially the hind leg. It does look like they added toenails to the elephantās feet, so at least they kinda got that right, even if they are drawn pretty awkwardly (I also just looked up how many toenails elephants have: African savanna elephants have 14 (4 on the front feet and 3 on the back), Asian elephants have 18 (5 on the front feet and 4 on the back), and African forest elephants have 18 (5 on the front feet, 4 on the back).
This guy also has human-shaped eyes that are obviously way too big for him, but honestly Iām okay with that because it makes him look adorable lol. The way heās looking up and frowning makes him look annoyed though, I wonder if heās unhappy about having a castle on his back or if heās annoyed by the dragon. Maybe both lol.
This trunk is smoother than the first elephant and has a similar round opening, also the lower lip is too long. The tusks are shaped pretty well, but it looks like theyāre jutting out of his chin instead of his jaw lol.
Overall, definitely another very inaccurate design but still very cute.
Again, Iām only gonna comment on the elephants here.
First of all, even though those trumpet-shaped trunks are obviously inaccurate, I donāt mind at all because thatās clever as hell lol. Especially since the humans are playing trumpets of their own. The artist mustāve been aware that elephants make a trumpeting sound.
Everything else is once again wrong. Those tusks look more like a wild boarās tusks or like two large fangs, an elephantās are waaaaay longer than that.
The artist was almost close to making the ears look accurate to an Asian elephantās ears but unfortunately they came out looking more like floppy dog ears. The forehead shape also makes me think of Asian elephants.
These elephants have long necks, something elephants very clearly donāt have. These body makes me think of a pig once again, their feet even look like pig trotters.
Obviously very inaccurate overall, but still a cool creature design (especially the trumpet trunk).
Another instance where the trunks look like trumpets lol. Strangely enough, their ears look trumpet-shaped as well, albeit very short ones. Now Iām imagining elephants that trumpet out of their trunks and ears lmao. That would actually be pretty cool, Iām ngl.
The tusks on these guys are pretty accurate. The lower lips are once again too long though.
The heads on these guys are way too small for their bodies, a problem every elephant in this post has had so far except for the earless guy with the castle on his back. An elephantās massive head is one of the most noticeable things about them so itās funny seeing how small they are in a majority of medieval manuscripts.
The bodies once again make me think of a pig, although here the legs are too long and they have tiny paws like a dog or a cat. An elephantās big stumpy feet and big toenails are also one of the most noticeable things about them, why were the people who described elephants to these artists so bad at describing things lol.
The rails are pretty accurate though.
Once again very inaccurate, but I also wanna point out how cute it is that the bottom picture has a mom cuddling with her baby.
Thatās all for now š
IIRC, the castle-elephant thing goes like this.
Medieval Europeans were very aware of the concept of āwar elephantsā, as they show up in a number of classical sources & said classical sources are where they get most of their conception of What Am Elephants. Alexander āthe Greatā is the origin point here, as he often is ā heās said to have captured some war elephants from the Persians, thought they were awesome, and immediately set about getting more & integrating them into his army. Medieval Europeans love Alexander, so now thatās wedged into the zeitgeist.
One of the effective uses of an elephant in pre-modern warfare is as a mobile weapons platform: you put a squad of archers or whatever in a howdah, and now they have the high ground no matter where they go. This is also sometimes the command post, because (1) it provides a vantage point from which one can see more of the battlefield and (2) officers considered riding around on an elephant to be sick as fuck.
Texts that talk about howdahs often refer to them as āturretsā or ātowersā. A military howdah is usually made of wood & leather, of course, but Europeans donāt have a clear sense of how big elephants actually are, so they imagine actual stone towers or even full castles.
This castle-elephant iconography actually survives into the present day, in at least one form that I guarantee everyone reading this has seen:
Yeah, what did yāall think was letting those castles move around the board like that?
Itās like Thomas Macaulay said (emphasis mine):
The Greek shall come against thee,
The conqueror of the East.
Beside him stalks to battle
The huge earth-shaking beast,
The beast on whom the castle
With all its guards doth stand,
The beast who hath between his eyes
The serpent for a hand.
Ironically, the chess piece that is actually called āthe elephantā is the bishopā¦
