This is about Malachi. My little black kitty. My friend, companion, comforter. The velcro baby.
Tuesday the 7th (was it really that long ago?) he started showing some alarming symptoms. He was crying, I couldn't tell if he was trying to poop or if he'd just lost control of himself, didn't seem like himself. Rushed him to the vet, and they thought he'd had some kind of anxiety episode.
Thursday the 9th. At about 9:20 at night, he had his first seizure. Or possibly his second, judging by his post-seizure behavior. It was similar enough to his behavior on Tuesday that I suspect he actually had a seizure then. While I'm trying to figure out what to do, he had another seizure ten minutes later.
He's diabetic. I find the corn syrup and rub it on his gums, in case it's hypoglycemia, then jump in the car and drive him to the closest emergency vet. Through the dark, through a thunderstorm. I wait there until midnight, leave him overnight, and get home at 1am.
Friday the 10th. I call the emergency vet for an update around noon. He had a seizure at 5am, but no further events so far. I can't afford another twenty-four hours at this place, so I bring him home. He paces around the house for a few hours, but finally slows down and seems okay. According to the internet, it's typical post-seizure behavior for a cat. Things are looking up. It's been almost sixteen hours since his last seizure.
Then he has another. Violent one this time. Crashing around the room. I manage to get video of it for a few seconds, to show the vet, before I try to get the rescue medicine into his nose, but I can't administer it safely with how he's moving. He leaves two scratches on my fingers. I'm probably getting them tattooed on after they heal. We rush to a second emergency vet, because the first one is full. They begin to administer Keppra, an anticonvulsant. I have to go back home for his insulin, since they don't have that brand in stock. Leave him overnight again.
Saturday the 11th. He has another seizure at 2pm. The vet explains it could be epilepsy, but he's a little old to suddenly develop it (so was I). It could be a lot of things, including a brain tumor. He's only 7. He's my best friend.
I bring him home. The Keppra turns him into a zombie. He has to have a dose every eight hours. Strictly.
Sunday the 12th. Twenty-four hours without a seizure. Then thirty. He gets Keppra at 6am, 2pm, 10pm. Taking his doses like a champ. Sleeping a lot. Responding when I talk to him.
Monday the 13th. Malachi, a cat who loves food, doesn't want to eat breakfast. I take him on another emergency trip, this time to his own vet where they have his records. The vet says there's a chance he's trying to go into remission. We reduce his insulin, discuss further steps to take, what to expect. I take him home and go to work, coming back home at 2pm to give him his Keppra. All seems fine. The rest of the afternoon and evening passes peacefully.
Tuesday the 14th. 6am dose of Keppra. Eats a full breakfast. Takes his insulin like he doesn't even care anymore. I run home from work to give him Keppra at 2pm. He seems tired but alert, doesn't like the medicine but accepts the treats. Gets lots of kisses from me.
Then it's after work. Close to 6pm. He's been out and about, but doesn't seem to be able to stand up on the linoleum. Which could be the Keppra. I try to give him treats, but he can't seem to find them. Try to get him to track my finger, but he can't seem to see it. Responds if I shake the treat jar, but doesn't seem to see anything. He's knuckling on his left side. His left hind leg doesn't seem to be working right.
Then, suddenly, he's pacing in a circle. Eyes glassy. Expression blank. Walking in a circle, over and over. More corn syrup on his gums, just in case. For a brief moment he seems to recognize me, then his eyes go blank again.
So it's back to the vet. He doesn't meow on the way there. Then I'm waiting almost an hour in an exam room. My parents happen to be in town, and show up to wait with me.
And I know. I just know in my heart. Things were going too good. There was too much hope.
(Good things just don't happen to me.)
There's nothing more I can do but send him on his way. He had some kind of catastrophic neurological event--a tumor that had swollen enough to start shutting his brain down. A stroke. A brain lesion or hemorrhage. It's like he's not even there anymore. The vet says he's not in pain, but if he keeps deteriorating that will change. No one could have caught it. There's nothing we can do.
He was only 7. We only had 6 years together, but they were good years.
Anyway hey guess what things didn't get easier and now I've been through a trauma and I'm stuck in disaster mode feeling like something really, really bad is about to happen.

He was cooperating for now, if only to save himself the pain of another fight. It seemed better to compromise and just put the damn costume on than to risk serious injury by resisting at this point. So he’d let Zhen Wuying march him to another room, which was laid out like a photo studio, and changed into the costume to keep the man happy. If he cooperated like this, he had a better chance of finding a way to escape than if he kept fighting with his captor.
Besides, Cheng Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling would know he was missing. They’d find him.

There were two other beds in the room. The one closest to the door had an older man sleeping in it, though the one between them was empty. And next to Lu Guang….
Cheng Xiaoshi. Slumped over the side of the bed, head resting on his folded arms. Lu Guang raised his left hand and tentatively poked the side of his friend’s head.
“I’m awake!” Cheng Xiaoshi bolted upright, bleary-eyed. “Can you repeat the question?”
He should probably at least change clothes. People did that, right? Even when they were grieving. He opened his duffle bag, touched something soft and expensive, and abruptly realized he’d packed one of Kristoph’s sweaters. He pulled it out, staring at the tiny knit stitches in the delicate blue cashmere, and finally buried his face in it and cried.
His brother was never coming back. Would never see the error of his ways and be the brother that Klavier needed. There would never be some miracle turn where Kristoph was revealed to be working with the police to expose corruption, and the last few years had all been a lie. Everything he’d hoped for was just...gone.

This seemed...excessive. Zhen Wuying’s behavior had escalated far too quickly, in Lu Guang’s opinion. The man had gone from harassing him for a few photos to outright kidnapping him after only a few encounters.
He passed around the room and stopped next to the clothing rack. Lu Guang touched the sheet thoughtfully, then pulled it off with one swift movement.
And took a step back, the sheet falling out of his lax grasp.

Fighting to ignore the man, Lu Guang shoved himself back up, and managed to lean against the wall beside the mattress. He met Zhen Wuying’s gaze with his own heavy stare, tilting his chin up and letting his expression freeze on his face.
No matter how the drug pulled at him, he had to stay conscious now. Had to find some way to gain the upper hand in this situation.
“You know I can just push you down again,” Zhen Wuying said, breaking the silence.
