This whole debate regarding the woman who got an abortion after learning the baby would have Down Syndrome is ignoring one crucial element: the woman. Iβm seeing so much commentary on people with Down Syndrome, how theyβre happy and have wonderful fulfilling lives. And thatβs great! But a woman should not be forced to carry a pregnancy and give birth if she doesnβt want to. I donβt care how morally concerning her reasons are. Educating on disabilities to ensure that women are fully informed before making a decision on whether to continue a pregnancy is amazingβ¦but it needs to be done without shaming her for choosing to abort.
Meanwhile thereβs a family on TikTok who has a child with Angelman syndrome and who recently posted a video of how they have to jerryrig their car so that child doesnβt hurt any of his other siblings in the back of the car. The child with Angelman syndrome is, according to the parents, in capable of respecting boundaries, prone to violence, and super-humanly strong for his age.
Obv DS and Angelman are not the same BUT that comment section was full of people who were basically horrified at what having a disabled child does to every other child in the family or self reporting how harmful having a disabled sibling was to them.
Iβm not gonna weigh in on my opinion on this one BUT I feel like this is an example of when itβs in the womb, everyone breaks out about aborting a fetus who will likely be disabled, but once itβs out of the womb, then suddenly the script flips and now suddenly all anyone cares about it the impact on the parents, the impact on the other children, what will happen to that child after the parents die etc.
Almost like women who get abortions take those things into consideration and are all nearly monsters who want to do eugenics
Donβt get pregnant if you canβt accept that your child might not be βnormalβ you fucking twits
Youβre 15. Normally I donβt seek out interactions with teenagers but I just wanted to say that the real world is a lot more complicated than that.
