In that way you, your spouse and your guests all hold one another accountable for supporting the bond and commitment in the future. Even civil ceremonies in front of the justice of the peace require a witness (except Tx go figure?). The reception is the fun party, but the ceremony itself is the cementing of the bond and commitment.
