what doesnât kill you makes your nervous system more sensitive for the rest of your life
what doesn't kill you makes you unable to understand basic human emotions
@strawberry-muffin-crisis
I gotta say, I picked up the testaments novel, and itâs just so⌠devoid of nuance and depth compared to the show. I really expected the opposite. Wild.
hey it's me black mold. thanks for running your window air conditioner all summer. whatever you do, do not regularly clean the removable filter. that's not necessary
you should also never ever unplug the air conditioner and stick a flashlight in the vent that blows air to see if we're in there. it's very bad, that place should not be checked
and whatever you do, if you've already made the mistake of unplugging it, don't remove it from the window for cleaning if possible. and whether it's possible to remove the unit or not, don't carefully disassemble the front panel, document where the screws go and plastic bits go, and open up the vent more to be able to get into it easily
as black mold, i'm an expert on this. you should heed my warnings: now, if you've somehow made the mistake of doing all of the above, you should not use warm water and dish soap to CLEAN the inside of the vent thoroughly. DON'T ever use a bottle brush to get into the hard to reach places. and certainly don't rinse and dry the cleaned area before carefully putting it back together
there's nothing wrong with us, black mold. we don't cause or exacerbate breathing conditions like asthma or other illnesses. it's cool, we're cool
furthermore, if you're capable of removing the window unit, DONT take a hose with the same soapy water and wash the portion of the window unit that sits outside the window and is therefore weatherproofed.
whatever you do, don't allow the air conditioner to dry before plugging it back in and turning it on again
and if you have a central air conditioner, you will definitely never ever consult a manual or sources online to perform a similar cleaning procedure on the cooling unit outside.
lastly, if you're physically unable to do the things we (the black mold) warned you not to do above, you should never ever ask someone to help you or hire a service to do it.
Also even if you do not have the time, space or ability to do some of the the things in the OP, definitely do not clean the coils (the awful sharp flat stacks of metal) with foaming coil cleaner. That removes the beneficial black mold (us) holding the unit together. It will be completely unsatisfying to watch the foam clean out the Super Beneficial Black Mold, Mildew, Hair, Lint & Dust Combo⢠(that is not only a health hazard but making the unit less efficient at cooling necessary for air conditioner function) and leave the metal shiny.
It is a lot of elbow grease and definitely not just spraying a can and waiting. Especially do not use the ones that are self rinsing via the natural condensation of water around the coils where all you have to do is let the foam settle a couple hours before turning the unit back on. These foaming cleaners are also terrible to use on the removable air intake vent covers. You definitely do not just have to spray the opposite side of all the trapped shit on the plastic mesh and let the foam push it off. Also that stuff on the cover is great for you and your air conditioner.
Trust us. We, the mold, know much more about air conditioners than the people who make aerosol cans you can pick up for like $8 at home depot. Definitely do not do this a couple times a season.
i literally love shunamite so much she's such an amazing character im so glad they turned her character into this instead of what she was in the books

Modesty in dress is essentially impossible if youâre a woman. Modesty is about not bringing attention to yourself, but that is not achievable at all. No matter what you wear people will look. Thatâs one reason niqab is just pretentious virtue signalling in the west, how is it more modest to draw MORE attention to yourself by standing out that much? Generally i just feel like anyone who makes a point of being âmodestâ is virtue signalling and seeking validation from other religious people typically.
i used to think this a lot when i was orthodox esp when the women would start wearing headscarves out in public just to flex on people. one of them decided that the most orthodox thing to do is to wear ukrainian folk outfits she ordered off of temu or whatever plus a headscarf (she was brazilian too?) and someone i know ran into her at a store and spotted her from halfway across the store because of it. it's literally more modest to wear jeans and a graphic t shirt than it is to wear potato sacks and weird shit on your head. bc no one is going to notice you in public when you're wearing jeans. no one will even remember you. everyone will remember the brazilian chick in a full ukrainian folk outfit with a hijab on though.
kinda off topic, but when i worked at cracker barrell in a small town, i got seated with a family of mennonites, but before i could greet them the elder waitress (exactly what you're picturing, just in a cracker barrell instead of a roadside diner in a 70s-80's film. pick any reba song) yanked me to the side by my elbow and whispered, ominously, that "that family runs (my town's name). they own [lists off local businesses] and the only time they go out to eat is at this restaurant. be REALLY careful with the order. they've got all kinds of rules about it. but if you take good care of them, they'll tip you nice". they were dead silent, except when the men ordered. i felt like i was on trial. it was at the end of a busy shift, finally out of the weeds, and i hadn't had a smoke break in ages cause the line cook was SmokingSmoking ifykwm in the bathroom (you weren't allowed to smoke or vape within 100 feet of the building or some such horse shit so we just did it in the employee bathrooms) so the whole experience felt like a fever dream. a pioneer purgatory. too southern gothic in a way that made my skin crawl like the end episode of the first season of true detective. they tipped me 14 dollars and 50 cents.
every time someone mentions the little prince I almost forget itâs a childrenâs book because I literally cannot get through the part about being tamed without crying
âTo me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the worldâŚâ But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life . I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the colour of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheatâŚâ The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time. âPlease, tame me!â he said.â YeahâŚâŚâŚ..
So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near â
âAh,â said the fox, âI shall cry.â
âIt is your own fault,â said the little prince. âI never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame youâŚâ
âYes, that is so,â said the fox.
âBut now you are going to cry!â said the little prince.
âYes, that is so,â said the fox.
âThen it has done you no good at all!â
âIt has done me good,â said the fox, âbecause of the color of the wheat fields.â

The Testaments Season Finale thoughts below the break
Wow! What a ride! There were so many points in the episode which I found myself thinking, "Damn. They really underestimated teenaged young women." So Daisy's letter at the end really was just a nice cap on the episode.
There is so much to unpack. It seems I was wrong. Becca will survive another season. Her mother took her place. And the whole event seems to be the pivot point to the plum's deconstructing the world as they know it.
I absolutely love the way the actress plays. Agnes/Hannah. It's a quieter bravery than June. Honestly, Luke is not getting enough credit I think. Luke had that quiet patient resilience that I'm seeing shine through Anges/Hannah. Also, "thinks she's funny but actually isn't." Just screams Luke.
We also got some interesting world building moments. The Aunts have sedatives on tap at the ready for these girls to go through with their marriages and it seems to last long enough into the wedding night. In some ways, I feel this might be an act of Mercy in the world of Gilead, but it also just creates this horrible pit in my stomach for these young women who have gone through these horrible rituals.
Becca's mom taking her daughter's place reminded me that this is very much Gilead. The same Gilead we saw in The Handmaid's Tale. In many ways this season felt easier to consume because we weren't confronting body horror more episodes than not, but the finale did an excellent job of setting the stage for next season.
The conclusion promised us more rebellion and ultimately more blood. There was so much foreshadowing and so many throwbacks. Paula dropping the bit of lore that Commander Mackenzie refused to allow Gilead to kill Agnes to punish June was telling. I think Paula needs to remember that. She seems to forget how much love there can be between a "father" and his "daughter" (abductor and abductee).
I am really looking forward to next season. I think I'll re-read the novel to help get me through the wait.
The Testaments S01E08 Broken
Only Jesus Christ can make you clean.
One thing that worries me about the use of AI is whether or not it can worsen people's dementia and alzheimer's in the future. When my grandmother was first diagnosed, we got her math activity books. Now, my grandmother never had a formal education, but we did our best to keep her sharp, get her to do math and writing activity books, sudokus, playing board games that required some level of strategizing with her. Her family is prone to alzheimer's and dementia (both her siblings had it and deteriorated very very very quickly, which yeah, scares the shit out of me being her granddaughter) but she was the one whose mind lasted the longest, she only passed away two years ago, at 88, ten whole years after her initial diagnosis and sure, she had forgotten things, recipes and where she put her glasses and appointments, but she never forgot any of us, ten whole years in, she still remembered us. Now, this may have been luck, but doctors always said the constant mental work + companionship + medicine helped her a lot. So I'm thinking, these people who are now relying on AI for everything, from email-writing to thinking what's for dinner to casual conversations, I've even seen people rely on it to calculate what time they should leave their house if they need to be at a place at a specific time and their commute lasts X number of minutes. As if that's not... the simplest math operation possible? You shouldn't even need a calculator for that!!! Idk I don't know how long it'll take us to see the effects of this + exposure to brain-rotting short form content that is completely meaningless + people addicted to right-wing conspiracy style media. Idk I'm very worried. Please, read, read complicated books! Take up a book on philosophy and try to decipher it and make your own opinions on it, please buy a maths activity book and relearn how to do math, please get a hobby that involves lots of thinking and concentrating. PLEASE!!!
As a neurologist, Iâll give you the pretty name for it: cognitive reserve.
The way I explain it to my patients is that our neurons donât regenerate. They make connections with each other and thatâs it. If you donât use your brain, they make fewer connections and, if one of them dies, youâre gonna miss it, because that was the only one that knew how to do X. Now, if each one of them has many, many connections, you wonât notice the difference when one of them dies. The others pick up the slack.
As of 2024, 45% of dementia risk factors are modifiable. Relevant to this conversation, 5% for less education and 5% for social isolation.
We absolutely are going to see the reflection of this, but itâs gonna take decades and itâll be too late. So, for the love of your brain, pretend that itâs a muscle and make it work. People complain about âwhen am I ever gonna use this maths formula in my life?â Youâre not. Youâre teaching your brain to think logically. Those sinapses will be there for when you need to figure out your weekâs schedule. English classes taught me how to interpret data and how to convey it in this text so itâs clear and you understand what Iâm saying, not because I needed to justify why the curtain is blue.
Make your brain know how to do different things. Logic games, puzzles, taking care of a garden even if small, planning a churchâs event or birthday, learn a new instrument, learn a few words in another language, look at a calendar every day, do some manual labor if possible. Do not, I repeat, do not let your brain get rid of sinapses by letting AI do everything. Your brain uses 20% of your bodyâs energy â do you really think itâs going to maintain connexions that arenât in use?
Most cases of Alzheimerâs are sporadic, meaning no family history. Family history of a first-degree relative with Alzheimerâs starting before they were 80yo increases your risk in 2-3x on average.
TLDR: Yes. From the knowledge we have today, AI will increase the number and severity of dementia cases.

Do you remember when I joked that a new sin was about to drop regarding AI being used to write homilies.
Our boy Leo has only gone and written an Encyclical Letter.
âHumanity, created by God in all its grandeur, is today facing a pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together.â
Itâs mind blowing to me that the pope also shares my thoughts about being human in a digital age that increasingly detaches us from our humanity and is dumbing us down:
âWithout careful attention, an educational system lacking in a love for truth may emerge, in which an incessant flow of information replaces the essential exercise of research, reflection and discernment. As knowledge becomes increasingly fragmented, it becomes difficult to grasp reality as a whole, to ask profound questions about meaning, or to develop authentic, critical and creative thought.â
ENCYCLICAL LETTER MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE LEO XIV ON SAFEGUARDING THE HUMAN PERSON IN THE TIME OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE [
