If you don't see me in the lab at Los Guachimontones the next few days it is because I am going to New Orleans to present a paper at the annual Society for American Archaeology conference. But instead of presenting a paper on West Mexico, my paper is on archaeology and video game preservation. Specifically, how archaeology can help save historic video games from being lost forever. I'll be back on Friday!

As someone who's vaguely involved with game preservation, look into the state of early computer game preservation if you want to be horrified. If it wasn't for the hundred of shitty shareware CDs, a large section of DOS/Win31 history would just be gone. These games were distributed via BBS and early internet, so there's no physical artifacts, many were made by Some Guy in his garage and sold nearly nothing, so they never got wide distribution, and nobody was backing any of this stuff up. How many are we missing? Nobody knows. The ones that made it onto CDs got saved, but any that didn't are just gone. We're also missing a bunch of Flash games, despite the efforts of Flashpoint, for similar reasons.

my goals in life? a little stone cottage in the countryside nestled within pleasant woodland with a quiet room to write and air that always smells like fresh bread baking, and there's an overgrown garden i can see from the kitchen window, and we never slam doors
