One hundred years after Virginia Woolf explored the limitations of language in On Being Ill, the Piranesi author reflects on the power of st
The underlying idea is that in some people – and I stress some people – chronic illness might look like this: a very ancient and primitive part of the brain and nervous system believes it has detected danger, possibly a tiger or something like that, and so it produces pain or a whole range of symptoms in an effort to get the sufferer to close down and protect herself. The nervous system does this very effectively and it can carry on doing it for decades. It is really very inventive. I feel that mine ought to be eligible for some sort of prize.
Padre Pio was forbidden from saying public Mass and hearing confessions. I seem to remember Catherine of Siena was told she couldn’t receive the Eucharist daily because her ecstasies were distracting. and these prohibitions were unjust—and in the case of Padre Pio, prevented him from ministering to people whom he might have helped—but they obeyed!! because they believed humble submission to the will of God in and through the authority of His Church was more important than fighting to be seen as right. they were vindicated by history, and if they weren't, they still would have been vindicated at the Last Judgment. but it was still right that they be obedient.
something something "the average country has 10000 prime ministers per election cycle" is a misconception. united kingdoms georg, which has had 10000 prime ministers since 2019, is an outlier and should have never been counted

“Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.” - Psalm 37:8-9
Last night in Belfast, a man was seriously wounded in a very violent stabbing attack. The motive and circumstances surrounding the crime are currently unknown. The attack was filmed and the video has been widely shared online. I would strongly advise against watching it, it is highly disturbing and extremely graphic. Some of the only information currently available is that the attacker was from Sudan, and that he was fought off by an onlooker with a hurl.
I tell you this to ask that, if you are able, to please pray for peace and order in Belfast tonight. There are widespread plans for protests, which could easily devolve into riots and disorder due to the increasingly aggressive anti-migrant sentiment in the UK and Ireland. People are right to be angry about a crime like this, but may take that anger out on the wrong people in the wrong way.
Please pray also for the injured man and for his family, and for justice to be served. Pray for the doctors, police officers, and all other public servants involved. Pray for the local community, for the county, and for the nation. Pray for the attacker’s repentance.
St. Patrick, patron saint of the island of Ireland, pray for us. St. Malachy, patron saint of Belfast, pray for us. Blessed Virgin Mary, undoer of knots, refuge of sinners, pray for us.
If you have the time and energy, please pray for my grandfather Michael. He collapsed at Mass today and is currently in hospital. He is the main carer for my grandmother, and she would be lost without him. Lord, have mercy.
'But,' you will say, 'I cannot endure insult from my enemies.' Why is that, pray? For, if what is said be true, you ought to show compunction even in his presence, and to be grateful to him for the charges. If, on the contrary, it be false, treat it with scorn. Does he call you poverty-stricken? Laugh at him. Does he say you are low-born or foolish? Groan for his future lot. For 'Whoever says to his brother, "Thou fool!" shall be liable to the fire of Gehenna' (Matt. 5.22) Therefore, when he insults you, think of the punishment which he has in store for him, and not only will you not feel angry, but you will even shed tears for him. Indeed, one does not become angry with a fever patient or someone suffering from inflammation, but one pities and grieves for all such unfortunates. The soul inflamed with anger is in truth like them.
