The entire range of human skin tones varies from so pale white that it's almost kind of blue, to so deep black that it's almost kind of blue, and I think that's beautiful. Do you love the colour of the guy.

The way Remmick dunking Sammie in the climax of the film worked as a forced baptism? A precursor to a āconversionā to vampirism? The one-sided conversation Remmick has about the imposition of Christianity, his own forcible conversion that he now inflicts on another young man, all while speaking as though he, Remmick, is better and more enlightened than his own oppressors? The violence of the scene, the terror and distress we see on Sammieās face as he is waterboarded by Remmick. That it is all a metaphor for the actual violence of forced conversion, the mental, emotional, social and even physical helplessness and disorientation that is felt in the victim made tangible through Catonās performance. All of it inflicted with an intention to control and subjugate.
Holy. Goddamn. Shit.
Not just that but when you think about the way the Black church has often reclaimed baptism by connecting it to various beliefs about water as a spiritual power/cleanser in African cultures. it's just like...so much more horrifying. Remmick not only becomes like the people he hates but violently uses what later will become so precious to the Black church - ie an aspect of African cultures - against Sammie while acting enlightened.

Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually donāt think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you canāt point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.
Ask that someone sent a blog I follow that inspired this. You are twisting yourself into some incredibly bizarre pretzels so you can go āaha, a character I Relate Toā and itās just like. Well actually there just may not be parts of this film you can see yourself in. And thatās okay. You can enjoy this movie for many of its merits that arenāt āI am in itā.
One of the main points of fiction is the opportunity to experience viewpoints and forms of existence that are different from our own. You can find a character or story interesting without it being like you somehow.
