Grab your popcorn, dear readers, for the spectacle never truly leaves the stage.
The fandom is particularly restless these days. Starz has sounded the first trumpet and officially begun the Outlander promo cycle, calling back those who, truth be told, never really left. And, like the sun stubbornly rising every morning, the inevitable unfolds once again: there they are - Sam and Caitríona’s intimacy, their undeniable connection, the silent language of glances, gestures, and bodies that speak long before words ever do.
And so arise, inevitably, the million-dollar questions: “Are they a couple?” “Are they together?”
The work, however, has been carried out with almost artisanal patience. The well-known “widow” narrative is no accident. It serves a very specific purpose: ensuring comfort during interviews, ease in professional settings, and freedom behind the scenes, all while maintaining the conveniently protective shield of: “I’m in a serious relationship.”
This applies not only to interviews recorded long ago, but also to those yet to come. The safeguard remains firmly in place - rehearsed, curated, and carefully sustained. An elegant shelter, one might say: discreet, functional, and exceedingly convenient.
And yet, even with Caitríona’s “marriage” serving its purpose, the narrative is never complete without its counterpart. On Sam’s side, there is always a storyline in motion - subtle, curated, and strategically vague. A necessary balance, perhaps, ensuring that no single version of the truth ever stands alone for too long.
As if we hadn’t already lived through this very same script during previous Outlander premieres. It’s a cycle. It always has been.
And of course, we arrive at the most predictable chapter of all: that Tumblr which, quite miraculously, “receives” privileged information. Only her. Exclusive access. Shocking absolutely no one.
And as if that weren’t enough, we’re treated to the latest so-called “photos” pulled from the widow’s stories. Authentic or not, they are frankly laughable, especially when one notices how conveniently they mirror old wedding photos and poses from her marriage to her late husband. Copy, paste, repeat. The narrative isn’t evolving; it’s deteriorating.
One might also reasonably wonder whether a certain level of digital recycling was involved. After all, images today are as malleable as the narratives built around them.
(I won’t be sharing the photo here, but it’s already circulating on Tumblr).
The situation borders on comical. While the widow “tries” to do her job - the one she was, might I add, very deliberately assigned - SH remains loyal to his favorite specialty: silence.
December 26th marked the birthday of his business partner, Alex. And curiously enough, no post. Collective surprise? Hardly. I, for one, am not surprised. It’s entirely possible SH isn’t even using social media at the moment. While the narrative makes just enough noise to keep people distracted, he’s likely somewhere else entirely, with his real family, far from the circus.
Whoever is posting appears to be someone from the social media team. Perhaps the birthday memo never made it to the desk. These things happen.
It’s the old game of look here, not there. We know it well. We’ve seen it before.
For now, I’ll leave you with this. Draw your own conclusions, and, borrowing the wise words of our beloved interviewer Kristen Dos Santos:
