I think "slop" is a strong contender for world of the year 2025, as it seems to be universally recognizable as a description for the majority of output produced in the name of Return on Investment.
Sure it means algorithmically generative slop now, but look at housing construction, durable appliances, food, automobiles, you name it and tell me it's not just more slop. If enshittification is the process, slop is the result.

before it gets bad I'm just gonna tell y'all certain rich people have literally only recently noticed Open Source software availability compromises the bottom line of their proprietary investments so if you see little chickadees on this website talking about the dangers of Open Source software all of a sudden it's cuz they accidentally sipped some koolaid mixed up by the far right yacht people to fuck with peoples software sovereignty and right to repair, modify, and redistribute robust codebases that become a problem when 30% of your portfolio is in, oh, say, adobe or openai.
This is your unfriendly neighborhood computer fucker telling you not to fall for it and to demand your right to digital sovereignty rather than trusting companies to make correct choices about what to do with the parts of your life they would very much like to have in the cloud to continue improving their products.

Thomas was alone, but perhaps more importantly he was not obviously exceptional. In a world defined by jumping, he was not the worst or the best. He could not float in water, he could not springboard the others to greater heights. Why is Thomas the instrumental one, the one without whom the whole endeavor would fail?
John was the strongest and most focused on success. His performative altruism makes him an early focus, as does the ease with which he can scout a level. The player becomes immediately familiar with his value and his story. Couldn’t he have lead the team?
Claire is the most cooperative, the most dedicated to helping others. She defines herself as a superhero and embraces that credo of responsibility that comes with it. Her whole purpose seems to be to usher the others along the path. Couldn’t she have rallied them towards some greater purpose?
Laura, for all her pained suspicion, literally elevates those around her. She thrives in the team setting, and makes for an obvious element around which a team could crystallize. Couldn’t she have been impetus enough for the others to cooperate?
Sarah has seen more of the world than any of them. Couldn’t her experience have guided them?
Chris...well, we can skip Chris.
In every case, though, there is something missing. These characters are beautiful and relatable, and we are invested in their success together, but when alone they remained alone. Thomas is not defined by his ability but by his curiosity, and that leads him to explore the edges of the world, to find its shape and then to imagine it differently. Although the others have the seeds of leadership, Thomas gives the team purpose, and Thomas is the one who best understands how to bring people together. He celebrates those around him for their strengths and uniqueness, and in so doing he teaches them to work together, to care for one another. Their achievements are his achievements. He is the one that turns defeat into pyrrhic victory, his empathy extending to all those who would come after. Their freedom is his freedom. Their future is his future.
Thomas Was Alone tells us that cooperation allows us to transcend our limitations. It is a message of hope, and a reminder of how we have come to be what we are. When all else is lost, build a bridge.
And boobs. Constant boobs. No one in the production staff looked at these pajamas and said “you know what? she’d just sleep naked. who wears body glue to bed?”

I’ve had people respond to some of my meta about Pearl with citations of certain episodes and lines like, “Yeah but Pearl said this in [scene where she was really off and breaking down] so that must be what she thinks” and I’ve always felt like there was something Incorrect in using those scenes as “evidence” of her actual opinions but I could never put into words what it was so I never responded and?? I think I’ve figured it out now?
I’ve noticed for a while that, with certain exceptions, there is a general and -jarring- difference in the way neurodivergent + mentally ill fans tend to interpret Pearl and the way neurotypical fans interpret her. I think that probably most NT people see moments of extreme emotion (so in Pearl’s case, “Rose’s Scabbard,” “Sworn to the Sword,” “Friend Ship”) as the times when a person is most honest–when the walls come down and the truth comes out. And ND people can experience them that way too sometimes, but more often, like, autistic people, mentally ill people, post-traumatic people, tend (basing this on myself and people close to me and people I follow on tumblr, so, don’t claim to speak for everyone, but) to see times of uncontrolled emotional turmoil and breakdown as times when they are Not Themselves, when the things they say come from desperation and confusion rather than their rational thoughts. For autistic people, stressful situations and the emotional responses that accompany them can be overwhelming and inhibit logic, causing thoughts that were once habitual but now disproven to come to the surface, or nagging insecurities to be voiced as if they are The Factual Truth. A major component of most if not all mental illnesses is the constant persuasive repetition, from parts of our minds that we have no control over, of things which we KNOW are not true. And when we’re stressed and vulnerable, it’s harder to listen to logic, the conscious self, the part of you that knows better, the part you that’s “you.”
“I need someone to tell me what to do.” “On the battlefield, Steven is what matters–you don’t matter.” Letting Steven fall off the platform. Trying to stay with the spaceship when it was about to blow up. All of these are things that Pearl said and did when she was in extreme states of stress, grief, and mental instability. All of them are specifically refuted and condemned, by Pearl herself, as soon as she’s back to baseline.
“What you’re saying may be true, but it doesn’t matter.”
“Rose made me feel like I was everything…I see now how much you two really care about each other.”
“Oh, what would she think of me now…”
“I could have killed us…I’m so sorry, Steven.”
^^^^THESE are statements Pearl makes when she is “herself,” rational and in full control of her perceptions. These are the statements we should be judging her character by. Neurodivergent and mentally ill people are more than the lies we constantly have to fight against. A breakdown says nothing about you, who you are, or what you believe, other than that you are mentally ill or under overwhelming stress. The action taken AFTER a breakdown, the willingness to own up and fix, the strength to understand that your illness isn’t you, says everything. I love how SU captures that. It’s something we should be paying attention to.
Cities have a way of bringing out the exceptionalism in people. On a personal scale, it is a drive to differentiate oneself from the mass of humanity gathered in one place. On a metropolitan scale, it is an urban nationalism, a will to assert your tribe as greater than the rest. This exceptionalism fuels the conflict and loss at the heart of Transistor.
For the crime of being an outsider, the mystery man is locked away in the Transistor, deprived of his agency in the events to come. For the crime of loving an outsider, Red is stripped of her voice, forced into silence while her city dissolves around her. It isn’t the mechanism of the city, either, that strikes against them, but the soul. The people in power are driven by their own twisted sense of duty to the collective, not by any mandate granted by the traditional organizing forces of a city: government, wealth, political strength. They collect exceptional people, people already working for the betterment of the city, and dissolve them into some murky ruling class. It is not enough that the work benefits the commons, the glory must be conserved.
The Process, in all its robotic iconography and mute efficiency, exists as the culmination of a plan, and an illustration of the dangers of forcing people into the service of a singular end. The Camerata tried to grant themselves the power to reshape the city in their own image, and the power proved to be uncontrollable, un-consolidatable, transforming their attempted oligarchy into an apocalypse by way of anarchy. To fight the Process, Red must also plan on a tactical level, mapping actions and executing them once they fit her goals. Contrast this to her high level decision making, which disregards the advice of all those around her as a matter of course, flying recklessly into the teeth of the disaster gripping the city. Her motivation, as evidenced by her final act, would appear to be love and the desire to exhaust all possibilities to reclaim it. Her mission is passion and chaos, her tools are calculation and patient prototyping. The city is its people, and the city is a machine all its own.
As Red fights, she becomes a stranger in the city she would save. Her mission prevents her from being corrupted and subsumed by the Process with her community, and this sets her apart. She struggles to interact with the messages left behind by those in the crossfire, typing one message, leaving another, or walking away from the attempt altogether without successfully communicating anything. Her refuge is remoteness embodied, a beach with nothing but doors. Her success is a reconstruction, putting all that was torn down back into its rightful place, but there’s no joy in the creation. It’s a somber process, and Red never indicates that these things that she’s rebuilding were the goal, that they were important to her at all. The city’s ambition was mapped by her enemies, and it took her love away. She’s an agent apart, able to comment on that self-destructive impulse to exceptionalism by turning the clock back to the start but not able to participate in righting it. Instead, she makes one last gesture to cut herself off permanently from the city and its problems. It is clear from her trials that Red is strong, but in this case she either cannot or chooses to not exercise her power.
To go back would be to cast oneself into the engine to keep the cycle of metropolitan ambition running. Red has come this far, but not for that purpose.
I see you hurting I do what I can
But I won't save you
I won't save you
--In Circles, Transistor OST
In the end, no one is saved. Not the Red that was, not the man in the Transistor, and certainly not the city. The story of Transistor is a tragedy wrought from the actions of the few who would enslave the many with progress and policy. The consequences of that ambition are meant to be felt.

Bioshock. Mad Max. The Matrix, although not as fully. Dark Souls.
Where does this archetype come from? The one with the decayed future so corrupt that as the hero fights to correct it, it all falls apart around him? Where at the end of the fight, there’s nothing left standing of the old, just some new beginning with only a handful of survivors.
I could trace it back to Ragnarok, that old Norse winnowing that leaves only two survivors. Farther back I don’t have the history to know. Cycles and rebirth, gravitational collapse and big bang, the whole thing echoing itself in waveforms through millenia according to myth.
That cycle myth doesn’t have the same responsibility to it, the sense of succeeding so fully that you come out the other side into apocalyptic failure. The escape and rebirth here just a postscript; the crux of the story is that choice to leave the whole mechanism to crumble instead of propping it up, repairing the damage of time and one’s own rebellion. In Snowpiercer specifically, it is reaching out to a child and pulling him out through the gears to safety, dooming the engine in the process. You are literally saving the future at the cost of the past.
Our culture impels us to kill our fathers and build our own house from their bones. Frame it in fear, as an escape, and you get these stories. Frame it as a creative impulse, as an act of birthing one’s own vision, and you get American Gods, The Magicians Trilogy, Iron Council. Think of the city of New Crobuzon, tenements spackled onto the skyscraper ribs of some primordial monster; of the giant Ymir whose flesh was the clay that the gods used to fashion the earth; of Osiris, whose death inspires the creation of a son and heir. It’s all just a matter of where the story begins, before or after death.
I think these stories are not about burning The world, they are about burning Your world. The reason we can celebrate the loss of all that came before is because it is allegorical, a shrugging off of the past in order to achieve new things. That transition works for an individual in a way that would be and is textually horrific on a larger scale. Heroism is usually sacrificing a few in order to save the many. Sacrificing the many, all of them, in order to save just a few is only heroic if they’re not really people but symbols of something anti-progressive.
In fact, the idea of sacrifice, the appeal to heroism, is often the last piece of the puzzle when the story comes together. To be a hero is to be celebrated by society, and if society is the enemy then one cannot be a hero and also succeed. To cast oneself on the pyre and keep the fire going is romantic, but romance is not revolutionary, and it is not progressive. Progress is cold and foreign, it is uncharted, and to embrace it is to leave behind the familiarity and support of the system that raised you. Maybe even to leave behind a part of yourself, trapped in the gears that churn beneath the world.
Listen I am so here for platonic “I love you"s. I don’t care if you think “I love you” is some sacred phrase to only utter to one person in your life, i don’t care if you think it makes me look overbearing. I say “I love you” to my friends every time I say goodbye because I want them to know 100% without a doubt that I care for them and love them and am there for them so so much.
I’m really coming around to this idea that love isn’t just for one person. Monogamous romantic commitment is certainly a very potent form of love, but the joy in life -- my joy in life -- comes from building a family of choice, and at the core of family is love. I want to be better at letting those people know that I love them.
