Part I
Chapter 1: The Phantom
Heâd haunted your dreams for the third time this week. Itâd happened so often, that you were beginning to have trouble distinguishing between wake and sleep. The heavy feeling as you slide into sleep began to permeate your day-to-day life. Everything had a softened edge. You moved through the day in a haze but one that left you feeling at ease, not one that made you feel lost and exhausted. In fact, youâd never felt more at rest.
âHello? Hello?â Your friend waved their hand in front of your dazed face. âAnyone in there?â
You blinked back to Earth and your balance wobbled as you held the barre. âSorry,â you muttered. âI got lost in thought.â
They had a doubtful look on their face. âYouâve been doing that a lot. Is it all this stuff with the Phantom?â
âOh, um...yeah.â They werenât wrong, technically speaking. You had the Phantom on your mind, but not in the same way that everyone else did. Your visions of him felt so real. His presence felt like the first rain after a long summer. You always woke with the faint scent of petrichor and old library books lingering around you. The burn of his touch never failed to make you open your eyes in a cold sweat. âI guess Iâve been thinking about it a lot.â
âMe, too. Itâs so scary,â they sighed. âI hope they catch him soon. I can barely focus on rehearsal with this crazy shit happening!â
You nodded. Youâd spent the last few months preparing for the Ministryâs production of Hannibal as part of the ensemble. That was more than fine with you. You didnât particularly care about the attention that came with having a big part in a show. At the end of the day, you just wanted to perform. So it wasnât a big deal when you were turned down for the lead. It wasnât to you, at least.
âOh, Lucifer. Here she comes.â Your friend passed off the pained look on their face as a result of their stretching and not the woman whoâd just waltzed in. She was the troupeâs not-so-secret favorite, taking every lead role in every show even if that required rewriting music to fit her vocal range. âMaybe her voice box will finally burst,â they muttered to you.
âI donât think thatâs how it works,â you replied nonchalantly as you wrapped up your last stretch. With the prima donna being the last to arrive with her entourage, the troupe migrated from the rehearsal studio to the main stage. The showâs director was already seated with Sister Imperator and Frater Imperator alongside him. When you stepped out onstage, Copia sat up and gave you a small wave that went unnoticed by the heated conversation happening beside him. You smiled in return. With everyone present, the trio moved from their seats onto the stage.
âSettle down everyone, weâre already running behind,â the director huffed with a glare at his watch.
The group began their full rehearsal. The first show was in four days and everyone could feel it coming. Any slight delay on a turn or flat pitch was enough for your director to demand repeating the entire scene. This time around, everyone seemed to hit their stride a few scenes in. The star of the show made her way forward to begin her performance of Think of Me. Her commitment to being as pitchy as possible was impressive. She was a good singer but often fell straight over the line between showmanship and overkill. Your peers, as well as the Imperators, held back winces when she hit the higher notes. You, however, had just about mastered the art of the poker face.
A backdrop for a later scene, held high and tight above the sister performing, came crashing down with a bang that shook the stage. If it hadnât been so loud, it would have landed right on top of her head. The director, Sister, Frater, as well as the starâs entourage, descended on her to be sure she was okay.
âThatâs it! I am done!â She shouted. âUntil this Phantom fuckery is handled, I am out!â The sister stormed off the stage and out of the theater. No one could do anything but watch.
The director and Copia spoke in hushed tones. While the troupe had side conversations of their own, Sister Imperator stepped forward, commanding the roomâs attention when she spoke. âYou. Sing it,â she pointed at you to come stand in front of her, the director, and her son.
You took shaky steps out of line with your eyes avoiding the trio in front of you.
âWell? Sing the aria,â the director.
âGo on,â Sister encouraged.
You took a breath and lifted your chin. Picking a spot just behind the men to focus on, your voice came out soft. âThink of me, think of me fondly when weâve said goodbye.â
âLouder,â Sister hissed under her breath.
You took her direction and your voice began to ring throughout the theater. All eyes were on you as you took almost everyone by surprise. Copia, Imperator, and your friend had known about your gift for years. With each bar of the aria, and a lack of outrage from the room, your posture straightened and your smile grew. Once youâd proven you could handle the push on your range to perform the song, applause broke out. You gave a stiff nod and bow, scurrying back to your place in line. Copia smiled at you; his eyes dragged down your form from head to toe. You felt your heart race.
âVery nice. Be in vocal rehearsals from now on,â the director instructed without a clear emotion. âLetâs go, people! Back to your places!â
Everyone scrambled to their marks to continue rehearsal. Throughout, you caught Copiaâs eye every now and again. He and Sister Imperator gestured and whispered to each other every few moments. They seemed pleased with how things were going. You were excited to take over the lead role but grappling with the self-doubt and anxiety that came with it. In less than a week, you were going from quiet ensemble dancer to the face of the show. Only time would tell if youâd meet expectations.
---
You swallowed hard beneath the forced, beaming smile as you walked to the front and center of the stage with the lilting piano. All of a sudden, the lights were too bright, too hot. Your clothes too heavy and itchy. Could everyone see how much you were sweating? Did anyone else know that it took every last bit of strength to not turn around and run offstage?
You blinked and it was over. You barely remembered singing the aria before the roaring applause filled your ears. You couldnât believe your eyes: not a single person was seated. A grin overtook your face and you gave a bow. The intermission began as you made a beeline backstage right into Copiaâs arms. He picked you up and spun you around. âYou were amazing, baby! You really gave âem a good ass kicking! I am so proud of you.â Copia put you down and left kisses all over your face.
You surged in to meet your lips with his half-painted ones. He hummed and smiled into the kiss, pulling you close until there was no breathing room between you. You broke away and tugged his hands toward you. Ensuring that no one was looking, you led him around a dark corner and pushed into a long-forgotten storage closet. In the dark space, your hands ran up and down Copiaâs torso. You reveled in the way his soft stomach and hips felt under your fingertips. He whimpered when you squeezed his love handles and slotted your lips together. He slipped his tongue into your mouth while he began to grope you in return. Copia groaned when you grabbed handfuls of his ass. He bit your lip and pulled you impossibly closer. Your hands traveled to the front of his pants. Without hesitation, you pressed one hand against the growing bulge there.
âAh, baby,â he gasped. âI-â
âShut up. Please.â You pulled him by his lapels into another deep kiss. He spread his legs to accommodate you placing one of your own between them. Copia started to roll his hips against you, eliciting a moan from you at the feeling of his hard cock rubbing on your body.
He pulled back and cupped your cheeks. âPerhaps here isnât the best place for...you know?â
Your heart sank while your stomach twisted. Hot blood rushed to your face. âCopia, if you donât want to do this with me, we never have to,â you muttered. You pushed yourself off him and backed up against the wall. There wasnât much space you could build between you, but any centimeter of distance felt better.
âItâs not that I donât want to. Itâs justâI want it to be the right time.â
âAt this point it seems like there will never be a right time for me.â You kept your eyes away from his.
Copiaâs face dropped. âTesoro-â
âI should go. Need to touch up my face before intermission is over. Iâll see you later.â You flung the closet door open and fled.
The rest of the nightâs performance went smoothly. For once, Copiaâs rejection didnât stop you from moving on. You refocused on your performance and shoved the storage closet encounter far back in your mind. At this point, you were more upset at how much it bothered you than you were at him turning you down. If he didnât want you, youâd rather he just say it than continuing to make you think you had a chance with him. Whatever.
You sighed and bumped your head back against the door of your room. One hand found the light switch. You blinked under the change in brightness. As you started to change into your lounge clothes, two bouquets of flowers on your vanity caught your attention: identical dozens of deep red roses. You approached the vanity and the sweet scent overcame you. A small card peeked out of each bouquet. The one on your left read âMy shining star, you always blow me away. Congratulations on your debut!â in tight cursive writing. It was signed âWith Love, C.â A faint smile made its way onto your lips. Still, a pang of hurt stabbed you. Placing the card back into the flowers, you plucked the card out of the twin bouquet on your right. There was no message, just a simple yet elegantly signed âP.â
You dropped the note. Your blood ran cold, palms clammy, and your last meal began to make its way up your throat. A figure moved out of the corner of your eye. Your head snapped up to look into your reflection in the vanity mirror. The lights flickered and you swore you saw it again. With shaking hands, you looked over your shoulder.
Nothing.
You shook your head and chalked it up to exhaustion from the long week and even longer night you were currently having. When you looked into your reflection again, he was staring right back at you.
You screamed and slapped your hands over your mouth. No one could know what was happening. No one could know what you were seeing.
âIs everything alright in there?â A meek Copia tapped against your door. When you didnât respond, he tried again. âHello?! Hello?! Let me in!â His voice boomed and his fist pounded against the wood. The doorknob rattled. None of this racket registered to you.
A mismatched pair of green and white eyes framed by a metallic silver half-mask bored into yours. Dark ringlets framed his painted face. By now, youâd memorized every detail of the crisp black and white lines that gave him his unique visage. You could have, but didnât turn around to see if he was lingering behind you. If you looked and he wasnât there, it was only confirmation that these visits were nothing more than twisted dreams conjured by your desperate mind. No. Let the fantasy go on one more night.
âIâm going to get help!â Copia shouted and his footsteps retreated from your door.
The man in the mirror put a gloved finger to his lips. There was no need; you knew better than to make another sound without his instruction. He gestured with his free hand to the full body mirror mounted on another wall. You took wobbly steps toward it. The lights flickered again and in a blink, the man appeared beside your reflection in the mirror. One of his hands reached to you and met you in the real world. The warmth of his palm melded with yours in a firm grip. You felt no fear or danger in his hold. It was just another invitation to a world beyond your own.

I'm feeling some kind of way and I honestly just want Cardi to pull me into his lap and gently bounce me on his dick in a tantric sort of mindset. Just hours of gentle bouncing and him whispering sweet things to me. Maybe we come, maybe we don't, but just being there would be beautiful.

14. white lie
from the vague fanfic trope list pls :)
Thank you so much for your idea! I had so much fun with this one and WOW it really ran away from me, haha. Full disclosure, its more of a white lie by omission and sneakiness, and the whole idea kind of grew legs and walked away by the end of it. I hope you still enjoy!
Vague prompt list can be found here!
Papa Emeritus IV x GN! Reader AND Creature!Perpetua & Reader. ;) No twinwich here, you're just really good friends.
Disclosure: 6k words. Mild smut but mostly fluffy shenanigans. My goofy headcanon names for C and V, and some very very self indulgent Sicilian. Thank you to @calllmelittleghuleh for letting me steal her identity and providing all the translations!
White Lie
The idea had come to you in more ways than one.
Your legs wrapped tighter around his hips as he moved against you. Each thrust was punctuated with the clap of sweat-soaked skin on skin. Your sounds climbed in pitch as Copia rubbed your hot core with precision timing. Your climax was fast approaching, risking ending your encounter as quickly as it began. At some point during your midday tryst Copaâs hair had flopped loose from its tight pomade hold, tickling your temple with each trust. His lips brushed the shell of your ear. A shiver ripped through you.Â
His voice was dark as he whispered to you. âCiatu miu, nun c'hai idea da prisa ca hai su u mo cori, vĂŹeru? VĂŹeru? Minchia, si avvolta accussĂŹ stritta ntunnu a mia. Si putissi, ti facissi rimbalzare supra u mo cazzu jornu e notti. A mo duci e nica puttana. Signuri mio. T'amu cchiĂš ri quantu tu possa mai immaginare. T'amu. T'amu accussĂŹ tantu.â
*Ciatu miu, you have no idea the hold you have on my heart, do you? Do you? Fuck, youâre wrapped so tightly around me. If I could, Iâd have you bouncing on my cock day and night. My sweet little whore. My God. I love you more than youâll ever know. I love you. I love you so much.
You couldnât understand a word he was saying but that only fanned the flames of your arousal. The fry of his voice was like sandpaper, making the hairs on your neck stand on edge as his hips snapped harder and harder. You couldnât hold on and he knew it.
âVeni pi mia.âÂ
*Come for me.Â
The command was plain. Within seconds, you were spasming around Copiaâs cock. Your walls fluttering around him sent him over his own peak. His own moans were louder than yours, a chorus of lust and worship of sin. Copia stilled as warmth flooded your core.Â
The rosy-tinted afterglow kept you feeling warm and gooey. You flopped into his side. A comfortable silence accompanied the comedown.
Finally, you spoke. âWhat does it mean?âÂ
Your fingers idly brushed through the whorls of hair covering his pecs.
Cardiâs hand covered yours and he smacked a kiss to your forehead. âWhat does what mean, baby?âÂ
ââTâamu acusi tagnu, angilo mio.ââ Your lips shaped the unfamiliar words hesitantly. You nestled in closer against him. âYou were saying it when you came. I never get to hear you speak Italian.â
There was a long beat of silence. You glanced up at him. Was he... blushing?Â
âAndrea?â
âThat one... 'I love you so much, my angel.' You were close, but the pronunciation was off,â he said. Copia met your eyes for a fraction of a second before darting away again. âItâs not Italian, actually.â
âNo?â
âNo, no. Sicilian,â Copia sounded far away. âI grew up in Cataniaâeast coast of Sicilyâuntil I was a teenager. Italian is common but I always spoke the dialect around le nonne who babysat me. They practically raised me. Heh, I knew a little English from all the records I listened to, though. Then, you know, the Psaltarians married and they moved us to Los Angeles, here. That was that. But I never lost the dialect.â
His face remained expressionless but his eyes gave him away. Melancholy. You knew your Papa. Heâd always been a bit of an odd one out, a bit sensitive. It was part of what drew you to him in the first place. You could only imagine how much a sensitive kid like him would have struggled moving to a strange ministry, in a strange country, speaking a strange language.
You pressed a kiss to his collarbone; Copia turned on his side so you were forehead to forehead. Your voice hushed. âDo you miss Italy?â
He made a noncommittal sound. Instinctively, you echoed him. He cracked a smile. It didnât reach his eyes. âI visit sometimes. During the last tour, we had an extra day before we had to leave for Nice. Rented a Maserati with the ministryâs black card. Drove down to Etna. Hopped a ferry. Ate so many cannoli di pistacchio that I got a stomach ache all night. Good times!â
âAndrea,â you furrowed your brow. âCannoli? Youâre lactose intolerant.â
âAnd? Itâs pistacchio, ciccina. You know how I feel about pistachio.â The dramatic sweep in his voice made you giggle. His eyes softened.
Despite his jokes, there remained something small and sad in his gaze. Your mind was working a mile a minute.
âWhat if we take a vacation to Sicily this summer? For your birthday? We can make all the stops you want,â you said. You rubbed his back. Long lines puckered his skin from how you scratched at him just minutes earlier.Â
Even before you finished, Copia was murmuring his noâs. Your heart sank.
âIt wonât work.â His voice was heavy. âI am Papa now. Between the upcoming summer solstice ritual, practicing for next monthâs music festival, and taming our new ghouls, I just wonât have time.â
Your eyes pleaded. You kissed his jaw, trying to tempt him into indulgence. âAnd as Papa, youâre responsible for being a figure of sin. Come on, a little Sloth will inspire the congregation. And you deserve a break, anyway.â
âSomeday, ciccina,â Copia pulled you tighter so your head buried into his neck. You knew he didnât want you to see his eyes.Â
Staring into the wall, all he could see were the memories of his childhood. A lonely little boy playing in the foothills of Mt. Etna, ignorant of the darkening sky. The smoothed stones of the pebble beaches pressing uncomfortably into his sandals as he wandered the shoreline dragging a big stick. The blinding lights and boisterous sounds of carnival driving him away towards refuge, into still alleyways filled with vermin. A lonely little boy, indeed.Â
âSomeday.â
Copia was good at putting up a front but his sadness always bled through into his words. He missed his homeland. In the weeks following that conversation, the topic never left your mind for long, even when you were on duty.
The ominous, twisting forest behind the Ministry is supposedly haunted. Even under a full moon, a regular sibling could never see through the wall of fog that perpetually lay over the grounds. Strange howls of unknowable origin wailed in the night. Even for a satanic ministry, the siblings found themselves unsettled by its uncomfortable aura. So naturally, it was a favorite place of clergy, ghouls, and siblings alike to fuck.Â
Tonight, no brave neâerdowells were to be found defiling innocent firs or conveniently flat boulders. You plunged through the fog, only carrying your pack and a cooler. Though you never felt fully safe in the forest, you didnât bother with a lantern tonight. Your far-away mind pulled your feet down the dirt pathway with familiar ease. Dirt crunched underneath your boots. Branches snapped further within the pea soup fog.
How were you supposed to help Copia when he refused to be helped? If a vacation was out, maybe a staycation would help him feel more at home? A visit to the sandy LA beaches might not be a bad idea... How different could Italian and Californian beaches be anyway?
A growl ripped through your daydreams. The hairs on your neck prickled. Before you yawned the gaping mouth of a pitch black cave. You were here. And so was He.
There was only a momentâs notice before a heavy but lithe figure tackled you to the ground. You grunted with shock. The attacker's weight pressed you deeper into the earth as it began to... lick your face?
âPet, get off me,â you pushed back his shoulders as Pet slobbered your cheek with his undulating tongue. He barely budged; chittering whines revealed his delight at your presence. âPet.â
One good shove made him lean back on his haunches. The dirt-covered face of your ward stared back at you with a gleaming grin of too many teeth.Â
All you knew him by was Pet. That was what the clergy called him. It suited his bestial nature, you had to admit. They never gave you many details as to why a semi-human, semi-creature resided in the backwoods behind the ministry, preying on lost hitchhikers and small mammals to survive. They never gave you details as to why he needed caretaking. All you knew was: besides your other responsibilities, keep Pet safe. So every night past sundown, you trekked through the innards of the creepy forest, towards your Pet. Feed him (usually the frozen meat of small mammals) if he was hungry, provide water (he preferred blood but sparkling mountain stream water was an acceptable substitute), and keep him generally presentable for when heâs... needed. Whatever that means.Â
When Sister Imperator assigned you to your new role, she gave you one other instructionâone you didnât quite like. Under no circumstances ever tell your Papa about Pet. After so many months, Copia had stopped questioning your regular disappearances after sundown.
Before you, Pet trilled. âFood?â
âDude. Youâre hungry?â you asked skeptically. His clothes were covered in the rusty stains and dried residue of last nightâs dinner. At least a deer. Or worse. It should have been enough to keep him full for a few days.
âAlways hungry, always hungry.â He crawled to the cooler youâd dragged with you, knowing his favorite furry snack hid inside. Deft claws popped the latch. Pet was practically drooling.
You averted your eyes as he dug into the frozen raccoon meat. The harsh scarfing sounds painted a mental picture you didnât need to see as he polished it off.
Barely had he finished his last gulp before he was tossing through the cooler. Water bottles were shoved aside. Your own protein bars were untouched.Â
He turned to you in disappointment. âNo dessert?â
âI donât think you need ghoulette-fingers tonight, buddy,â you hauled yourself up.Â
Pet sank and flopped to the ground. A long suffering sigh dragged itself out of his chest. Truly, Satanâs strongest soldier.
If Petâs body didnât betray his inhuman natureâlong gangly limbs with sharp bones almost pressing through his skin, a mouth full of razor sharp teeth, delicate claws that could rip through flesh like tissue paperâ it was his intonation when he spoke. It warbled and stilted, flowed and stumbled in a way that never felt quite naturalâto him or you. As if the words never fit in his mouth. It took less time than you would have thought to stop thinking of it as eerie, moreso just as... Pet.
Over the next hour, the two of you went through your daily motions. He took you back into his nest within the yawning cave to show you the leftover deer carcass from last night (good job! you had said whilst suppressing a gag); you managed to get him hydrated and changed into cleaner clothes (not that he cared whatsoever about what he wore but you didnât want his skin to get irritated); and most importantly... tea time.
âAnd then,â you grumbled as you ran your fingers through Petâs greasy curls, âSister Imperator said Papa IIIâs ghouls should be dismissed. Dismissed, Pet! Back to hell!â
âThat bitch,â he agreed sagely. He was faced away from you now, while you worked on his hair. You knew he didnât truly understand why you were so heated.
âI know!â Your hands worked mindlessly, rubbing in shampoo. âItâs just like, theyâve given so many years of service to our ministry, and everybody knows how dedicated they still are to Papa III. I canât believe she would say something so callous.â
âI can kill her? Want, yes?â Pet chirped.
You sighed. âNo, but I appreciate the offer. I think Andrea is working it out with her. ...But Iâll let you know if we need you. Now, dunk.â
Pet held his breath as he sank underneath the water in the shallow pond within his cave. When he exploded back up, he shook himself thoroughly to dry off. Your face went flat. Good thing you brought a change of clothes; the soaked cotton clung heavy to your skin. âDude.â
You went to work rinsing the shampoo out completely.
âHow is he?â Pet said after a short silence.
âHe?â
âAndrea. Copia.â His pale eye met yours as he turned. Petâs eyes always made you shiver if you looked at them for too long. They looked just like Copiaâs. Same shape. Same irises. The left was more unsettling however, a little more hollow. Was it because of his curse?
You chewed your cheek as you started working in the conditioner. Your worries earlier came flooding back.Â
âI think he misses his home, back in Italy. Heâll never admit it but I can tell. He misses the language, the people. I even suggested a vacation, but no dice. Lately, heâs been speaking more Sicilian. âUâ me amuri. Ciatu miu.âÂ
âImpara u sicilianu pi iddu. Jè facili.âÂ
*Learn Sicilian for him. Itâs easy.
You froze. âWhat?â
âImpara a parrari u sicilianu.âÂ
*Learn to speak Sicilian.
âYou speak Italian?â you said incredulously. Your hands drop, frothy conditioner pushed to the wayside. You canât focus with this bombshell in your lap.
âE u sicilianu! Sempri, si.â
*And Sicilian! Always, yes.
Pet fully turned around to face you. His many teeth contorted his face uncomfortably as he grinned.
You sputtered. âEnglish, please. I donât speak Sicilian. Italian. Er, either of them. How long haveâ no. Why didnât you eâ no. What?â
He cocked his head playfully. âNot a secret. You never asked.â
With a groan, you rubbed your face. Something weird was happening and you didnât want to think about what it implied. The creature in the forest looks like your partner, speaks the same language as your partner, cannot be mentioned to your partner... Whatever. Whatever. Midnight is not the time to think about it.
Pet trilled. âI said. Learn Sicilian. Will make Andrea happy. I know.â
âYou know?â You quirked an eyebrow.
âI know,â he said confidently.Â
âHow do you know?âÂ
He thought about it for a second. âI... donât know.â
You groaned and flopped on your back. Your eyes were clamped shut. Petâs wash night was totally forgotten. âIâm not paid enough for this job.â
There was silence for a moment. Then a warbling voice chittered. âWill make him happy.â
You lolled your head to look at Pet. The sight struck you. Naked and covered in soap, eyes hopeful, looking rather small for a second. Which him did he mean, though?
Your smile was fragile. âHow am I supposed to learn? Not like Duolingo has a dialect option, Pet.â
âNicola,â he said.
You blinked. âNicola?â
âMy name?â He looked taken aback by himself. After a moment to ponder it, he nodded resolutely. âYes. My name.â
âDid you forget it?â You asked, quirking a brow.
âYes,â Pet repeated. He cocked his head. âMy name.â
You werenât sure how to process this new information. Your mouth crinkled in thought. Not only could Pet â Nicola? â speak Sicilian out of the blue, it seemed to have knocked something loose in his memory. How powerful was this connection to make him remember his old name after all this time cursed and locked up on the grounds? Youâd never asked how long he had been here, actually... There was something big happening here, and you had no idea what. But your friend was at the center of it.
Sucking in a breath, you stood. You came up around behind him, taking in his sudsy curls. You still had a job to do, and a friend to take care of. As you rinsed him off, you ruminated. âWell, Nicola, how do you suggest I learn, then?â
âI teach!â Pet perked up to look at you just in time for you to dump a cup full of water on his face. You giggled at his pout.
âYou think you could teach me?â
His maw of razors glimmered. The excitement was brimming out of him. âYou come here every night. Extra hour will not be strange. Say I need more help with summer hunt. Teach you sicilianu. Surprise Andrea. Less lonely!â
You had to admit, it wasnât the worst plan. If Copia couldnât take a break to visit his homeland, surprising him with Sicilian could at least be a comfort to him. Having only ascended a few months ago, you knew that his responsibilities were still new and drainingânot that he would admit it. A surprise would cheer him up.Â
âIâm in,â you declared. A happy rumbling sound erupted from Petâs throat and you hugged him tight. âLetâs start tomorrow. I just have one question, though. Pâ Nicola, when you said âless lonely,â did you mean Andrea or yourself?â
Caught. He toed the dirt bashfully. With a mirthless laugh he said, âBoth?â
For the first time it fully struck you how lonely he must be, all alone in this creepy forest besides the scant hours in which you visited him. How long has he been feeling this way? This was as much for him as it was for your relationship.
You pressed a kiss to his forehead.
âTeach me everything you know, Professore.â
âI canât do this anymore, Aether! I think itâs over.â Copia collapsed into the chest of his loyalest ghoul. Aetherâs pecs were the perfect pillow to dry Copiaâs tears as his chest heaved.
Aether took it stoically. Might as well let him get it out. âWhatâs over, C?â
âItâs ciatu miuâmy love. Thereâs something funny going on, Aether. Theyâve been disappearing longer and longer each night. Theyâre sneaking off in the middle of the day for hours. If I see them on their phone, they jump and close their apps. You know what it all means!â Copiaâs lip wobbled and he sunk into Aetherâs chest again. He squeezed his favorite ghoul around the middle like his favorite Squishmallow.
âSo you think theyâre cheating?â Aether surmised. What a strange idea to him. Since the beginning of your relationship, neither of you have been anything except smitten with each other. Even the other day, you had begun telling him about a big surprise you were planning for Copia, something meaningful to take his mind off things. You were oddly cryptic though. Infidelity is indeed a big surprise, he mused. Humans were strange like that.
âOf course! Canât you see? My ciccinaâs heart has been stolen by someone else in the ministry.â Copia deflated. âAether, how terrible of a partner am I?â
Aether folded his arms. âNow what is that supposed to mean?â
Copiaâs emotional support pectorals had been blockaded. He flopped back against the couch, staring hollow-eyed at the ceiling. âIâve been so busy with rehearsals and arranging rituals, yâknow, Papa things, Iâve been neglecting our relationship. Thatâs why theyâre running into the arms of someone else. Someone younger... sexier... probably has a higher score on Lego Star Wars than me. Aether, I think Iâve driven away the only person whoâs ever loved me.â
Aether rolled his eyes, or tried to. Men are stupid. Human men are stupid. Well... ghoul men too, actually. âOne, thatâs not true. The Psaltarians, me and the other ghouls, your friends, the other Papas, Imperator in her own weird, bitchy way â all love you. Two, youâre jumping to a lot of conclusions, buddy.â
âBuddy?â Copiaâs eye twitched. Hold on. He may be having a breakdown but that didnât mean he didnât still demand respect.
âLook, the only way to know for sure whatâs up with them is to just talk to them. Youâll drive yourself crazy the more you think about it, and you know it.âÂ
Aether spoke plainly and Copia had to admit he was probably right. He shifted in discomfort just thinking about confrontation. It might be a necessary evil, though. Despite his dramatics, Copia truly couldnât take much more of this. Every time you disappeared to who-knows-where to do who-knows-what with who-knows-who, it felt like a knife in his chest. Your distance had been growing for over a month now. It felt like an eternity. He wasnât sure when he first realized something had shifted but since he had, it had been driving him crazy. It was the way you had begun being secretive over your phone, and always writing something in a notebook you wouldnât let him see. The way you would rush in late for the date nights you did keep, hair dishevelled and clothes covered in pine needles. Everytime, Copiaâs mind flooded with torturous images of you and a mysterious stranger, having a quick fuck on the forest floor. That should have been his quick fuck! Some junior sibling could never make you come as hard as he could and he knew it.Â
Copiaâs brow wrinkled. Wait a minute. He was Papa. He wasnât going to accept disrespect from anybody, and he sure as shit wouldnât allow some stranger to take what was his. He had the authority here. This was his ministry. If someone wanted to steal his partner, they were going to have to answer to the ghoul pits. And him, of course. But the ghoul pits could handle the messy work.
As for you...
Copia jerked upright. He slapped his palm with a tight fist.Â
âYouâre right, Aether!âÂ
âYeah.â
âThe only way to win them over again is to fight for them!â
âThat is not what I said.â
âNo, no! I see it now.â An evil light shone in Copiaâs eye. âA competition of strength and virility. Once they see that rat compared with their Papa, theyâll remember how much they love me and theyâll come running back. Thatâs a great idea, Aether! Now, how do I find this- this lotharioââ
Before Copia could get carried away with his stupid idea, Aether clasped a tight hand on his shoulder. Copia froze.Â
Aether leaned in. Through the darkened glass of his goggles, Copia could see right into the sunken hollow sockets that once held Aetherâs eyes. Like black holes, they sucked him inâas if he was staring into the gates of hell, straight into the Pit, where no light or hope ever shone. A petrified cold dumped over Copia.Â
His ghoul ignored his shiver. âGo. Talk. To. Your. Partner.â
Without another word, Aether stood and left Copiaâs office.Â
The silence of the empty room was ringing in Copiaâs mind. To nobody, he spoke loudly, as if his own speech could fill the void of where his missing friend just sat. âYes, well... maybe thatâs a good first step. We should talk first. Good idea. Good idea. Heh. Heheh.â
... âBut if that doesnât work, the ghoul pits are plan B.â
Oh boy. How was Copia going to do this?
With a sigh, you tried to recite some of the phrases Nicola had been teaching you. âT'amu. Tu sii ma stella brillanti. Tutto chiddo ca vocchiu iè fariti felici.â
*I love you. Youâre my shining light. All I want is to make you happy.
You groaned. The pronunciation was off but the words were still so new that your tongue wouldnât shape the vowels correctly.
Even after more than a month of practice, of Pet trying to teach you romantic phrases and basic vocabulary so you could sweep your partner off his feet, the words still felt clumsy in your mouth. You knew a month wasnât such a long time, so you werenât exactly going to be waxing Shakespeare yetâand Pet had had his own struggles trying to get the words out, which didnât make it any easier. Yet, youâd been spending so many hours of your free time trying to write and recite and read as much as you could find. Youâd hoped for more progress than this.
Your notebook of vocab and phrases stared at you tauntingly. The words were almost swimming off the page. At this rate, it would take months before you could have a proper conversation with Copia in Sicilian.Â
Sinking into your pillows as you mumbled halting phrases to yourself, you didnât notice your partner walking into your shared bedroom.
Copia cleared his throat; you startled and slammed your notebook shut. Your deer-in-the-headlights eyes shot an arrow through Copiaâs heart. He tried not to think the worst of what you could have been reading, but his traitorous mind filled in the blanksâsecretive love letters, diary pages crammed with sweet nothings, maybe even your and your mystery infidelâs hyphenated last names? Who knew how deep this affair went!
âAndrea! I didnât hear you come in,â you fretted. You shoved your notebook under the covers. Too late to hide it, but hopefully he wouldnât peek inside.Â
Copia sat down on the edge of the bed. He wouldnât meet your eyes. âYes, well... apologies. Rehearsal went late.â
âHow did it go?â
âFine. Just fine. Weâll be ready for the music festival soon.â
âThatâs great.â
There was a pregnant pause. Neither of you knew what to say; something heavy hung in the air. The full moon shone through your window, casting half his face in blue and milky white. The dim lamp on your bedside table warmed the other half. With his paints still on, carving his features to mimic a ratâs skull, your partner looked a perfect mix of menacing and beautiful. Hellish yet angelic. Your heart softened. Remember why youâve been doing this.
You both spoke in unison. âCan we talkâ?â
You froze as you looked at each other; the discomfort thawed. Copia stammered. âYes, of course, amore. What was it you wanted to talk about?â
âWait,â you took his hand. âBefore we do anything, take off the paints?â
âThe paints?â
âI need to see you for this. The real you.â
Worry shone in Copiaâs eyes, but he disappeared into the en suite as you requested. Minutes ticked by as he scrubbed his paints down the drain, along with his self-confidence. As he washed his face, he felt like an anxious, bumbling Cardinal all over again.Â
He returned to you barefaced and serious. You pressed down a smile when you saw some leftover white still clinging to his sideburns. With a pat to his side of the bed, you beckoned your partner forward. Copia crawled in next to you. The cotton sheets were 900 count but they still chafed at him. When you took his hands and held them tight, his heart softened even as it broke. Everything except this moment fell away. All that mattered now was you.
âSo...â he began. âAs you were saying?â
You suck in a deep breath. Might as well cut right to itâ âAndrea, Iâve been hiding something from you and I donât want to keep it in anymore.â
Tears sprung to Copiaâs eyes. This was it. The end of it all. âYouâre seeing someone else.â
âIâ wait, what?â you shook your head. Where did Copia get that from?
âYou donât have to keep it from me, ciccina. I know whatâs been going on,â his head hung low, voice filled with despair. âIâve been terrible lately.â
âAndrea, whaââ
âAether helped me figure it out. How youâve been more distant than usual, and hiding things. I havenât been here for you. You know, I- Iâve canceled date nights; all the midnight rituals have taken up so much of my time. Iâve spent so many nights eating my feelings with Cherry Garcia and Spaceballs instead of being with you. Iâve put my job above our relationship, and I realize now that itâs pushed you away.âÂ
Copia tried valiantly to avoid crying, but the traitorous tears spilled over. He couldnât even be strong for you right here and now. His shame was immense. With a small surprised sound, you grabbed a tissue for him; he blew his nose with a loud honk.
You hugged him tight. âAndrea, you havenât pushed me away. Where did you get this idea?â
âYouâve been disappearing!â he weeped into his tissue. âI know you say youâre just doing your job but itâs never taken this long before. And you hide your phone. I should have expected youâd find someone else if I neglected you. Just Tell me one thingâdo they have a higher score on Lego Star Wars than me?â
You ignored his pleading eyes. âNo, my love, because this other person is a man who lives in the woods.â
...
The silence stretched thin. The gears ground to a halt in Copiaâs head as he tried to logic it out. You patted his hand.
His voice was small. âYouâre picking a homeless guy over me?â
You sputtered. âNo! Andrea. Iâve been disappearing more because of my job. Look, Iâm not allowed to tell you anything, technically, but you should know this anyway. My role isnât just taking care of the grounds. Thereâs a creature-man, man-creature, um, guy who lives in the forest.â
âThe haunted forest?â Copia squeaked.
âItâs not haunted, itâs just foggy,â you wave a hand. âI take care of him. This guy. He struggles to manage on his own so I visit him and make sure heâs safe. Thatâs all. Iâm not picking him over you, and Iâm not in love with him. Heâs my friend.â
You softened thinking about Nicola. Over the past month, youâve watched him blossom under your increased time together. His language was slowly improving, as well as his understanding of human mannerisms. It felt like domesticating a feral cat. He wouldnât really need you to help take care of himself before long enough, you thought. Even now, when you visit most of your time was spent talking and snacking. Though, he still couldnât recall anything about his old life before he wound up in the forest, or anything besides his name. There was so much about him that was so mysterious to you.
Copia considered. âThen, if youâre not in love with this... guyââ He tried not to spit out the word. ââthen why have you been spending so much extra time with him?â
For the first time that evening, you smiled at him. "PicchĂ ti amu, babbo.âÂ
*Because I love you, silly.
Copiaâs mouth dropped open.
As usual, the words felt clumsy in your mouth but you tried your best. âVogghiu parrari u sicilianu cu tia. Si statu triste pi misi, Andrea, e se u parru cu tia, non sarai chiu solo. Se nun possiamo iri in Sicilia, dugnu a Sicilia a tia.âÂ
*I want to speak Sicilian with you. You are sad for months, Andrea, and if I speak it with you, you wonât be lonely. If we canât go to Sicily, I give Sicily to you.
âH...how?â Stars were filling Copiaâs eyes. He was speechless.
âU mo amico nda foresta insegna u sicilianu a mia. Iddu è ri Catania, comu a tia, amore miu. Ti piacerĂ .âÂ
*My friend in the forest teaches Sicilian to me. He is from Catania, like you, my love. You will like him.
âHeh...heheh.â Once Copia started laughing, he couldnât stop. Another tear slipped from his eye, this time from relief instead of despair. He fell back into the pillows, trying to catch his breath. Valiantly, he managed to push down his laughter.
You blushed. Was your pronunciation that bad? Maybe telling him so early was a bad idea. âWhats so funny?âÂ
Copiaâs head flopped to look at you. The lovestruck look in his eyes made your heart clench.Â
He cradled your face in your hands and brought you in for a kiss. In all of your relationship with Andrea, it was the softest kiss youâd ever shared. Against your lips, he whispered. âT'amu accussĂŹ tantu.â
*I love you so much.
You buried your face into Copiaâs neck as you cuddled close to him. It definitely wasnât so that he wouldnât see the bright blush on your face. The words hit differently now that you could understand them.
His lips traced your hairline. âNow, tell me more. What else have you learned?â
âCiatu miu,â you said. Copia hummed in appreciation. âAmuri mio. Significhi tuttu pi mia. A lot of sweet nothings like that.âÂ
*My breath. My love. You mean the world to me.
Copia kissed your temple. His voice lowered as he murmured into your ear. âSai, 'n to' tocco basterebbe a sostenermi pi u restu da mo vita. Dimmillu e murirei pi tia, ucciderei pi tia. Tu si a mo vita, u'me respiro, u'me patruni. Lucifero stissu avissi adorare l'altare du to' corpo e di la to anima. Ma u'to cori è tuttu miu. U'to piacĂŹri è tuttu miu. Nessun autru pò averti comu pozzu fari iu.
*You know, one touch of yours would be enough to sustain me the rest of my life. Tell me to and I would die for you, I would kill for you. You are my life, my breath, my master. Lucifer himself should worship at the altar of your body and soul. But your heart is all mine. Your pleasure is all mine. No one else can have you like I can.
âCatch any of that?â Copia smirked.
That tease. You pouted. âA word here or there... Itâs harder to understand when you speak so quickly.â
He chuckled. âYouâll learn, baby. It comes with time, and practice.â
As Andreaâs lips travelled down your jawline, you sighed. The air shifted. Your hands traced the firm muscles of his back. They were less defined than they were when he was Cardinal, hidden under softened flesh. Being Papa meant he was encouraged to indulgeânot merely allowed. His weight pressed pleasantly against you.Â
âWill you practice with me, then?â you said.
âChiaro,â his teeth traced your pulse point. âOgni jornu.âÂ
*Of course. Every day.
Your grasp around him tightened. You gasped as he started sucking a mark into your neck. Teeth nibbling into your sensitive flesh sent goosebumps up your body. His hips pushed against you; already he had a semi. Though, when didnât he?
âTell me,â Copia nibbled on the shell of your ear as he started grinding his hips into your thigh. âYour friend didnât teach you any dirty words, did he?â
âNo,â you admitted. Youâd be lying if you said you hadnât thought of asking Pet. And yet... âI wouldnât want to learn those from him, anyway. Weâre close but not like that.â
âGood,â Copia said roughly.Â
Your hands wandered to his chest as he started guiding you onto your back. You indulged in squeezing handfuls of his plush pecs before you turned the tables. In a moment, you pushed him hardâhe flopped prostrate into the pillows. His two-toned eyes widened in surprise.Â
You straddled his hips. With a sigh, you ground down onto his twitching semi. Copia choked on a moan. His hands gripped your thighs.
âCiccina?â
âLike you said, Andrea, I need a lot of practice,â you cocked your head. âNow, youâre going to teach me every dirty word you know. But Iâm a hands-on learner, so Iâm going to need some thorough demonstrations.â
The dim lamplight reflected in your eyes was reminiscent of hellish flames. Copia felt himself falling in love all over again. His fallen angel, hellsent just for him.
âWe have all night,â he murmured.
Over the next few hours, you did indeed learn quite a lot. And you think so did the rest of the east wing suites. By his second orgasm, Copia had forgotten his English, crying out in Sicilian, until he forgot even that by the third. Under the moonlight, Copia passed out with an empty cock, arms full with your body cradled against him, and a fuller heart knowing heâd found his soulmate.
âCiccina, are you sure this is safe?â Copia fretted as you dragged him down the well-trodden path. âItâs pretty dark tonight, maybe we should come back tomorrow when thereâs less clouds.â
âTrust me, tesoro,â you cooed. âItâs only a little further.â
You squeezed his hand in reassurance. Copia gulped, but he squeezed back. He hedged, âI trust you... I think. Hold me closer, though?â
You guided him with ease, arm around his side as you plunged into the mist of the haunted forest. Every branch in the dirt, you nimbly hopped over; Copia tripped on every one. Once, his face thwacked into a prickly pine branch. Unnerved by the silence of the forest, Copia filled it with his voice. He spoke of everything and nothing. You listened intently, chiming in occasionally, but largely you let him cope as he needed. You felt bad for dragging him out here, but he needed this. All three of you needed this.
A growl cut through his monologue, freezing him where he stood. He whimpered. âCiccina?â
You rubbed his back soothingly. âJust a little further. Itâs safe, I promise.â
Barely had you spoken when a figure pounced from out of the mist. Petâs form was a blur. He shoved Copia down to the ground; your partner screamed and you reeled back. What on earthâ?
Your terror that Pet had reverted back to his bestial instincts was short-lived. Copiaâs flesh remained intact. With clenched eyes, Copia whimpered, âHeâs growling, heâs going to eat me, heâs going to eat meââ
You cut him off as you approached. âAndrea, heâs not eating you, heâs hugging you.â
Indeed, Pet was all but purring as he had Copia in a vice grip of a hug. Copia didnât notice, still whimpering and close to tears. You grabbed Petâs shirt collar and hauled him off. He reluctantly slank back.Â
It took Copia longer than he was willing to admit to realize he didnât have the bloodthirsty maw of a monster clamped into his neck. When he opened his eyes and saw you, relief flooded into him. When he found the wide hopeful gaze of the person behind you, he blinked in surprise. Despite this guyâs odd proportions, it was his eyes that struck Copia. Even in the darkness of the night, Copia could see the otherâs two-toned irises. It was like looking into a mirror.
You helped Copia to his feet. He coughed, trying to salvage his pride, and dusted himself off. He murmured his thanks.Â
The two strangers eyed each other up for a moment. The tension was thicker than any of you were expecting. Something unspoken hung in the air.
Copia had had no idea what to make of this creature-man thatâs been living on his grounds for who-knows how long. This person with mysterious origins, who spoke his dialect and shared his eyes. Only his eyes though. It put Copia on edge.Â
Pet couldnât resist the buoyant hope rising inside of him. Something about Copia had intrigued him since the day you first mentioned him all those months ago. He wasnât sure why. All he knew is that heâd felt an intense connection to this stranger. Heâd needed to know more.Â
âIntroductions.â You broke the silence. The seriousness of your own voice surprised you. You took Petâs knobbly-fingered hand and pulled him forward. The two strangers were eye-to-eye. âNicola... this is Andrea.â
Something about the name Nicola sparked something inside Copia. A recognition he couldnât quite place. A buzzing hummed under his skin.
âAndrea,â you rubbed Copiaâs arm. âMeet Nicola.â
The other manâs lips quirked up into an all-too-familiar smile. A little toothier. A little older. But Copia remembered. He suddenly remembered far, far too much.Â
