iâm back again thinking abt the differences between Alastor and Vox
they both want power, but their reasons are very different, as are their relationships to others around them who do/donât have power
afaict, as a human, Alastor starts killing in response to being subjugated by someone else (for that first kill anyway, idk about the rest). when he summons Rosie and asks her to make him the strongest demon in hell, he literally says itâs so that he wonât be weak, so ppl will leave him alone and heâll be able to continue with his âfunâ. it doesnât sound like he necessarily wants /power over others/ â he just wants power so people wonât mess with him. bc heâs seen from experience on Earth that if youâre lower down the food chain, people will mess with you and it sucks.
thereâs also the couple of times we see him dealing w/people weaker than him. ppl commenting on his S1 recap song on YouTube have pointed out that he could have been more mocking towards Angelâs situation, but instead he just calls Angel a âtragic victim of circumstanceâ. and then thereâs the prequel comic where the butcher starts bullying/abusing the lamb, so Alastor goes back into the shop and rips the butcher apart saying he doesnât like it when ppl behave like that. (idk what status the prequel comics occupy, if they were officially pulled offline maybe theyâre no longer considered canon, but iâm also like, if this wasnât important why would the creators show it in a comic to begin with lol.) thereâs also the factoid in the fan wiki where the creator mentions if any serial killer inspired Alastor it would be Dexter, who killed using a specific code, which dictated he only kill Bad People. iâm defo not arguing that Alastor is some sort of crusader who only kills baddies to save others, bc he clearly doesnât â he kills at random w/o knowing what pplâs deals are, he kills bc he enjoys it (talking abt pplâs screams on his broadcast etc), he clearly doesnât care enough abt Angelâs situation to actually do anything to help. itâs more that i donât think he goes out of his way to pick on weaker folk bc itâs easier â in fact itâs prob more thatâs exactly why he /doesnât/ do it, itâs too easy and therefore boring. and maybe he has a bit of empathy for these ppl bc he faced similar shit when he was alive.
Alastor and ppl /more/ powerful than him, on the other hand: the most significant group of demons he went after in hell were the other Overlords. the person he opts to fuck with for fun at the hotel? the literal king of hell. when he (supposedly) perceives Vox as weak he laughs at him and blows him off, when Vox is at his strongest heâs suddenly all up in his business excited to fight him. (imo there was no other reason for that fight except that and perhaps pride, Alastor couldâve easily fucked off with his freedom and not bothered confronting Vox at all.) thereâs also how, during the S1 finale fight, he fought the most powerful angel in the army: Adam (altho one could argue he only did this as part of the hotelâs wider defense plan.)
/however/, he doesnât seem to fight these ppl to a greater end. he doesnât need/want anything from them. heâs already the most powerful sinner in hell, what does he have to gain from defeating other Overlords? i genuinely think heâs just here for a laff and does all that bc he finds it fun.
/on the other hand/, we have Vox. from what we can see of his life as a human, said life seems fine. he doesnât have the most glamorous job ever, but he seems comfortable. importantly, none of the ppl he kills are directly doing anything negative to him. theyâre just out there living their lives, but they occupy positions higher than Vox/that he wants, so he offs them. he kills out of ambition, bc he wants power, attention, for ppl to follow him, and to be âhigherâ than others. then ofc when he gets to hell he builds his whole media empire, and seems to control a lot of aspects of hell and its inhabitantsâ lives even before the events of S2.
anyway, this brings me to the rejection conversation yet again: Voxâs proposition is that Alastor rule hell alongside him, as his partner. as i just went over, Alastor has never shown any desire to rule over anyone, lol. he just doesnât doesnât want ppl to rule over /him/. i might go as far to argue that in that moment Vox mightâve reminded him of some of the ppl he killed. i really think Vox just gave him the ick with that aspect of the proposition lol
i also think itâs telling that Vox was a white man as a human and Alastor was mixed, lmao. Vox really makes me think of those studies that have been conducted where if you put white men in a room with women or other minorities and the latter talk 50% and itâs actually equal, the white dudes will perceive it as the after group talking /more/ than 50% and therefore unfair to them, lol. i rly think Vox prob thinks of himself as a victim bc he didnât get the things he âdeservedâ (ascending to the top of the TV network as a human, ruling heaven and hell as a demon), when ofc whether he really deserves those things or not remains to be seen
