Shane set out to learn Russian because he didn't want the burden of communicating in their second language to always fall on Ilya, by default. He also wanted to learn more about Ilya's culture through the language, he wanted to hear his husband make jokes in his mother tongue, to get to know the side of him that comes out entirely unimpeded when he doesn't have to filter himself through his second language. He expected to mostly use it at home, perhaps especially when Ilya was feeling overwhelmed. However, once Shane actually learns Russian to the point that he's fully conversational, they mostly use it to shit talk people in public.

I'm all out of elegant well-phrased thoughts. Anyone else think Ilya "gonna butter him up so he stays" Rozanov sucked Shane off on the countertop when Shane got to his house in episode four? Like, he didn't pull that move of lifting Shane onto the countertop just to kiss right? It was Step 1A of his grand plan, titled: "suck him off while in a half-squat." Anyone else think he made Shane come like three times so that by the time he asked Shane to stay the night Shane was like 90% sex hormone, 5% Hockey on TV later, 4% hungry guy, and 1% thinking brain? Forget the tuna melts. Ilya was like "I have to exhaust him physically and deposit him on the couch with hockey on TV in comfy oversized sweats and his favorite Canadian soda." Ilya knew he couldn't put on a shirt this day. The shirtlessness was the primary anchor of The Plan. All this was planned. And the son of a bitch almost pulled it off.

There’s something so important about when Ilya calls himself lazy that Shane says “I don’t know that side of you at all” like all Ilya’s heard for his whole life is that he’s lazy and not good enough. Then for this person who is the best at what you and him do to tell you you aren’t??? I think that moment is where we see Ilya finally accept that not only is he in love with the Shane (he knew that already) but also that Shane actually sees him as someone worth being with. Which makes the tuna meltdown that much harder.

don't get me wrong i love the fact that shane and ilya retcon their relationship to be love at first sight. like good for them!! but when i look at the source material im like .. you were charmed. you were jealous. he had everything you wanted (supportive family and his country behind him, able to be big and brash and move through life with ease) and you wanted to see if you could make him feel good (can you debauch the golden boy, can you be good for the man who's had everyone) but the love didn't come until you started to take apart the things that attracted you to this person in the first place. shane fell in love with the ilya who checked in on him and with the sweetness behind the barbs and with the ilya who couldn't stop kissing him in that stairwell. and ilya fell in love with the shane who thinks buffalo is stupid and can barely get his shoes off before he throws himself at ilya and can't tell his parents he's gay because he's suffocating behind his own image not because he thinks they don't love him but because he wants to honor everything they've done for him. and so it's really nice that ilya goes "i loved you from the first time i saw you" but i, omniscient reader, call bullshit. i think you love that boy now because no version of you could ever not love any version of him. but at the time i think you were mostly just curious and then the love grew despite all odds in the most hostile of circumstances because everything you learned about each other made you want more and more and more. and also probably that's even MORE beautiful. so.
