POSTCARDS FROM MOROCCO 🇲🇦 Our first morning in Morocco was spent walking on the promenade of Tangier. It was before 9am and I've barely had my Starbucks coffee, but I've been hit on, catcalled and invited into strangers' cars countless times already. The disproportionate ratio of men and women on the streets was something I immediately noticed. As a woman I've never felt so uncomfortable and unsafe in my entire life than in Morocco. You can directly feel the gender inequality of the culture and the street harassment is horrific. I've been told to either (a) ignore it or (b) take it as a compliment (c) that I'm too sensitive. (a) you can only ignore kissy noises and "ah so nice" for so long before you want to punch someone in the face. The other day in the Marrakesh medina I was crying from rage. How can it not bother you? (b) being reduced to a sack of meat for the consumption of strange men on the street is not a compliment. It's a power play - I'm defenseless and I'm being disrespected. I'm being denied my freedom, safety, dignity and humanity. (c) Yes, I am aware that I freely chose to visit a Muslim country and I carefully curated my clothing to be respectful and modest. But, I am allowed to be angry. I am allowed to be furious by how my sisters are being treated around the world. I am allowed to be frustrated by the harassment I am receiving purely for being female. I am allowed to be fucking exhausted. You know what's the worst of all? If my boyfriend was accompanying me, I would not have experienced this. Because, they respect my boyfriend more than me. I matter.
