It apparently started even before i knew her. When he was a younger teen they would disappear from home and sleep wherever she could. A little mini adventure to herself. His parents never reported them missing even when she was gone for a month at a time.

It was like they expected her to do it and just come back.

And usually when she comes back, he's usually a lot better. I think somehow theyve tricked their brain at some point to treat those periods of time as a moment of respite and time to reorganize everything, even if unbelievably dangerous.

I really don't understand the process, but I can imagine what ever got her all so stressed really does make her need to think things through before she tries to proceed. Some people can manage to do that in their own home. I don't think Luce has ever felt safe enough in a home to do that.
