Not only that, but it shows their complete ignorance on how the wave system even works.
They lump together all forms of feminism under these waves as if they are all the same thing, and treat each wave as if it is a type of feminism.
That’s not how feminism works, though.
There are thousands of branches of feminism fighting this fight in different ways. That was true in the first and second waves and it’s true now. The wave system only suggests what time period in which this feminism took place. It doesn’t tell you anything about what all feminists believe, how they acted, etc. If you look at the second wave, lots of feminists disagreed with each other and argued with each other’s points, because they practiced different types of feminism and had different beliefs, ideas, and values. For example, bell hooks criticized Betty Friedan for ignoring women of color and for assuming the middle-class white woman’s experience is the experience of all women. These kinds of disagreements still occur all the time. Feminism is not a hive mind and while all feminists agree that the patriarchy needs to be stopped and women deserve equal rights, there are many different approaches to getting these equal rights and much disagreement over what rights women need to get.
So when antifeminists say that the second wave was so superior to the current feminist movement because those feminists fought for real rights and modern feminists don’t, they are ignoring the fact that not all second wavers believed and acted the same way or fought for the same things, and neither do modern feminists. Some second wavers were terrible and some were brilliant, while some were somewhere in between. The same is true today of modern feminists.
They are being selective in what types of feminists to which they expose themselves in order to make their case. They hold the belief that modern day feminism is bad, so they point to the worst modern feminists they can find to make their case and ignore the good ones, while comparing them to the best feminists of the past and ignoring the bad ones:
And you’ll notice their arguments are filled with logical fallacies.
For example, when a feminist struggles to articulate their point, antifeminists say that means they are wrong.
They also point to famous people or women who don’t think we need feminism anymore to prove that it’s useless.
And how often do they mock feminists for how they look, or for being bad people and believing horrible things that we don’t actually believe, just to make us look bad?
And many times, they just don’t understand what a feminist is saying, and that’s why they think it’s wrong.
Basically, you shouldn’t let these people manipulate you. You’re doing the best you can and are fighting and important fight. The arguments they use against you are flawed at best, and as the OP said, this isn’t a new thing that is in any way personal but rather the result of a hatred/fear of feminism as well as good old-fashioned misogyny.
Don’t let them discourage you. It’s hard, but you can do it.
And maybe someday, a young feminist will be as inspired by and in awe of you are we are of many of the best second wavers.
