Synopsis/Excerpt:

Tony glances over from his small workshop in their shared closet, reading the sign: CLOSED FOR MAINTENANCE. He nods at Eddie. “You two doin’ alright?” He twirls the wrench in his hand and nearly knocks himself in the skull with it. “Need any help?”

Eddie shakes his head with an amused smile. “Just playing catch-up with some repairs. We’re fine, Tony, thanks for asking.” And they are fine. They’re better than fine. In fact they aren’t really closing for repairs at all.

But Tony doesn’t need to know about how Eddie has spent all day fixing up the club for Volt, all for an audience of one. The two of them don't want any distractions or prying eyes. Not for this performance. Not for this treasured moment. Volt is Eddie's favorite distraction, and more than that, Volt is his.

The Black Nerd. A common character type, the nerd will always be very interested in all things nerdy: science, video games, mathematics, etc. In an continued effort to combat stereotypes, the Black Nerd will be lack athleticism, probably being asthmatic (the nerdiest of conditions). The Black Nerd will dress smartly, suspenders and bow ties. They’ll always talk smart too, using proper English with complex words.

Now, I don’t have a problem with a black character being a nerd, indeed black people are a people; we aren’t all the same and we all have varying personalities. The problem I have is that too often we see a distinct disconnect between Blackness and the Black Nerd. The Black Nerd doesn’t listen to hip hop or rap, only classical music. The Black Nerd only has white friends, the only other black characters are into not nerdy stuff. The Black Nerd never ever uses AAVE at any time in any context.

Grandpa: (in all caps text) "At Cracker Barrel. Hostess is overwhelmed. Rocking chairs all occupied. Grandma entering the country store to regroup. More soon."

“Grace says he would like half of dome to be water.”

“Oh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?”

Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. “No. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.”

“Tell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.”

“No. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.”

“Grace want this liquid for celebration.”

“Of course.” They scan it. “You have wrong liquid. This contain compounds which are poisonous for humans.”

“Yes yes yes. Grace say humans like feeling of being slightly poisoned.”
