little guys
"it's ok to show (x) in fiction as long as the bad guy gets punished!" the bad guy doesn't have to get punished. in fact the bad guy can win altogether. the bad guy can entirely get away with it. hope this helps
and this part might make some people's head explode but: characters can be written to forgive things you personally wouldn't ever forgive. not everything is written as what you'd perceive to be the right choice. not everything is a self-insert & protagonists don't have to be relatable.
The pebbles forgive me, the trees forgive me, so why cant you forgive me?

Close up on Matt giving Jay a secret message
tumblr is the website for if you're just someone's weird sister
I think mostly what young fandom types (and I guess younger people in general) who are very very invested in the idea that “20 is still basically a minor” need to understand is that the feeling of “I’m just a child pretending to be an adult, and everyone else around me is a REAL adult” is DEEPLY universal (and won’t stop, ever, by the way, sorry!) and also is not, like, praxis.
Believe me, I get it, but the self-infantilization needs to stop, especially when you’re trying to engage in conversations about actual children and the harms they can face. Yes, it is scary to wake up and realize you’re 22 and you still feel like you’re 15, but it happens to all of us. You’re an adult. You have to deal with it.
Like I'm nearing 40 and I don't feel significantly different as a person than I did at 20, other than being less depressed.
I know I'm different bc i respond in different ways to things now, but there's not a sense of "ah yes I am become adult" that's for fuckin sure. It's normal. It's okay. So stop infantilizing yourselves about it.
And stop infantilizing others about it, too. Yes, you're realizing at 25 that you still don't feel like an adult, but you cannot use that feeling to let yourself think of people who are younger than you as "even less of an adult than I am" when they are, in fact, adults. And you have to be very, very careful not to let that feeling convince you that it's okay for young adults to have fewer rights.
There's no age at which you magically stop being worried that you're not doing it right or well enough. Every single person alive is the oldest they've ever been and we are ALL winging it. Being scared of getting it wrong doesn't mean that you shouldn't be allowed to get it wrong.
It is universal, and it doesn't end.
I'm 44, I'm the adultier-adult most of my adult friends go to for help buying a house, doing home repairs, buying a car etc.
and I'm still pretty sure I'm 12. I'm just now 12 buying alcohol like whatever and with a mortgage. It's fine, I've fooled them all.
you know those studies showing that cursing helps with pain tolerance or whatever. that’s how i feel about making my weird little noises to get through my basic daily activities. sometimes you just have to go hggblaaaah for a minute so you can find the strength within yourself to get up or wash the dishes or send an email. mmmnneh. urgh. the torments are unending but you can always make some little sounds about it.
i always find it funny that the general audience's reaction to that scene was like, there goes tom keeping greg with him like a pet! because he needs someone to humiliate! this is greg's punishment! and like. imagine being so insensitive to emotions when they aren't explicitly stated on screen, that you see those faces and the first thing you think is humiliation.
i feel like these people saw their dynamic up to season two and did not care enough to notice how it inevitably changed in s3/s4. yes, there was a time where greg did not mean more than a punch bag to tom– but those days are over, lmao.
and btw, greg is not oblivious– he's very aware to when he's being put down, as we see when tom asks him to bring him coffee in America Decides. if tom's "i got you" was anything close to a bad thing, he'd know. look at his naughty smirk here and tell me he's not exactly where he wants to be.
