accidentally wrote βnever mill yourselfβ like yeah i donβt think anyone would do that unless theyβre wheat or perhaps a rice
what the fuck happens in Magic the Gathering dawg
Milling is slang for the mechanic of putting cards from the top of your deck/library into your discard/graveyard pile. It comes from the card Millstone, one of the earliest cards printed with this mechanic.
Actually when I say βfuck all billionairesβ I particularly mean Taylor βhaving my wedding in the middle of the busiest city in the world on the busiest weekend in the world in the part of the city the majority of commuters need to get through because fuck working peopleβ Swift
fuck you if you like this dumb nepo baby white supremacist.
The Kids just aren't being taught how to write a cv or cover letter huh
I've seen ones today including photos, dates of birth, place of birth even!
And also several formatted like they were writing a message to a friend! Full of exclamation marks! This is a formal document!
this one is formatted like a powerpoint presentation. to be clear I'm not in charge of any descision making I'm just going through redacting identifying/potentially biasing info but like...some of these formatting decisions are also potentially biasing
Yeah, I remember getting some wild ones when I was hiring manager
So many women feel the need to mention their young children in their cover letters and CVs. Some young people slip in that they can't drive, a sort of pre-emptive "but it's okay I have a bus pass". So many people go and shove their mental health issues with anxiety and depression in there.
I remember one girl had clearly been told that she needed to explain any gaps in employment in the cover letter (terrible blanket advice), and so had described how she had developed depression after a traumatic miscarriage and spent a year in a terrible spiral getting worse and worse before getting on a new medication that, and I quote, "seemed to be finally starting to work." There are ways she could have written that information if she was desperately wanting to include it (I cannot stress enough that she should not have included a word of it), but the way it was written was almost literally a description of how she would be a horrendously unreliable employee who could dip out at a moment's notice and would never be seen again, while also demonstrating that she cannot determine appropriate professional communication.
(And for the record, the latter is the actual issue. I have no problems at all hiring employees with mental health issues, and did several times hire people in recovery to help them get back on their feet. Only once did that not work out; all others were amazing, and two became some of our best employees - one is now a manager there, in fact. But if an employee can't be trusted not to over share personal information with customers or colleagues, particularly triggering topics... That's a different issue. She did herself no favours at all there, and nor did whoever told her employers will always need employment gaps explaining in a cover letter).
Another guy once wrote in his cover letter "I want this job because after years of messing about I now have a little girl, so I need to sort my life out for her, and if I can't do it even for her then more fool me." Which, like, I admire the drive and passion. But again. Why are you telling an employer that you're a flight risk. Why are you telling us this.
One 18 year old volunteered, unforced, that he was gay. Just right in the cover letter. That he sent to a future employer.
And then, of course, the thousands that send in CVs and cover letters that are horrendously mis-spelled. Again, as an employer, I care dick-all if you're dyslexic or what have you; but I do care that you didn't think it was important to get someone to proofread a professional document for you before submission. That tells me quite a big thing about the level of professionalism I can expect from you in the role. It wasn't massively relevant for the job I was hiring for (escape room game master), but if we'd had slightly different job duties (e.g. writing official soc med posts), that would be the difference between getting an interview or not.
Honestly, half of my role as a hiring manager was just... having to explain to the other hiring manager that she was being biased based on information neither of us should have had in the first place. And she wasn't a bad person, but bias gets you even if you don't want it to. Give yourself the best chance. Don't fuck it by sending in a dumbass cover letter.
Linking @bitchesgetriches great advice on cover letter writing here...
Welcome back to another episode of The Bitches Teach You How to Get Your Ass Hired! Last time we reviewed some cardinal rules of resume writ
i think this is the funniest possible image that could be used to illustrate this subject
OK FUN FACT i also thought this picture was hilarious when i encountered it a few months ago, so i was curious how it ended up on wikipedia
it turns out the uploader is in fact the woman in the photo (she's uploaded a few other pictures of herself to other articles) and she ran an extremely web 1.0 site on the topic of bondage
this was apparently a long-standing fantasy of hers and she in fact did an entire video plus accompanying photoshoot about it, which was run in a bondage magazine in the 90s and did in fact take place on an abandoned train track. they committed to the bit hard enough that there's even a shot of the sinister villain looming over her with a big document labeled DEED and a pen
the best part is that according to this page, there were two "villains" involved (the woman's two partners, apparently), and the other one was dressed as a gorilla. sadly there are no images of the gorilla kidnapper because that sounds like. even funnier.
anyway i thought this whole thing was kinda cute, lol

Omg this looks like some sort of Fairytale Horror; like, a town with trees that have missing pets or people etched into them- coming off naturally enough to be dismissed as bark/tree discolouration
The framing of this image is just perfect subtle horror.Β
Chill itβs a pole
you missed the tree entirely didnt you buddy
HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK
#how long have we been holding on to this one?
iβve had this queued for 365 days
people foolishly dismiss desserts and treats as having no nutritional value when they actually are necessary for refilling your sanity stat. to prove my point please observe the emotional stability of the next person you meet who doesnt let themselves ever eat any form of dessert

Love how every article about cold sores open with "well they look ugly as fuck. Every cold sore is so fucking ugly and disgusting. Fucking gross if you have one."
do you have any advice?
eat a protein heavy breakfast. donβt shop on shein. itβs never too late to get more educated. tell people you love them. listen to birds. go to an old growth forest. get really good at something, just to see if you can.
abortion clicker early game : you click the belly 50 times in order to perform one abortion. this lets you buy a doctor who performs 0.1 abortions a second.
abortion clicker mid game: you own hundreds of clinics as well as think-tanks which dismantle sex ed courses as well as politicians which strengthen pro choice institutions
abortion clicker late game: the solar systemβs resources have been stripped to build a dyson sphere which incubates trillions of humans for the sole purpose of performing abortions on them. once we achieve hyperspace travel, other stars will power superintelligent machines which will simulate octillions of abortion a second
No googling, curious about something
If someone is "favouring their left leg" as they walk, which leg is injured?
Left leg
Right leg
Things are going well

When a horse doth stand but firme vpon..three feete..fauoring the other.
G. Markham, Cavelarice ii. Cited in the OED. 1607 usage.
If someone is βfavouringβ a limb, itβs because theyβre hesitant to place weight on that limb.
Okay normally I'm on the side of "words mean whatever we need them to mean".
but guys, I donβt like the suggestion that itβs what is happening here. Being unfamiliar with the term, and guessing its meaning based on vibes, doesnβt mean you have equal authority on whether itβs βcorrectβ with the community who actively use this word in a technical sense.
please do consider that if you haven't been exposed to the word in the context it's used in, "both are correct" and "you can interpret it differently" and βthere is no right or wrong answerβ and βit feels like it SHOULD be Xβ cannot be a fully realised take. Sure, linguistics recognises there are rules in which meaning changes - but βlaypeople being unfamiliar with the word, and liking vibes betterβ isnβt one of them.
You can do that with most words, especially slang, and shape them to the needs of the majority, but this isn't like... a fanfiction word, invented for fanfic and, like, solely used for injured hockey players where it doesnβt matter if the injured limb swaps sides 4 times in a sex scene and phases through a stomach. It is, in its context, a bit more load-bearing (ha) than that.
It's fine to be unfamiliar with the context, and it's fine for words to change, but do just take a quick second to hear it in a native sentence!
One of the most common ways of using this word is to assess four-legged animals. "Favouring" is a specific grouping of behaviour - a hesitancy in gait, stiffness, reluctance to put weight on a limb. Itβs often inconsistent, as the animal tries to compensate or conceal the pain. It may not be a full limp or obvious lameness, since prey animals especially will actively try to conceal this; favouring is a subtle reluctance, and a useful word for a very specific recognisable behaviour that the animal is usually trying to lie about. (Thatβs probably why itβs used in romance fiction, as itβs an interestingly romantic and stoic way to react to pain, and doesnβt mean the limb is inconveniently disabled. A fictional character favouring a wounded leg can wince attractively when itβs jostled, but it doesnβt matter too much if the author forgets and has them run to the door suddenly - βfavouringβ isnβt incompatible with βrunningβ in horses either.)
The sentence βFavouring the off hindβ is equestrian jargon: it means βpain behaviour on the back right leg.β It does not mean βopposite-pain in the not-on deerβ and is not confusing in its professional register.
If you've only vaguely heard of "myeloma", and most people in a poll are guessing it's a skin cancer, that doesn't mean that myeloma and melanoma can now readily collapse into the same word - they're under active use in their native contexts, where the people frequently using them do need to communicate the difference between skin and blood cancer.
A poll of laypeople misunderstanding βmyeloma,β or non-horse-people misunderstanding βfavouring,β isnβt quite enough to indicate a full semantic shift and change of meaning of the term. The community that uses the term βfavouringβ in the context of βlimb injuryβ - vets, farriers, farmers, commentators, equestrians - knows what it means and uses it consistently in the same way. Theyβre not confused. because to them, it isnβt a vibesy, sex-scene-hand waving word. Itβs a cluster of pain signals.
If you arenβt familiar with that usage, then thatβs really more about your own lack of familiarity. Not all interpretations DO carry equal authority, especially when one is just confusion/unfamiliarity. You just havenβt met it before, and thatβs fine.
Tl;dr: Iβm all for words changing meanings, but we shouldnβt be too quick to declare that when itβs based entirely on unfamiliarity and vibes-based readings.
