Went to the roman baths in Bath recently and there was a collection of these kinds of stones on display. The stones had likely fallen out of their ring settings and gotten trapped in drains. They thought that people would keep their rings on while bathing and the hot water would loosen the vegetable based adhesive holding the stones in place.
