Franck - Prelude, Fugue, et Variation, op.18
This piece was originally for organ, part of a series of six pieces that were meant to explore the different colors and sounds possible with new French technical innovation and organ engineering. While the music has a delicious neo-Baroque atmosphere, the prelude is especially gorgeous on piano. I can’t help but think of an English country house at the turn of the century, there’s fog outside, deer on the lawn. The prelude is built out of a melody in the shape of a wave, a melancholic mode that rises and falls through different keys, until a chordal transition brings us into the fugue built out of a long and complicated subject, though the texture is comparatively thin, slowly building to a heavy climax. The mood is still darker, somber, and then comes the variation, which is a restatement of the prelude but with more elaboration and ornamentation. Like many of Franck’s minor key works, it ends on a high note, redemption and peace.

Bam Adebayo - from Kentucky to Miami Heat

Some more explaining...
My father was born in Lexington, Kentucky. The thing about being from Lexington is that you have two loves in the sporting world; Kentucky basketball and the Kentucky Derby. The basketball team was coached for many years by the legendary Adolph Rupp (for whom the arena is now named). The year my father was born, as well as the year I was born, and the year I graduated high school, Kentucky won the national championship. And they won a few others.
Unfortunately, for us UK fans, the two most well-known events in our history had us on the losing side; the famous Texas Western (white vs. black) game in 1966, and the last-second shot by Christian Laettner in 1992. Of course, the lasting results of these two games were the progression of integration in all places (including the UK basketball program) and the lasting hate of Christian Laettner and Duke basketball ;P
In recent years I have been following Kentucky a lot more closely than I used to. Coach John Calipari has built a strong system that keeps his team competitive and also prepares players for the next level. I know not everyone agrees with his methods and philosophy, and I myself do not care for the NBA much at all. But beneath the LeBron-Curry upper crust of the league, there have been many recent successful players that were drafted from UK (they achieved academic success while in school, but now can realize their dream of professional success). I must say it is nice to actually root for a team in the tournament rather than have to rely on bracketology for my thrills ;)
The tough thing about the Kentucky system as a fan is that you have to learn about a bunch of new players every year. So, farewell and best wishes to Fox, Monk and Bam (and especially to Briscoe and Humphries and any others who were not drafted) and now I have to see who these new guys are!
i feel personally offended

It’s what you do with those problems that defines you.
#tbt the time my name was spelled out on the ‘field’
I have been associated with the Herndon High School band since the year 2000, when I did my student teaching there. I have been honored to be a part of numerous performances in collegiate (Villanova, James Madison, Towson, Rutgers) and NFL (Ravens, Giants, Falcons) stadiums, the Cherry Blossom Parade, Disney World, Universal Studios Orlando, etc.
I am really looking forward to working with the band again this fall. We will be performing in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving parade.
Shout out to those of you who follow me that were Herndon band kids!
Allow myself to re-introduce...myself...
I am a musician (horn player) and a teacher... I taught mostly band but also strings for 13 years... then (long story short) I left my job, did some soul-searching, and worked my way back to prove to myself that I was really doing what I was meant to do... in a twist to my path, I was asked to substitute for a great strings teacher while she had heart surgery. Proving to myself (and others) that I could do this, I was hired full-time this year and had the opportunity to work at two wonderful schools as the lead strings teacher, and help out at another school.
This was the best year ever and there was rarely a time when I felt unsupported or unappreciated. I made a few mistakes, but I worked to move on and improve upon what I did (rather than let everything accumulate and weigh me down).
So being back in full-time work means that I have not posted a lot on tumblr. Summer is here, though, and maybe that will change ;)
About the picture: we have a great program that offers rental instruments to those who might not be able to afford a store rental. We send in orders and then have to pick them up at the warehouse... then bring them back at the end of the year. So that’s what this is; the kids lined up the violins and violas and then I brought my car around to load. One of the kids thought it was hilarious that the instruments were lined up next to the “Kiss and Ride” sign...
We hope you’re enjoying the first day of summer, US Trainers!
Nintendo is Developing a Legend of Zelda Smartphone Game
According to Takashi Mochizuki of the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is in the process of developing a Legend of Zelda game for smartphones that will come after the release of the Animal Crossing mobile game. Animal Crossing is scheduled to be released towards the end of 2017, so the Zelda mobile game is likely to release in early 2018. The nature of the game and its pricing structure are still unknown.

Shostakovich - Prelude and Fugue no.7 in A Major
It’s been rainy and dreary all day. I’ve been lazing around watching Netflix, being a generic lump under the blankets. I opened youtube and this fugue was recommended to me. Mini tragic story: months ago my computer died and I lost everything. I’d lost my ENTIRE music collection. I spent the next few months uploading tracks off of CDs in my house, and then going back and fourth to my local library that I’d used to build a collection back in high school, and I’ve been trying to buy back whatever the library no longer had. One major loss was the complete collection of Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues, performed by Keith Jarrett. It’s on my wishlist, but I haven’t felt compelled to get it back immediately. Now, listening to the beautiful crystalline mood of the fugue, I realized that I’d forgotten how much life was in the set, how much music I’m missing out on. This recording is of Shostakovich himself, and if you’ve heard Shostakovich play before you won’t be surprised at the hyper-speed he plays at…as if he is taking in coffee through an IV. Either way, here is a breathtaking performance of an underrated work. Enjoy!
Coincidence that I got out my recording of the Preludes and Fugues during the rainy days we had last week... this music embraces the damp, melancholy, atmosphere of a rainy day. Wow Shostakovich does play this fast... #7 Fugue is my absolute favorite but I’m used to it at about half speed!
