This is genuine stress is a silent killer please decompress in whatever way suits you
I’m back because just saying “be less stressed” obviously does nothing so here are my suggestions: I think it’s rlly psychologically important to find hobbies/activities that you can get completely lost in.Here is some of what I’ve done to force my brain to factory reset when I can feel the cortisol chipping away at my nerves:
Write shitty poetry, followed by a dramatic reading for my cat
Dancing (with my cat)
Writing slightly less shitty prose/fanfic
Painting!!! Whatever you want,, don’t worry abt quality worry about how fun it is to get paint literally everywhere
Rewatching the same show/movie I was really obsessed with years ago bc the nostalgia mixes with dopamine to create a super-drug (and it’s all natural, baby)
Writing letters!! And sending them! It’s fun!
Cleaning my room (it helps I swear) (bonus points for records or loud music,,, combine with dancing)
Trying (and mostly failing) to cook something simple
Obviously find your own things,,, and don’t stress about stress. You’re doing ur best bestie
This is genuine stress is a silent killer please decompress in whatever way suits you
I genuinely have this fear while I’m writing that someone will see an em-dash or a corny metaphor (cos I’m not that talented y’all some of my metaphors or whatever suck) and think I’m AI. And it’s like hey!!! It’s shit and it’s mine, baby, I swear I’ve never used a bot.
But also I understand the urge to suspect everything, bc everyday I log into Substack and I’m like “this is the most obvious AI word salad I’ve ever seen!” And I have no proof!!! So I try to look past it but it genuinely hinders my ability to enjoy a piece. I just don’t know. It’s scary times we’re living in, it’s hard times to be a creative or an enjoyer of creative things.
The Ministry of Time, by Kaliane Bradley (review)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Keywords: time travel, historical (??), romance (??), science fiction
I was genuinely so disappointed in this book: I wanted to like it, it sounded so much like something I'd love. Time travel, charming romance, intrigue!! Spy thriller! But it was barely any of these. The time travel was cool, but underutilized until the last 10% of the book. The romance was so unconvincing/flat that I genuinely ended up wishing the two Love Interests would end up with other people, because the chemistry in other relationships was SO MUCH better. The intriguing/exciting spy things were few and far between.
My main gripe: the MC (unnamed) was an obvious author self-insert, and she was genuinely one of the most unlikeable/detestable characters I've ever forced myself to read. She had very little agency, she was flat, she only cared about her crush which meant the plot dragged at a snail's pace because she was so uncurious about anything strange happening around her (lots of "huh, that's odd. I'll worry abut that later tho :) Graham is so hot"). She did very little, she just let the story happen around her, rarely commenting on it unless it had to do with Graham. At the end she finally starts to do shit, and even then she's just dragged through the motions by other, more interesting characters. She was so so unimportant to this book as a whole. She genuinely could be removed and very little would change. I wish she was removed. I have no idea why someone would think this was a good character.
More thoughts (positive!!) below the cut:

The past few weeks I’ve been stuck in the worst writing pit of despair of my life,,,,,, and my usual “get out of writers block” tricks are not working (reading more for inspo, creativity soundtracks, pivoting to a different project altogether until I get my flow back). Idk if it’s my chronic exhaustion or just a lack of inspiration, but if anyone has any tips to make writing happen (and how to make that writing feel alive again) please help me,,, I’m desperate.
Me, reading a novel-length slow burn fanfic: God I wish they’d just get together already 😭
Me, writing a novel-length slow burn fanfic: I’ll have them kiss for the first time in the second to last chapter. Any sooner would be rushing it
Project Hail Mary moment (I still haven’t seen the movie 😔)
I love the enormity of space, the enormity of what they were doing ,,, I love the enormity of this quote,,, how it’s true even with all the context. I love how it parallels how Stratt, even as she was forcing Grace to go on this mission, told Grace she believed he was a good person. I love that when Grace got up there, with no idea who he was, he was fascinated by the universe surrounding him, how he loved it.
I’m not the best painter, and painting space is hard, but it really is my favorite thing to make art of. I think if I do another one, I wanna use a bigger canvas so I can make the person (and the stars) even smaller (I have big shaky hands).
The science pet, always come in handy.
“Do you really think I needed a middle school science teacher?” (In the book) Yes girl I think you did lol
god this is dumb (original)
EDIT: hey guys please reblog this version source has been updated!

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (book review)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Key words: sci-fi, non-linear storytelling, problem-solving, the power of friendship, and a whole lotta hope
I'll be honest: I was influenced by Tumblr to read this book. The movie is really popular right now, but I don't have access to the movie,,,, I wanted to be able to understand the conversations happening.
I've never been so pleased to read something because it was popular. (Usually I'm immensely disappointed)
This book was what I needed in my life right now, especially after a few months of less than stellar/unfulfilling reads. It delighted me with every page, and the entire process of reading it was just so filled with joy and excitement it got me passionate about reading again.
I'm a science fiction fan, but I haven't really read a lot of books that were more hard-science/focused on the actual scientific method. But the science was actually my favorite part of this book!!! It got me excited!!! I felt all the ups and downs, the triumphs and tribulations!!! I literally couldn't set the book down (and I actually read a lot of it by sneaking away at work...)
It got me excited about science in a way I haven't been since before college; it reminded me of the creativity and enthusiasm possible when I really care about my craft.
To me, the biggest takeaway was hope. It feels like we're all lacking that right now, I am at least. But this brought me a lot of joy, and hope. It was like a warm hand on my shoulder, telling me everything will be okay. Telling me I've got this, that I can handle everything life is trying to throw at me. (And also connection, love, etc. because the solution is often found with the power of friendship and i cried)
Anyway... I feel like I could go on and on about the characters and more specific things... but there's probably a lot smarter people on here saying it all already. So here's quotes! I actually had a hard time picking them, because I had lots of things marked in this book!!! (spoiler warning!!! Lots of spoilers)
I recently downloaded Substack because a friend thought it would be fun to send each other articles back and forth (and it is!) But also,,, there is something about it that makes me think: some people are so eager to yuck other people's yum. I'm going from really lovely newsletters about how people are reintroducing joy and whimsey into their lives, or think-pieces engaging with the ozempic crisis that I felt genuinely emotionally struck by, and even essays that challenged me and expanded my worldview in really interesting ways.
And then I scroll to the next article, and it's telling people that "actually, bag charms are tacky and if you like them you're disrespecting designers" and "Harry Styles is awful because he is Harry Styles" and "I'm about to gate-keep being queer for the 1,000,000th time as if we haven't already deconstructed that argument enough" or "I'm more intellectual than those people and here's why"
It's such whiplash. I'm not super online, so maybe I'm just not used to the negativity/discourse. I like tumblr for the fandoms and writing and art, and I like engaging with Substack (in short doses, because SO MUCH of it feels like ragebait) because people have really cool stuff to say sometimes!
But also: why are you so obsessed with writing something solely for the purpose of bringing others down? Why do you feel the need to show how much woker/cooler/smarter you are than everyone else? Why can't you engage with the world critically, but still with positivity and love? Is life not hard enough? Is the world not hostile and cruel enough for you? Do you truly, deeply believe, down in the deepest recesses of your heart, that you're so objectively correct in your worldview you couldn't possibly consider that others have merit?
Engage critically with things in media and culture, critique stuff you think is harmful. But also, acknowledge that you are one person. Acknowledge that you're not always right. Acknowledge that you may have a superiority complex that doesn't come from a place of high self esteem, but actually reflects dark depths of envy and fear you can't seem to escape.
I don't know if I said this clearly enough, but I have lots of thoughts about the platform as a whole. Just be open, be kind. Why is it so hard to be kind?
What I've been reading lately
I fell behind on my book recaps, spring semester tried to kill me. But I've got a fun summary here of the last few books I've read!
Note: All of these were for my Queer Lit class. I think being for class or not genuinely effects how much someone enjoys/doesn't enjoy a book, so keep that in mind!
Playing RE2 remake and remembering how small a good survival horror makes your world. Leon S. Kennedy cracking his journal and writing in glitter pen "Dear Diary, today I hope to make it to the next hallway over. It's going to be tough leaving behind my room #MyRoom."
I love survival horror UGH Leon is really THE character of all time
