Years ago back when I worked in cubicle land, we were hiring junior software developers. They didnāt have to have a ton of experience, just a willingness to learn, and some demonstration of their software skills. Like: show me a program you wrote (any language) or a web site you designed. Anything.
And there was this one guy I talked with who seemed super sharp, but had virtually zero experience writing software. When it came time to do the show-n-tell part of the interview he whips out his laptop, brings up a website, and spins it around to show me what he made.
A website of tiny ceramic frogs.
Not for sale. Just⦠all these ceramic frogs, organized into categories. Frogs on bicycles, frogs with hats, frogs sitting on lily pads. It was a virtual museum of ceramic frogs in web form.
I scrolled through his online collection of frogs, slightly baffled.
āThis is your website?ā I asked finally.
āYep!ā
āYou coded this yourself?ā I popped into view-source mode and poked around some incredibly well-formatted, well-commented html. I nodded slowly. This guy was meticulous.
āYep!ā
āSo⦠whereād all the frogs come from?ā
āI made those too,ā he says, beaming.Ā
And while Iām processing this he rummages in his bag and pulls out a little ceramic frog working at a computer terminal. He places it on the table before us, next to the laptop.
āAnd THIS one,ā he says,Ā āI made for you! As a thank you for the interview.ā
It was adorable. I hired him on the spot. I mean, why not? Worst case heād wash out in 90 days and weād hire somebody else. He turned out to be one of the best developers on our team.Ā
And yes, his cubicle was loaded with ceramic frogs.
And you know what? Even if the guy with all the money should change his heart *right this minute* and donate billions to a cause as good as world hunger:
...Nonetheless, whether he does or not... he will still die, like all the rest of us, regardless of who may be at his bedside, alone in his head: alone. By himself. No one there to mitigate the pain, to be telling him how important he is, to make what's happening okay in any way whatsoever. He will cross the bar alone. And there is nothing he can do to stop it.
Nothing he can do with the science we have in this day and age will change that. Nothing invented in the next twenty, thirty, *fifty* years, will change that.
Is he a schmuck? Yes. Is he vastly wealthy and powerful (in the in-this-life mode) beyond the dreams of almost all of us? Yeah, sure!
Will it avail him at the moment when, eventually, beyond any ability of his or those he's paid to keep it running, his breath stops? NOPE.
...The comfort associated with this may be a bit on the chilly side. But (leaving aside folks' personal beliefs about what happens on the far side of the Last Breath) all his personal bullshit in the physical world will swiftly come to nothing.
Let's wait our time. I may not see it: but some of you will, and will be able to say, "Well THAT's over, finally."
(sigh)
Okay, that's my annoyance for the day. ...And now who wants some tea?

Every time you go in a public place and something ISNāT disgusting itās because somebody cleaned it. Every time you feel comfortable using a public bathroom or sitting at a restaurant table or setting something on a gas station counter or playing on a playground itās because somebody cleaned it.
Thank you to everyone who cleans the world, especially those who are underpaid and under appreciated.
Don't leave your friends and even acquaintances to go to the hospital alone. If they don't have someone already going with them and don't explicitly tell you they don't want you there, go to advocate for them. Outcomes for sick people change dramatically when they have someone else there to observe doctors (making them know they can't get away with negligence) and note symptoms from an outside perspective.
Going to the hospital is scary and even someone totally unprepared to be a medical advocate or physical support will be better than nothing, purely from their presence. You can grab food, be there with your phone to search if theirs dies, go in search of a doctor, distract them from pain or discomfort... go with them.
We agreed we all change. Better or worse, we change together.

Google quietly added generative AI capabilities to Google Earth, allowing anyone to generate false images on top of real satellite imagery. It seems pretty rudimentary, but the potential for disinformation is sky-high.
Anyway, did y'all hear that they nuked the White House?
Within the first few hours of its discovery, people on Twitter used this tool to generate an Epstein Island attraction at Disneyland, a mega-prison within Googleās headquarters, and a sequel to 9/11.
Google has already announced that they will be ārolling backā this feature because of screenshots like these:
The fact that they want to bring it back with āguardrailsā is ridiculous. Screenshots like these are not the work of some malign actors, theyāre instant proof that your idea is terrible on its face
Everyone go look up the song nasa banned from space
Don't forget to play it loud as fuck
pleaseā¦.listen to the whole thing. And imagine that you are IN SPACE in 1973 and you JUST woke up. Every time you adjustā¦it escalates somehow.
This song had to be designed in a lab for the sole purpose of fucking with astronauts. whoever added it to the NASA playlist was a genius.
It took them two tries to ban it?

Drug arrives years after pandemicās peak, but could still offer protection to vulnerable populations.
An antiviral pill has, for the first time, been shown to prevent COVID-19 in people exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus at home, according to trial results published today in theĀ New England Journal of Medicine1. The drug could be a lifeline for those who still face real danger from the virus, such as care-home residents or transplant recipients on immune-suppressing medication.
There are good things happening in the world.
You can read about it here without a paywall.
Households exposed to COVID-19 now have an oral drug specifically cleared to prevent infection after contact with a sick person. The FDA listed Xocova, the brand name for ensitrelvir, as a 2026 novel drug approval for post-exposure prophylaxis of COVID-19 following contact with an infected individual. The decision fills a gap that has persisted since the pandemicās early years: until now, no oral antiviral carried an FDA-approved indication for prevention rather than treatment.
The bubble is nigh.
