The Fox Project - Part II.
Here we are 4 weeks after the unburied post... what happened under a month?
4 weeks ago, I washed the skull, then put it into dishwasher water, and my aquarium heater and the degreasing project started. And first, it didn't happen a lot. But after 2 weeks, the good stuff started to leak out of the skull.
A TON of stuff.

When to unbury a carcass? (If it was buried in the fall?) /The Fox Project/
My first fresh, whole body rot down carcass experience is now collected.
At the beginning of this fall, I received a call from a friend who said he had run into a fresh fox carcass while dog walking in the forest. I wanted an adult fox for a long while now - I have a juvenile one, but not an adult. And from an artistic standpoint foxes are very interesting, because on the outside they look like they have a wolf-like skull, but nothing is farther from the truth, so this fox would be a very prized member of my reference collection.
Wanted to ask what kind of glue can I use to glue teeth to the skull, because they keep falling out and I'm scared of just using any glue
Superglue works perfectly! I advice to try the bones together beforehand, because superglue dries fast - if you mess it up, no worries, acetone dissolve superglue, so you can redo the gluing if needed.
Yesterday I had a very impromptu bone hunting while I was walking back home from my run and found these super lovely bones - with moss on them! Today I cleaned them all and even managed to preserve the moss :3 I am very happy with them and successfully identified the species:
the bottom jaw is probably a sheep
the skull is a dog
the scapula and vertebras are also from the dog
Will go back next week to look for more bones and maybe some more teeth of the dog.
Awww, I am so happy, these are my first nature-stained bones and they look so dope!!!
Bones FAQ
Welcome to my small FAQ section! Before diving into it, please note that I am not:
A taxidermist
A tanner
A Skeletal articulater
This blog is about my love for biology, anatomy and cleaning my art references for myself and my art projects. I am not a bone professor.
Where do you get your bones?
I collect nature find carcasses, these are usually road kills or predator's prey.
I do not support:
Poaching
Animal neglect/abuse
Personally not support buying feeder animals for bone harvesting (frozen rats and such)
Do you have any advice on how I can get my bones if I am not living in the woods?
Yes! You don't have to live in the woods to find bones! In this post, I get into details of where to look!
Any bone cleaning advice?
Definitely! Check out my #bone cleaning tag for my posts about bone-cleaning methods. I can wholeheartedly recommend the #tips and tricks section as well. These posts are based on my experiences and on my research for my own projects.
What do I need for the start?
gloves(!!!)
trash bags
bucket(s)
H2O2 aka hidrogen-peroxide
a designated pot
a knife (scalpel is the best, but handle it with caution!!!)
dish soap
You can start your vulture culture journey for pretty cheap. This starter package is for the more "time consuming" bone cleaning, because if you are not investing money into chemicals, then you will invest into your project with your time. Rotting and degreasing and whitening can take some time. if you collect carcasses like me, then the gloves are MUST! You cannot skip them. I see some people touching "wild bones" bare hand or even touching the rot pot material bare hand. NO! Never do that! Even if "these are just bones" and theoretically you cannot get anything from a bone, you can never know! I say it is better be safe than sorry, touchy-touchy bare-handed only when you are disinfected your bones. Or at least it when is not rotting.
If it rots, no bare-hand touch!
And definitely not touching the maceration water without gloves, NEVER-EVER! A small crack on your skin is enough to get blood infection, not worth to risk.

Cleaning Bones: The Cheap Burying Method
When I decided to jump into this skull-collecting hobby, I kind of made a roadmap for myself. Good thing it is simple! I just needed to:
Find bones.
Clean them.

When the degreasing doesn't work... (Bone cleaning)
I tried out a different dish soap to not use the pricier one we use at home and gave a shot to cheap dish soap and I am not satisfied I can tell you that. My rabbit skull sat 2 days in a highly concentrated cheap dish soap + water mixture (this is why my water basically looks like some kind of mandarin juice) and it did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to my bones. 2 days later the water was still crystal clear and my bones were laughing at me, like "You are way too weak compared to my powers, pheasant!"
(The cheap dish soap did nothing in heated water either.)
So back to the expensive dish soap and it did its job in less than 24 hours. Seems like I have to buy my own bottle of dish soap of the same brand to not use the one we do use for the household. I have several bones in progress right now, and they will eat the dish soap away in no time.
So if you can still see through your degreasing water while you know your bones are not clean yet, that dish soap is just shitty and not working well time to change brands.
Yo, bones are cool!
They are indeed, dear anon, they are :)
Bones in the Capital? (Bone hunting in the city.)
Collecting bones' first step is to find the bones - but not all of us live in the middle of a forest or close to it. I am one of those people, I live in my country's capital and I have zero forest/national park around me. If you are like me you don't have to give up on your bone collector dreams!
Apparently, there is a difference between dish soaps. In my country there is no real chance to put my hand on Dawn, so my first pick was Jar, which worked nicely but finding it a bit pricey, so I tried out a cheaper version and it did nothing to my bones. Still testing it, but even if it works it takes a serious amount of dish soap to make it do anything, so Jar is still my best bet.
Dish soap differences. Who would think?
Fresh look!
Yay, the blog starts to have the vibes and look I was after :3 Not like I had lots of ideas in the first place, but wanted something dark :D Good thing I painted several skull pieces way before I started to collect bones, so I have blog decoration :D

How to degrease bones? (With the easiest and cheapest method!)
Bone cleaning is quite a journey - and honestly degreasing is the part I find a tad confusing. Questions like: how long it will take? Does it work in cold water as well? Is it done? Is it doing anything at all?
Welcome to my Boney World!
Hello there! I am a new member of the vulture culture - but who am I? I am an animal artist and my vulture culture journey started with an accidental fox skull finding and the realization I can collect my own anatomy references. And ever since originally I wanted to be a biologist, I realized a whole new world is waiting for me - the world of biology, anatomy and art!
I collect, clean and show off ethically sourced bones - I look for road kills and predator kills, whatever I find outside. I am also living in a capital city and it is so interesting to see how many bones you can find even in big cities!
My main goal is to collect skulls because I use these bones as art references for my 2D art - and also I have limited space, I cannot display full skeletons sadly. Maybe, one day, but not today.
I am also a beginner on this journey and constantly learning new things and tricks, so I aim to share my experiences and join to the community :3
