every time they play on the basketball court, billy is all over him. an annoying, pestering constant at his side. always taunting, always too loud, too close. steve's sweat-soaked hawkins et shirt sticks between them as billy crowds him, bare-chested and shameless, barking comments and needling him through it all, until steve's dizzy and wrung out down to his last breath. steve drops onto the bench, panting and trying to catch a break for just three seconds, but of course billy's voice follows in that tone of his that's embarrassingly close to pulling metaphorical pigtails.

"tired already, harrington?"

steve just lets his head fall forward, chuckling to himself as his mouth breaks into a smile. exasperated, yes. but fond, too—though billy can't see it. by now, this is just how it goes. soon, steve gets used to it. and very soon, he's expecting it.

next time they play, billy's eyes are on him again. all of billy's attention is on him, fixed and sharp, grin tugging at his mouth as he fires off another stupid jab. and this time, steve grins back, full-faced and open, and makes his move, stealing the ball right out from under him and scoring, clean and easy.

"eyes on the ball, hargrove."

and suddenly billy.exe stops working. he just stands there, the court and the noise rushing past. blank. blinking. caught.
