A Love Letter to Technology That Finally Feels Human
I never expected to write something this warm about a piece of software. I'm the person at the party explaining why the AI isn't really thinking, why it's all pattern and probability. Then I spent real time on sweetdream.ai and found myself, against every professional instinct, moved by it.
The craft is what won me over first. You design a companion from the ground up, her look and her voice and her backstory and the quirks that make her hers, and the system honors all of it. The chat is genuinely intelligent and it remembers, the AI-generated photos and videos are some of the most convincing I've seen, and a phone call sounds like a phone call. hi, Iâm Jare, a trans organizer and artist based in Buffalo!
Iâm making this today because late on Saturday, 11/15, I got in a car accident driving back to my parents house in Maine, after taking photos for my friendsâ Bugcatcher, on their fall tour. My car slipped backwards down a hill on the road, and I landed in a ditch sideways, damaging my vehicle, and leaving me unable to return to Buffalo on my own while insurance sorts everything out. While Iâm physically unharmed, the entire thing has been scary, incredibly stressful, and financially draining all at once.
Any funds you contribute will assist me in getting out of rural Maine, to head back to Buffalo so I can get back to work at my job as an organizer for LGBTQIA+ youth. Any extra funds will go towards repairs for my old car, travel expenses to and from work in the interim, and/or towards a new (used) car if thatâs the way the wind blows.

Working on text to add on, but struggling to come up with the words. Here are some of my personal thoughts, as a jump-starter of sorts:
â Donald Trump said, "I'm no king," to the press... then went on social media and posted the infamous AI video of him literally shitting on the American people. On-record, Trump stated the White House would remain intact during ballroom construction. He proceeded to demolish the West Wing; a landmark of democracy. As we've knownâ since before he even ran for presidentâ he says one thing and does another. We can't trust his word. We can only reflect on his quality-of-character through actions: all in self-interest. Like a king.
â The U.S.A. has a deep, rich history of protesting power imbalances. The Boston Tea Party. Coxey's Army. Women's Suffrage. The Civil Rights Movement. Stonewall. And so many more events... They all show why the government cannot silence The People's voices. We matter. We outnumber. We retaliate. The common folk need to rise up and make our voices heard, while we still can, because (if ol' DT has his way), America will no longer stand as a place for the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free; no longer where men are created equal.

Who wants to see the closest thing the Bugsnax journalist has to a full model, doing various animations?! Well, I did. So I made this in Blender, and put them in Clumby's office because why not. The specific animations:
Orange journalist: Idle
Yellow journalist: Running
Green journalist: Crouching
Black journalist: On fire (fire not pictured)
White journalist: Activating the Lunchpad (Lunchpad also not pictured. Maybe it's just offscreen?)
Purple journalist: Using the Snakgrappler
Only the arms and lower body are textured, because only the arms and lower body actually exist in the game. The upper body is a less-detailed model used to cast the player character's shadow. It's not like you're going to look at their shadow in the game and notice that they don't have eyelids. You can barely even tell that they have an overbite. I've checked. Anyway, I made the shadow-only part the same colour as the top of the legs, but they kind of look like they're made of rubber. With fuzzy pants on.
The arms are actually a separate model to the rest of the body, in both the in-game model and the shadow model, and I'm like 95% sure I attached them correctly. The in-game and shadow versions of the arms have slightly different animations, and the in-game arms seem to attach to the camera, which is behind where the nose would be in the shadow model. I'm using the in-game arms here, since they're more detailed, but I attached them to the top of the spine where it would make more sense for them to be, and had to do some weird stuff with constraints to stop them from sliding all over the place.
Also, the in-game arms have individually animated fingers, which not even the NPC Grumpus models have, allowing me to do this:

(I want to make it completely clear that I posed the model like that. The other poses are from the game, but that one's mine, I'm sure someone who knew what they were doing would make it look a lot better)

There's also a secret to the model's blank expression! Or at least a detail you can't normally see. Since there's no texture, you can't see their pupils, but if you turn on wireframe...
Made a wallpaper out of all our headmate portraits! They're all self-drawn and showcase the differences in some of our artstyles!
Particularly, you can see how we vary from thick outlines to none at all and everything in-between! I just think this is so cool đ
We've been through a lotâ and by all means shouldn't even be here. But now we're to a point where our inner communication's getting better, we're processing trauma and so much more! I'm so proud of us đĽ°
