Rambling about the livestream. Dan owes us nothing
Perplexed really. How millions of viewers can be the victim here? I don’t feel he was blaming really. He referenced how there were different ways people took the video and didn’t seem pissed at all really that some people focussed on that. He also seemed equally chuffed that people mainly took so much from it.
Why are we so obsessed with labels though? I’m queer and 25 and I take each relationship with the next person, regardless of their gender, as it comes. I loosely apply the bi label to myself only to explain my sexuality to others who I can’t quite articulate to that love for me as an emotion is blind to gender (read: older members of my family). But that’s the point isn’t it? It makes me uncomfortable when I have to do that. It feels icky and wrong not because I’m ashamed of it because there is a lot more to it than that. As an incredibly introspective person who has spent more time than I can measure contemplating my sexuality, I shouldn’t have to explain it to anyone.
I feel like as a phandom we are being that overbearing and inquisitive mother who just can’t get her head around it. “What does it mean?”, “Are you gay now?”, “Do you prefer men or women?” “Oh so if you’re bi/gay/queer/insertlabelhere you must be in love with your best friend...”. If any of you have ever had a person like that in your life- you know it is exhausting and draining and actaully pretty horrid. The shipping part of the fandom are this way ALL THE FUCKING TIME anyway and now we’re actually ANGRY at him?
Imagine someone treating you this way though. Yeah I’m sure DnP never even read most of our comments or whatever but when they do scroll through the comment section it must annoy them. The reason why we know nothing about their romantic lives- whether they are together or they have other partners- is because of the phandom. That kinda makes me ashamed.
He’s not being vindictive or misleading. He’s living his truth. Maybe living his truth is not allowing us to push him into sharing something explicitly. It’s only a big deal to most of us because we ship them- like come on guys let’s not confuse that with genuine concern to ensure he feels he can come out to us and be comfortable. I’m sure the important people in his personal life know all they need to know. I just ugh can’t explain how disconcerting it is to log in and find people mad at Dan for this. Really. Back off.
My main way of looking at it- we’re privileged we get such swift access to live interactive director’s commentary. Let’s not over analyse and rip his every facial tic and imagined ulterior motive apart. It could put him off of sharing with us. Please.
I know we all mean well and we love them both to bits but I’m feeling really uncomfortable with how as a group of fans we can come across as fairly petulant and entitled.
