- cats can be very particular about how theyre pet. if a cat has ever “randomly freaked out on you,” chances are you were petting her wrong. cats prefer to have some amount of personal space, so before you pet a cat, especially an unfamiliar cat, hold your hand out and let the cat sniff you. if she wants to be pet, she’ll rub her face against your hand and show you how she likes to be pet.

- most cats prefer to be pet on the head. at the base of the ears and under the chin are major sweet spots, but if your cat has a preference, chances are he’ll just show you. also, cats can become overstimulated easily, so full-body pets are usually best kept to a minimum. keep an eye on your cat’s body language and know when to leave him alone.

- cats love to play. cats mostly entertain themselves but they actually have a lot of energy and can be very playful! i’ve also noticed that my cat hasnt been doing some of his more annoying habits since i’ve been making sure to get him some playtime every day.

- when a cat rolls on her back and shows you her cute fluffy belly, she’s not asking for pets. she’s asking to play! and if you immediately put your hands on that adorable ball of fluff, chances are she’ll pounce on you and scratch the shit out of your arm. but it’s not (always) cause she’s mad! cats love to play-fight, just like a lot of other animals!

- cats are mostly nonverbal. adult cats naturally don’t meow, like, ever. but a lot of adult cats have noticed that humans communicate verbally and adapted accordingly. and because of that, cats in a particular household will usually have their own meows that mean something specific. like, your ct goes “mrow” when he wants food, and “mew” when he wants out
