i really don't have the words for how things have escalated to outright race riots in the last few weeks. just to collect a few of the stories the bbc is reporting in their live thread:

Families led to safety through flames (Dan Johnson) Homes were targeted and burned. Families had to be led to safety through the flames - rescued by emergency services risking their lives in the most dangerous situation. It’s what the authorities feared all day. What they warned against and pleaded not to see. The condemnation came quickly and was widespread. It wasn’t just homes, cars were also torched by young masked man in these predominantly unionist streets but the target here was immigrants and the message to entirely innocent families was: "You’re not welcome". In the north of the city, more people were forced to flee including an African family who’ve lived here for 20 years.

People being put out 'because they're black' - pastor A pastor who has been helping those in houses targeted in tonight's violence says people were being put out of their homes "because they're black". Pastor Jack McKee was at the scene where multiple houses were on fire around the Crumlin Road in north Belfast - he says some members of his church "who have been with us for 20 years" were "getting put out of their home, had their house attacked, windows smashed, houses beside them burned". "They're good Christian people and they're getting put out just because they're black," he says. "I'm doing my best to help them, it's as simple as that." [...]

Masked men shouting 'foreigners out' (Kelly Bonner) Last night on the Lower Newtownards Road in Belfast hundreds of masked men walked down the street carrying bottles, bricks and masonry. They set bins on fire and shouted "foreigners out". As they walked street to street, they were banging on doors, kicking doors down and breaking windows. Masked man set cars alight and at one point I witnessed them trying to burn a car until a woman came out of her home and told them it belonged to a "local and not a foreigner" and they stopped. A young family had to be moved from their home by police. The scenes of this young family fleeing their home were really quite shocking.

hi hi! re: "without eggs," i do usually use some mayo in my potato salad -- if it's just a preference for no like boiled eggs then you're good there, if it's an allergy or similar i would either use an egg free mayo or sub a couple tbsp of olive oil (won't be precisely the same but will still be tasty) and a little extra greek yogurt, maybe also more vinegar and mustard to account for the taste (mayo has both of these). anyways these measures are approximations bc i just eyeball, but:

~2 pounds of golden potatoes, chopped into bite size pieces and boiled in well salted water. you want to be very sure not to overcook these so they retain a nice shape, keep an eye on them and once they're cooked enough to hold their shape but still be tender to the tooth pull them from the heat, toss them in a colander and run cold water over them to stop them cooking

1/2 cup mayo (homemade is very nice but any you like will do, i prefer hellman's or another not sweet one. kewpie clashes a little here imo)

1/2 cup full fat greek yogurt

1/3 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup chopped dill, with the stems

1/2 cup each finely chopped italian parsley and cilantro (you can skip these if you don't have/don't like/don't want it super super herby, do not skip the dill though)

1/4 cup finely chopped chives

3 cloves of garlic, microplaned (if you just want to dice or use a garlic press i would add another to account, the finer you process your garlic the stronger it tastes)

1-2 tbsp stone ground mustard

(Optional) 1-2 tbsp whole seed mustard (these are nice and generally mild, i like the texture they add a lot but they can be hard to find)

squeeze of fresh lemon (optional but nice)

2-3 kosher pickles of your choice, chopped coarsely (i like grillo's for this)

~1/4 cup cornichon pickles, chopped finely

Half of a red or sweet onion, diced finely (red will be stronger and pretty, sweet will be sweeter, both are nice so it's up to you)

2-3 celery stalks, diced (if you hate celery cucumber is a good sub here, the crunch is necessary imo)

salt and black pepper to taste (don't skimp on black pepper here it's very necessary)

As the fabric of Sudan's medical and other social infrastructures have been destroyed by war and genocide, displaced people are seeing a high risk of disease outbreaks amongst them. This is what Eman's village is currently going through, and her family has been one of many affected by dengue fever.
