Olympic National Parkâs rugged shoreline is rich with life. Invertebrates of countless shapes, sizes, colors and textures inhabit the tide pools along Washingtonâs coast. Pictured here is a starfish with Giant Green Anemones that opens its tentacles like flower petals in the tidal waters. Photo courtesy of Keith Ladzinski.
Tip for all my student readers: if youâre too lazy to use a bibliography creator like NoodleBib or RefWorks, let Google generate your bibliography entries for you. All you have to do is google the article/book title in Google Scholar, click âciteâ at the bottom of the search result, and copy either the MLA, APA, or Chicago cite into your word document.Â
Signal boost because omg how did I not know this in college?
Since registration is starting soon I figure this is ample time to remind the six people who look at my Tumblr that citing your sources is really important in college and that this will be your best friend forever.
If youâre in high school and want to go to college? Learn to source! Youâll be way ahead of the curve and itâs 100% more important than knowing what the hell a predicate nominative is.
I use http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/ to figure out how to cite for my papers, and itâs been quite useful for the three years Iâve been at this!
Kids these days have it so good

Scientists have created tattoos that change color to give you real-time data about your body
The future of tattoos could give you a life-saving warning when your blood sugar dips.
People get tattoos for decorative or commemorative reasons, but now teams at MIT Media Lab and Harvard Medical School have collaborated to give tattoos a new function: delivering real-time data about your body.
The researchers have created a tattoo ink that reacts to your bodyâs chemistry to change colors as your body changes. Read more (6/1/17)

Amazingly cool Keokuk geode! Some of the Keokuk geodes contain oil (bitumen), they are found in an area near Niota in Hancock County, Illinois. Â Research indicates that nearby oil deposits from Pennsylvanian-age rocks may somehow be linked to these interesting geodes. Â Oil is able to migrate quite readily through certain soils and rock, and the conditions at the oil geode location may indicate a favourable environment for oil to reach the surface as the host rock that contains the geodes at this location is also frequently covered with a slick of oil. Â NOTE OF CAUTION TO COLLECTORS: Â These geodes, while interesting, are very messy to not only mine but also to have or store in a collection. Â Make sure to store any collected geodes in a location that is free of dust and also that has a bottom that will not leak and can get dirty. Â The oil has a way of soaking through anything permeable over time.
No seeds were lost but the ability of the rock vault to provide failsafe protection against all disasters is now threatened by climate change
This is very concerning.Â

How âChameleonsâ change color
Many chameleons, and panther chameleons in particular, have the remarkable ability to exhibit complex and rapid colour changes during social interactions such as male contests or courtship. It is generally interpreted that these changes are due to dispersion/aggregation of pigment-containing organelles within dermal chromatophores.Â
But, combining microscopy, photometric videography and photonic band-gap modelling, we show that chameleons shift colour through active tuning of a lattice of guanine nanocrystals within a superficial thick layer of dermal iridophores. In addition, we show that a deeper population of iridophores with larger crystals reflects a substantial proportion of sunlight especially in the near-infrared range.
The organization of iridophores into two superposed layers constitutes an evolutionary novelty for chameleons, which allows some species to combine efficient camouflage with spectacular display, while potentially providing passive thermal protection. -src

Hey gang! I wanted to take the time to tell you all about an amazing fundraising effort that my coworker Mark is undertaking to support The Heroes Project, a fantastic organization that empowers our wounded vets through physical and emotional training. On May 21, 2017, Mark will be climbing Mount Baldy to raise awareness for this wonderful cause.
From Mark's fundraising page:
BENEFITING: The Heroes Project
EVENT: 2017 Climb For Heroes
EVENT DATE: MAY 21, 2017
THE STORY: THP is an organization that provides wounded veterans with a unique form of mental and physical rehabilitation. So far THP has funded the intense training and climbs of seven veterans, all who have lost legs in combat. Each veteran climbed one of the worldâs seven summits, the tallest mountain each continent has to offer. THP empowers those brave men and women who not only lost a part of their body but their identity. By helping one hero at a time we hope that we can show that not only are we forever grateful for their sacrifice but that they are not forgotten. I am so honored to be able to be involved in helping THP. Team THP is proving that anything is possible!
Please consider donating to the cause and showing your support for our wounded vets.
You can donate by clicking this link. Any dollar amount helps!
Thank you all in advance for your generosity!
If you look at the ingredients list and itâs a bunch of words you donât even know⌠neither does your body (x)
Just like if you break apples and grapefruit down into their chemical components, Iâm willing to bet that most people wouldnât recognize the âingredientsâ either. Itâs a bunch of words you donât even know:

Donât use these scare tactics - Chemicals arenât inherently bad. Literally everything is made up chemicals. Trust me, your body knows what niacin is. It knows how to digest fructose and calcium sulfate. Even if you only consume the most basic and ârealâ foods that are pulled directly off the vine, youâre still ingesting a series of chemical compounds that you probably canât pronounce. Thatâs okay.Â
thanks to drhoz for submitting!
âIf you canât pronounce it, itâs bad for youâ is literally the worst pseudo-scientific scaremongering bullshit tactic. I hate it so much.
Iâm pretty sure you can pronounce âarsenicâ, but that doesnât change the fact that arsenic is highly toxic. On the other hand, you couldnât pronounce âcycloadenosine monophosphateâ or ânicotine-amide-dinucleotide-phosphateâ, though both of them serve vital roles in human biochemistry and you would die if your body wouldnât produce them.
Cyanide: Easy to pronounce, very bad for you.
Eicosapentaenoic acid: Difficult to pronounce, very good for you.
Itâs more important to know what the chemicals are and why theyâre in there. Anti-intellectualism helps no one.
â James Kennedy, âChemophobiaâ is irrational, harmful â and hard to break
Iâm gonna keep reblogging this until my knuckles fall off.
This is especially hilarious because grapefruit is well known for being dangerous for some people because of how it can interact with certain medications. Do fruit loops do that?
âPoison is in everything, and no thing is without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy.â - Paracelsus
The Madagascar or Malagasy leaf-nosed snake is a medium-sized highly cryptic (camouflaged) arboreal species. It is endemic to Madagascar and found in deciduous dry forests and rainforests. There is considerable sexual dimorphism within the species; the males are dorsally brown and ventrally yellow with a long tapering snout, while the females are mottled grey with a flattened, leaf shaped snout.

There are more than three dozen species in the family Paradisaeidae, more commonly known as the birds of paradise. Most are distinguished by striking colors and bright plumage of yellow, blue, scarlet, and green. These colors distinguish them as some of the worldâs most dramatic and attractive birds. Males often sport vibrant feathered ruffs or amazingly elongated feathers, which are known as wires or streamers. Some species have enormous head plumes or other distinctive ornaments, such as breast shields or head fans.
Males put their bright colors and unusual ornaments to good use when they display for females. Their elaborate dances, poses, and other rituals accentuate their appearance and put on a phenomenal show for both female birds and any humans lucky enough to be in the vicinity. Such displays can last for hours, and in many species they consume a significant part of the maleâs time.

the alien like landscape of the ethiopian dallol hydrothermal field - a vast area of uplifted thick salt deposits affected by intense fumarolic activity - is famous for being the only known volcanic area bellow sea level and for being both the hottest place on the planet - with average annual temperatures well above 30 degrees celsius - and the most colourful, with its pools of a hot sulfuric acid brine and ferrous multicolored salt deposits.Â
