Ben Linusβ tunic appreciation post.

me: I should write
also me: let me play the scene in my head and fantasize about writing it instead
being a writer means there are times where you donβt write anything for a week or so, and then there are times where you write 10,000 words in one day

if you ever doubt that your ao3 comments matter or mean something: i have been struggling with my writing for 6 months straight, crying myself to sleep afraid that i will never be able to write again, that the thing i love most in the world has left me, that my writing is just gone
this morning i got this comment:
and after i stopped blubbering over it, i picked up my writing notebook, and re-read all my fic research, and opened up my document again for the first time in weeks without being afraid of it
you have no idea how much writers treasure every single comment we get. you have no idea how big an impact you can have. sometimes, just sometimes, your one "insignificant" comment changes everything
βIn their defense, Iβm not an easy person to trust.β
Sextape by Deftones started playing in my headphones pretty much at the exact moment I saw this post

I donβt know why but the mental picture of Ben Linus with Harold Finch on one shoulder and Leland Townsend on the other is sending me. Like picture the whole βgood angel, bad angelβ schtick (post-finale for him so he actually has to wrestle a bit with being the old murder-happy manipulator Ben). I dunno, man. LOST predates both PoI and Evil but this is still so funny to me.
god i wish ao3 had in-line comments sometimes that's like the only thing i miss about wattpad </3 when something crazy would happen and there would be like 7k comments all in despair... it really established a sense of community
We write for ourselves, but we post for others.
(this came out of a conversation in the comments on a previous post about an author threatening to stop updating a fic because of lack of engagement)
So thereβs this idea that fic writers should write for themselves and not care too much about stats or engagement,
and i totally get the sentiment behind that. if writing becomes entirely about stats and external validation, something important does get lost - creative freedom and joy, conviction in your own writing
but i also think:
βi write for myself, but i post for others.β
because posting fic is not only self-expression. itβs social. ao3 is called an archive, but emotionally it often functions as a community space.
people post for connection, for participation, for others to bear witness to their pain and trauma and grief,
and i donβt think most people are asking to be admired so much as acknowledged. thereβs something deeply human about wanting another person to encounter something that mattered to you and go:
βok, yeah, I see what you were trying to say. I see you.β
especially because fanfic is often people processing very real feelings through fictional characters at a safe distance, one step removed,
and then uploading that deeply personal thing into a shared archive and hoping somebody else might connect with it.
And i think thatβs why it hurts so much when you summon up the courage and post a fic into the void and you get nothing back,
and then itβs like,
does anyone see me? does anyone even care?
Non-spicy ways to show Intimacy
Intimacy isn't always just the spicy stuff! Here's a few ways to show it through your characters in a few, simple ways...
Kissing their S/O's hand, knuckles, wrist...bonus points for eye contact!
Speaking of which...eyes. Glances across the room, prolonged eye contact, staring at each other
Tending to the other's wounds/ injuries
Knowing the other's tiny habits
Reaching out to the other when in pain, trouble, ect
Whispering jokes to each other
Carefully wiping off a stain from their clothes or face
Taking care of each other when sick or hurt
Hand over the heart/ ear over the heart just to hear it beat
Pressing their thumb over the pulse point for the same thing
Tracing scars, tattoos, birth marks, freckles
Giving the other something tiny that means a lot, a picture, a shiny rock, a flower
In fantasy settings, helping the other put on/ take off armor...trusting the other to know where daggers, knives, poisons are hidden
Telling each other secrets/ thoughts they've told nobody before
Tucking back the other's hair
Putting a piece of jewelry on the other or letting them borrow clothes
Keeping each other warm in the cold
In cases with chronic illness, letting the other care for/ know symptoms
Brushing, braiding hair, applying skincare, etc.
Nightmare comfort
Wiping away tears
Proximity- sitting near each other, sticking close, standing beside each other while doing a task such as cooking, laundry, painting...
Sharing a book, sitting close enough to read it together
