The DOORS protagonist (Also known as the Tourist/Explorer/Visitor to the ETT fans) is one hell of a curious adventurer in-game. I donât mean that the game is designed to promote exploration, or that people who play DOORS love exploring. I mean that the character you play as is canonically shown to be a curious little fellow. Exploring is one of, if not their biggest goal.
I donât want to waste time explaining why, but itâs strongly hinted at with their ability to enter subfloors for No Good Reason, the upcoming Journal they write in, and their âdialogueâ with El Goblino.
However, this character only takes half of the focus in this post. Glitch is an entity inside the protagonistâs head, presumably a forgotten/failed project by the Architects.
Glitchâs main goal is simple. If anything, it seems to state it outright in one of its many death messages in its Visions:
Glitch wants out, but it seems tough in theory considering its existence is tethered to us in some way.
Glitchâs aspect of being fully intelligent, yet somewhat at the mercy of the protagonist is a very interesting aspect of the character that little pick up on. Whatâll it do if we just. like. donât wanna leave ??
Thatâs irrelevant, however. At least Glitch probably wouldnât have to worry about that, right?
So uh.
When you look at it, Glitch and the Visitor (the term I will use for the DOORS protagonist moving forward) are nearly perfect foils for each other. And I mean every aspect. Hell, Iâm literally only thinking about some of these as Iâm writing; this was originally only supposed to be about one way they contrast each other.
For starters, letâs look at the power imbalance. The Visitor has to deal with, oh, just a few dozen threats. They can only even fight back with either some lights, or a Crucifix made by else entirely.
Glitch, on the other hand? It stated it best:
âTHE ONE THAT MADE ME | DOESN'T REALIZE | MY POTENTIAL.â
Not only is Glitch (presumably) incredibly strong while youâre weak, but while the Visitor looks to the Architects for assistance, Glitch pushes past them, both in the sense that it doesnât really care about them and it might just even be more powerful.
And while weâre on the subject of Glitchâs power, letâs look at what it does with it: Creating content.
I made a post about how content creation is a surprisingly major theme in DOORS (find it yourself im lazy), but I didnât really cover on how Glitchâs role in it plays with the Visitorâs. Glitch is certainly a creator. Look at its visions and item skins.
However, its mind-altering abilities donât end there. Youâre able to get the following line from Glitch upon death in its visions:
âI KNOW THINGS ABOUT YOU | THAT EVEN YOU DON'T KNOWâ
So, cool. Glitch has knowledge on the Visitor that not even they themself have. Thereâs even more of a power imbalance.
However, I wouldnât say that fully. One of the visions, AKA the daily runs, paints a different story.
Call this a stretch, but if you look at the daily runs badges, they have titles like âLOW LATENCYâ and âPARALLEL PROCESSINGâ. Hell, one of them is just titled âMACHINE LEARNINGâ.
My point? The Visitorâs making bits of content for Glitch, too: Information on how to counter entities and navigate the floors.
The content in question even contrasts with what Glitch makes for us: Glitch messes with their head so we can hallucinate things, but the Visitor messes with the world so that Glitch can learn. Glitch knows things about us we donât know, and we know things about the world that it doesnât know.
And did I even mention that what they create for each other is crucial to their different goals? Glitch makes content for the Visitor to explore and collect, while Visitor gives Glitch information to make escaping easier.
Oh, and while weâre on the topic of their goals, thatâs actually the final nail in the coffin and the epiphany that made me create this post in the first place:
Glitchâs desires go against the Visitorâs.
Look at it this way. Glitch seems to want nothing more than to escape. Look at the quote I showed at the start of this post.
The Visitor, however, wants to explore as much as they can. Itâs in their nature.
How can you escape if thereâs so much left to look at? How can you keep looking if the exit will always be right there?
Itâs clear that they canât have both. If they canât, though⌠One of them will have to let everything they stand for wash away die.
Glitch might not be able to account for *everything*, and if so, man would that make for CINEMA.
