location: the masquerade ball
"I am afraid no elaborate attire will disguise your visage from my eyes; I shall never been parted from a picture of you toddling on uncertain legs, endeavouring to steal a plate of sweet breads." Ursula had taken charge of Avan's person with a strong sense of gravity; lacing her arm through his, she lead him on a tour of the grand assemblage. Such was her right, amongst the youth; she led not through perfect espionage like some, but through a wisened, fraternal power. Time had proven a benevolent advocate to the Stark --- his whole manner, from his appearance to the timber of his voice, wrought impressions in his favour. He had grown into what so many aspired to be; a person in possession of a pleasant character, which endowed his looks with a deeper mettle. "How have you found the whole affair --- for this gathering is a grand test of your role, is it not? The young wolf, to become a seasoned fixture amidst politics and intrigue."
though his footing has long since steadied, avan's thoughts wander precariously away - northward, to colder halls. the displacement of duty is a hard wrought task, made harder still by each night of finery and leisure at the king's behest. though he has carried on each conversation as faithfully as he must, in truth he has not managed anything beyond a manufactured ease. and yet, whether for the indignity of the anecdote or by virtue of the lady tully's familiar presence, the set of his shoulders softens as she speaks. a boyish grin steals across his face, lingers through his words. "convenient that i should forget that crime, my lady. though i suspect i earned a poor reward for it." he had always thought the tully matriarch a strong presence, and that has not changed through the years. his head cants toward her as he mulls over her words, an honest answer on his lips. "tiresome," another of those smiles, thoughtful now. "but less so in present company. there may be hope for the young wolf yet."
deep into the night of the masquerade, at the royal keep, where no invitation goes unanswered. @bareruin .
࿔ she waits for him. not with impatience, but irreverence, for it's a testament to her spirit, that which has never known peace. she lights candle after candle in worship of the seven, each flame a tinge brighter than the last, their light fashioned into something redolent of a crown upon her head. what you need to know of light and flame is that she does not worship them; they burn in reverence of her. if only she could swallow a flame, let it slide down her throat. would it hurt? would she like it? would it remind her of something? inamorata of every ill thought, a paramour, devoted only to exquisite torment. rhaella knew that he'd come. “ you shouldn't obey my father, yet you should do what he asks. ” think her not brutal, for all she wonders is whether he knows the difference between the two. she lends her mouth to fate: “ say what you have to say, avan. if you wish to be cruel, be cruel to me, i'll keep whatever you give inside of me. ”
he finds her alone in the sept, a living visage among painted griefs and mercies. avan knows enough of the seven to name each stone figure, the father for judgement, the mother for mercy, the warrior for strength, they watch him as he crosses below. among such foreign eyes only rhaella's are known, yet hers remain fixed on the flames. "you have kept too much of me already." the simpler words for such keeping have long since been abandoned, but the knowing remains. there is a ruinous thing in her which has found its likeness in him, and so he stops just beyond reach, hands clasped behind his back. "your father asks me to remain. and there are those who would see me take my leave." yet, bereft of dragon flame, the king has fashioned himself other leashes. the starks remain ever tangled in them, each duty pulled taut. he considers her words in silence, earthen gaze settling upon the candles before them, meager effigies of a fire she can no longer possess. then he reaches forward, presses one into darkness between his fingertips.
the lord has come not as a supplicant, yet some part of him awaits her judgement all the same. "would you have me call it obedience?"
@bareruin balacony, after maelor's speech
emmon stood with his arms folded across his chest. the midnight air swept across the balcony in bitter currents, sharp enough to sting his lungs. his mask rested limp in one hand, its purpose was spent. there was little use in pretending now. behind him, the masquerade endured, though its music had soured. the laughter that drifted through the open doors came strained and uncertain. he flexed his fingers against the creeping numbness. the cold settled deep into the old ache that lived beneath his knuckles, and he rubbed at his hand absently. he would have to delve into his willow bark supply.
his eyes flicked over to the sound of someone approaching, one he somehow recognised immediately. he shifted his focus toward her and a small smile played on his lips. “rowena.” he simply acknowledged. for a moment, he noticed the difference in their appearance. of all their siblings, rowena never failed to make an impression and this was no exception. how different siblings could be, the thought nearly made him laugh.
a slight pause lingered in the night air.
“did you know?” was all he said. it was obvious what he was talking about. maelor’s speech, it was all anyone would be talking about for a good while. he regarded her with a cold look, not one of apathy but of careful consideration. “you must of, when has anything ever escaped you.”
she needn't place ear to the ground to know he'd slip away before night's end. to hide in some quiet corner, no doubt, where expectation would ease. emmon never had shared her taste for indulgence, nor possessed the talent to feign it; duty alone could have kept him amongst dancers and drunkards for such an age, and she suspected even that patience had long since worn thin.
she welcomes the cool kiss of evening air against skin, parting readily with the last cloying vestiges of heat and perfume from the hall. one corner of her mouth curves as at the sight of him, this dour man, the lord of their house, her brother whose face she had not seen for half a year. how strange indeed that they should share blood. his greeting is met with a knowing glance, the slight purse of her lips evidence that their last conversation still lingers on her mind. nevertheless, she settles beside him, her eyes fluttering closed against the breeze. she looses a breath at his question, then her head lolls to the side. "who among us can claim to know the mind of a king, dear brother?" teasing is the lilt, evasive is her answer. their own house was well accounted for, and besides, it was she who had come to do the asking. "what news of your betrothed, the lady wylla?"
༻ ❁ ༺ open starter for ( 0 / 3 ) time & location: day 5 ; the masquerade ; the great hall
╰┈‣ the great hall paused, like a still from a painting by one of the old masters. it would make for a beautiful scene ⎻ glistening candlelights dyed the sea of decadent jewels and fine silk in gold amber ⎻ a magnificent sight no matter where you looked. yet, what captured eyes most was not the shine nor the vivid. no, the focal point of this piece would follow everyone's attention, centred upon the dais, to the pale white dragon and his lost queen. and like all masterpieces, there was more than meets the eye. for below the pulchritude lay something far more rotten. all eyes remained on king maelor as he returned to his seat ; the hall sucked of its breath until the music finally resumed and merriment followed. but even hidden behind masks and mirth, ahri could still see it in the stiff postures and sharp glances, hear it in the forced laughter and strained whispers ⎻ there was fear in the air. but it wasn't new. she felt the tension, palpable, from the moment she arrived in king's landing, and the king's decree felt like a long time coming even before then. “ oh, ” a sudden presence behind her snapped her from her musings, and she turned to meet the figure before they could collide. “ i shouldn't have stood in the middle of the path. my apologies, ” her voice soft and disarming, “ here, let me get you a new drink. ” she smiled from behind her mask, grabbing a new flute from a passing serving boy and replacing it with the old.
it was one of life's quieter pleasures, to bear witness to the moment another realized they were being observed. there came, first, the pause. most startled like a deer beneath the trees next, though it comes as a matter of little surprise that a tyrell should recover more gracefully. "forgive me, i was every bit as distracted," easy sincerity floods the mistruth, threaded where it doesn't belong. gracefully, rowena yields to movement, surrendering her empty flute without protest. "what fortunate timing," the blackwood muses at her glass, raising it first in toast, then to her lips. a measured sip follows, merely a sampling as she watches the movement around them. one had to admire the revelers. no measure of wine nor song would drown the decree meted out tonight, yet such valiant efforts toward celebration could not be overlooked.
"though, i should hate to think i have earned a reputation. this is the third time tonight someone has seen fit to rescue me from an empty cup."

the evening's announcement may have soured the wine on nobler tongues, but nymeria finds her own sweetened by the king's threats. hushed words make their rounds, whispered from the mouths of stags and lions, fish and fowl, the faint lift in her brow hinting at mirth. by long-standing accord, the decree would pass over dorne as water around stone. and if the king should send his men of the chain, expecting goodwill? her own mind turns over the thought. it would be a great joy to turn them away. "how curious his grace neglected to announce the hunt," she drawls, eyes tracking one of the lieges bedecked in the fauna of their house. "and in a hall so ripe with game."
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷
DARK CURLS REMAINED LOOSE, CASCADING down her back in a fashion very much like herself. despite the nimble digits of one of her ladies - weaving raven like locks into intricate braids, aiming to keep stray strands from her face. green hues remained locked on her own folded hands, deep breath inhaled through her nose. the air had long since grown thick. perhaps with tension, perhaps with the newfound weight of a multitude of eyes she had still not quite grown used to. soft words of gratitude are uttered as the lady finishes styling her hair. footsteps all but echo in the newly settled silence of her and aemon's chambers, hues shifting up towards the wall just as another lady nears her. ❝ forgive my intrusion, my lady but your brother is - ❞ she does not quite get to finish for raya is out of her seat and rushing towards the door before she gets the chance to. raya stark had never been built for the practiced choreography of the capital's courts. the sound of his voice cuts through the remaining space between them like a sudden northern breeze, sharp and entirely grounding. ❝ blood of my blood. ❞ a smile finds the doll like features of the northern woman, bright green hues meeting the mirrored gaze of her brother. ❝ yes. ❞ comes her curt response before she's pulling her brother into a tight embrace. for a moment, she says nothing else - only hugs him tightly. and then, slowly... reluctantly, she releases him. taking a small step back, raya studies the familiar lines of his face, searching his features just as fiercely as he searches her own. shoulders draw inward ever so slightly as if she might somehow disappear into the comfort of his shadow. ❝ are you all settled ?? surely they can prepare the spare chambers not far from here. i should like to have you close. ❞ aemon would certainly make it happen, all she had to do was ask.
words die on his lips, surprise halting them more effectively than any command could. for a moment, avan is all but stilled in her embrace. it had been months since raya left, months since anyone had crossed the space between them without ceremony. but her presence warms him, and his arms wrap around her in kind, a firm embrace. " i am, " he answers, eyes lingering on her a moment longer, as though reluctant to believe her words. " settled. you need not trouble yourself on my account. " though she has pulled back, a hand settles on her arm, " then i will not be far from you while i am here. " the silence that falls between them an old one, familiar rather than uncomfortable. he pays little mind to the lady lingering at the edges of their conversation, listening though she pretends otherwise. " you write that you are well cared for, " yet word of the king's unpredictability needs no raven to travel north. " i’m glad to see it for myself. "
despite all her years in the north, lysara would always be more arryn than she was stark. the coldness that she presented may fool people to think otherwise, think that it was the ice of he north that made her like that. but it was the cold winds of the eyrie, the chill of high altitude. it was the love she held for the wolves she'd birthed and the ones she'd known since childhood that made her soft for her house, made her prideful of it's history. it wasn't enough to keep her ass glued to it's seat, however. " happily. " she quips, taking her nephews hand as they rise, ignoring any gazes that fall on them. " if you tried, i'd perhaps take one of those wooden swords and beat you with it. " her teasing smile betrays her, showing the jest beneath her words as they step down from the stands, spine relaxing with every step away from prying eyes. " speaking of, someone stole from my stash on the way here. you wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you ? "
he guided her down the last of the steps before relinquishing her hand. the further the pair drew from the stands, the easier each breath came to him; one could never be wholly free from eyes here, but removed from the audience at last his mouth twitches. the closest thing to a grin he will afford. " do you still count the casks, then? " ever innocent is his countenance, just as it had been in the days of his youth, when he learned there was no use denying when caught by his lady aunt. standing beside her is no schooled lord stark, but a nephew, as good as seen in the act. " it was requisitioned for a worthy cause, " amusement lingers at the edges of his admission. " consider it an investment in house stark's future. "
impassiveness meets his approach, gaze turning from avan to the other occupants in the great hall. erena had not thought to wonder if she had joined the tourney to prove, inadvertently, that they were enough to the starks as well. delving into any of the complicated emotions that rose upon seeing any that belonged to the brood. silence from them meets his words, returning attention to him as they blinked once, then twice. an attempt to work out what sort of motivations he would have for seeking them out — the cursory praise a warden is to offer to their subjects, or an attempt to lower their defenses ? “ is there a purpose to this ? ” devoid of any fondness their voice may have once held, yet greeted more coldly than she would a stranger.
their question is met with little more than a quiet look. there is no offense to be found upon the lord's features now, merely understanding. plainly, erena had left whatever bond existed between them within the walls of winterfell. but hadn't he, too? abandoned alongside his childhood, like countless other things he had forgotten to mourn. " i came to offer my congratulations, nothing more. " neither hollow courtesy nor obligation has carried him here. only, it would seem, a lingering curiosity. slight inclination of his head follows, the gesture is as restrained as the man himself. " i will leave you to your cup, erena. and your company. "
aemon had been nervous in inviting the lord stark into the box, but had been advised to do so by his father. it will show good will, aemon, we need the starks on our side. side for what? he had tried to question his father, but the vacant look in the man's eyes had returned and the prince had known that his time with his father was over. it was not that he did not wish to make good with his wife's brother, but aemon was easily intimidated and how could he manage to face the man whose sister he had stolen away? well, she had spent more time in winterfell than within king's landing since they had been married, so had he really done that? or had he just formed an alliance without the meaning of marriage. he did not know, though it could remain to be seen the night that his wife and he had shared just a week prior could mean something for their future. aemon chooses not to think about such a thing now, not with her family sat next to him. it surely did not help to see her upon the field below, watching as his wife's strength whipped through the air at an impressive speed. avan's words settle in his gut and aemon does not know if it is in a good way or bad quite yet. "i do not believe any thanks are necessary, my lord," aemon does not look next to him, for looking lord stark in the eyes felt daunting, "she would fit into any place she decided to settle, that i am sure of." there is a fondness choking him, a gentleness to his voice he cannot avoid. "have you found the city welcoming? i know it is much different than winterfell — your sister still prefers it to here, though i do not blame her."
only a subtle nod follows the prince's assurance, though it is the softness in aemon's voice that draws avan's gaze at last. for a moment he studies him, finding only the man's profile before he abandons the effort. his own attention returns to the lists below, where the next archers take their mark. raya had never been the subject of his unease. winterfell had shaped her as surely as him; she would find her footing wherever the gods sought to place her. it was the distance that troubled him. between them lay miles of empty road, too many for a brother's sword to cross swiftly in his sister's defense. ladies and queens alike had found themselves alone in halls before, and who would aid raya, but a man who could not even meet avan's own eyes? " welcoming enough, " he answers at length. " though it is no winterfell. "
his eyes are still afield when he speaks again, a question posed without accusation, though it stands as more than mere curiosity. " is it the cold that deters you, your grace? " or were they to always be mere wolves answering a call to heel? " the road south seems forever worn smooth beneath northern horses. i have often wondered whether the journey might one day be made in the opposite direction. "

she catches it in an instant, and must make a decision just as quickly. to be a nice younger sibling and leave robar to lick his wounds, regardless of his victory — or twist the knife. “ robar, ” greets in return, padding up to stand next to him. his expression of pain makes the choice for her, leaning down enough to wrap her arms just under his sternum and squeeze. “ i am here to congratulate you, of course. ” another tightening of her arms before she pulls away, serene smile on her lips. “ you do not look happy with your victory, brother. is something troubling you ? ” asks so sweetly one might mistake it for genuine if not for the way her smile turns sharper, words more pointed. “ perhaps … your back ? i could put more pressure on it to see if it will help. ”
breath leaves him in a sharp hiss as arms tighten around bruised ribs, the muscles of his abdomen contracting painfully. by the time she withdraws, it is a glare that sets in his features - though robar has oft found it difficult to maintain ire where kella is concerned. even now, there is evidence of that long suffering affection. " you have always been.. generous with your congratulations. " ache does not settle, the compliment delivered through gritted teeth. and then, sharper, " my back is perfectly sound. " a shift in his seat, he sits upright in demonstration. that saccharine smile is an appalling thing when directed at him, yet the lord has found himself in worse states and still able to provoke. " perhaps you should consider a place at the citadel, sweet sister. there is still time, i'm sure, though you are aged. "

swift tunes upon instruments flow through the grand hall . an act of escapism has been performed as slender fingers coil around the stone of a balcony , shielding the music if ever so gently . auburn locks sway in the wind as sigh escapes red tinted lips . “ even beautiful sounds become straining when played without proper love for it. “ she murmurs mostly to herself , unaware of the approaching company close by . she's been standing alone for some time , tormenting herself with what could've and should've been . she's a daughter of a great man , yet her fingers tremble ever so lightly . it's sickening . ” pull yourself together . ” whispered towards the darkness of the night . "
the royce lord had never been known to flee a feast. in fact, he rather enjoyed them. yet in king's landing, he was hardly in the mood to lose himself to his cups. after an hour of stewing, the cool air beyond the hall had become increasingly attractive. the balcony is already occupied by the time he reaches it, the lady's murmured observation spoken just as he considers withdrawing again. so he stays. " i imagine half the company within would disagree, " a lively tune drifts out from the hall, dancers laugh, sounds carrying clear through the crisp air. robar offers a shallow inclination of his head then, though he moves no closer. " ignorance makes for an enthusiastic audience. "
closed starter for avan stark @bareruin during the first day welcome feasts
the halls of the red keep were filled with great lords and ladies from all of the the realm, welcomed by the king's (strange) words, food and drink passed around among the guests. aegon himself could not bring himself to eat as much as he wished, between his anxieties and the greetings he needed to give to the guests, he knew he would be visiting the kitchens late tonight after the scraps were packed away and begging the cooks to make him a bowl of his favor stew. familiar faces filtered into the hall, upon seeing the brother of his good-sister, avan stark, aegon grabbed a couple cups of wine and made his way over. "lord stark," aegon greeted, offering one of the goblets. "welcome to king's landing, i hope the travel south was not too harsh for you."
a nod of thanks as he reaches for the goblet, raising it slightly as he speaks. " your grace, " the road south had been a tedious one. though there had been a time when the young lord stark took any excuse to stray from winterfell's walls, duty had long since stripped all romance from the idea. such travel was a poor expenditure these days, and though his wedding could wait, the north’s hunger could not. avan would offer no such complaint in present company. his gaze wanders across the hall before settling back on the prince. " as well as could be expected. i trust the realm has not made too great a demand of its host? "
it was odd, to be given the attention that winning the tourney had afforded. split second decision to etch their name onto the list to enduring the apathetic not quite disapproval but neither approval from their father from her act. erena had already mounted a rationale in her mind — their house was overlooked and if they won, people would speak of the boltons with something other than infamy. if she had lost, people would forget about their presence and move about them all cautiously as they already did. she had not expected to best any in the contest, if they were to be honest. they thought little of their skill for years now despite the methodical way she remembered both their mother and father correcting her stance with a patience that was no longer afforded in their adulthood. erena had known each arrow would ring true, yes. their father had set up for a target to move in the years they had been back to the dreadfort, offering more challenge and yet …
seated towards the back of the great hall with a single goblet of arbor red untouched before them, the eyes prickled against their skin uncomfortably. “ there is someone sitting there, ” she speaks softly when another approached, lying easily as though the empty bench was not proof enough to the contrary.

there was no doubt erena had made a fine showing for the north. it had been a curious thing to watch the tourney unfold from the targaryen viewing box. without question, the elder stark rooted for his sister from the moment she stepped onto the field. yet by the time the final arrow was knocked and loosed, avan found himself unable to summon disappointment at the outcome.
he told himself it would be the polite thing to do, to offer his congratulations, so he finds himself in the back of the feast hall before the night's end. avan doesn't miss a beat with his reply, though he doesn't need to so much as glance at the bench to know it is empty. " then i will be glad to stand. " and stand he does, quietly for a moment, trying to produce a suitable compliment. " you are a far better marksman than i remember. " when they were children, he means. when erena had been his father's ward. and more, for he hasn't forgotten that once, erena had even been a friend.

𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐃: robar royce ( @bareruin )
" i can't believe you're going to potentially fight petyr in the tourney. " there's an amused smile on her lips, all too delighted at the prospect. she'd been daydreaming about it for a little too long during the feast to get her through the anger. she offers no other greeting as she comes to stand beside him on the balcony, no idle chatter despite the fact that she's not seen him since the last time she'd been in the eyrie years ago. she simply carries on as though no time has passed, a commodity only afforded to two people who have known each other a long time. " how could you even brag about winning if you're up against such an old man? "
in the following days, after the performance attended by alys.
by the time he finds lysara, the lord is in a thoroughly disagreeable mood. the melee had left its mark; not a grievous injury, but a humbling one all the same. his steps are measured as he approaches, at last coming to settle a careful shoulder against stone. they never had required much of one another where greetings were concerned, so robar returns to their conversation on the balcony with ease. a paltry attempt at levity. " at least petyr did me the courtesy of a swift loss. alayne may well have taken up his sword had it been me to knock him in the dirt. " years had passed since last they shared in one another's company, years since she'd traded her place in the vale for vast expanse and a northern match. yet the sight of her remains familiar. more familiar is her anger. at least she won't have to guess whether or not it's shared between them. the king's fresh insult remains at the forefront of his mind, so says the long silence that follows. elsewhere, a feast drones on without them. " if this is the cost of peace, i find i have lost the taste for it. "
iWith her children occupied, either watching the performance or being cared for by their septa, Mirelle had a bit more freedom to move about and had chosen not to settle towards the front of the hall where the best view of the performance could be found, instead opting for the quieter areas of the hall's opposite end. She was, of course, well aware this would not keep all curious eyes off her but perhaps it might alleviate the observances at least slightly. Although the noblewoman had fully adapted to being so fully perceived after taking on the mantle as ruling lady of Casterly Rock, it did not mean she wouldn't seek out bits and pieces of solitude where possible. Looking over to meet Nymeria's gaze, the raven-haired lady dipped her head in recognition. "And if we were in your hall, what alterations to the adaptation might I expect?" Mirelle asked quietly, raising one eyebrow in signal of curiosity.
the question earns a true flicker of amusement, yet nymeria finds herself turning it over all the same. she had spent most of her life beneath the banners of house martell, reared on stories of would-be conquerors, of a dragon falling from dornish skies. she offers only a shrug. " i hold no hall, and speak for none, " the admission is offered up easily, without shame. " but i have been a guest in many. i've come to know the alterations well. " she turns to better regard her, angling herself so they may still be mistaken as viewers. it strikes the dornish woman as odd that a lionness should be prowling in the margins, here among the outsiders of court, rather than basking in her place in the center. " though i must admit, i am curious. " a pause, a breath, a seemingly meaningless probe cast between them. " what interest would the lady of casterly rock have in alternative tellings? "
