I try not to post too much of my own frustration with books and shows and movies I care about. But Reading the interviews post-TVL finale is even more frustrating than the episode itself. I mean dear god, the showrunners are literally never gonna let Lestat actually accept blame for a single fucking thing, are they?
The whole last episode is supposed to be about Lestat reckoning with his “failures,” but the narrative itself absolves him of pretty much everything! It only allows for one moment of admitting Lestat's culpability in the finale — the last few seconds, looking out at the devastation wrought by Akasha, where he says “the fault was mine,” and what did Rolin Jones say about that?
Even if it’s a truly complicated situation, you’re removing the last scrap of agency and culpability from him by undermining that statement right now! Look, I love Lestat. He is an interesting, passionate, deeply flawed character who truly wants to be (his idea of) a good person but gets caught up in his own impulsivity, short-sightedness, and entitlement. But by stripping him of responsibility or blame or even agency, they’re turning him into nothing. And they’ve already shown that they're doing this in multiple ways, many of which directly contradict the books:
he didn’t go looking for Marius, Marius just stumbled upon him,
he didn’t impulsively try to wake Alaska and Enkil, he was just entertaining them like Marius told him to,
it was all Louis’ fault that Lestat agreed to turn Claudia (they can share blame, sure, but all of it?!),
it was Akasha’s blood to blame for him abusing Louis and Claudia and that was only because Louis was just soooo mean to him,
he didn't threaten Claudia on the train and in fact he was her favorite the whole time,
he’s the one who saved Louis at the trial,
…and let’s just ignore the part where he participated in the trial at all (for no reason that the show has chosen to show us) and got his daughter killed!!!
One crumb of hope for some actual agency and accountability lies in that last line of 3x07, when Lestat basically says “you know what, no more equivocating, no more ‘really it’s everyone’s fault’... on this one thing, the fault was mine.” And Jones can’t even let THAT be true!
The Vampire Lestat cast and creator Rolin Jones unpack that finale, from Lestat and Paul's reunion to that Queen of the Damned tease.
Say what you will about "oh we have to wait for season 4." They managed to tell a coherent, cohesive story with complex characters in season 1 even though that was only half of Louis' story. Lestat didn't come out looking great, but he didn't come out looking like a flat, uninteresting, two-dimensional villain, and they clearly showed that he and Louis adored each other even if it was unhealthy. You can tell a story in one season that doesn't flatten your characters entirely and still make it even more complex the next season. We've seen them do it and they did it beautifully!
We had two seasons of beautiful storytelling with a character that managed to be both loveable and hateable, a beautiful depiction how sometimes a victim of abuse with no support can inadvertently continue that cycle... and they really decided to say Lestat Is Blameless, Actually. How tremendously disappointing.

I’m sorry Europeans but America is the culmination of the European project of colonization, enslavement and capitalism. This is your child not claiming them doesn’t make them not yours. America is merely an extension and a continuation of Europe on other shores, as is Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
You’ve been more than happy to align yourself with America for these very reasons. It’s profitable, your own colonial ventures may even get backed up militarily by America and you can still seem progressive in comparison while being an accomplice.
You can’t wash your hands of centuries of blood at the last minute when America is collapsing. “Oh we were never like that, that’s an American problem, we never colonized or enslaved or bombed, not us no no no” that won’t protect your nation’s governments from the future crimes against humanity tribunals sorry!
Here's a source for the analysis, but it probably is not the source.
Workers’ share of US economic output has fallen to its lowest level since the government began keeping records in 1947, according to data th
Some points of interest:
Corporate profits are soaring. After taxes, they now take 12.3 percent of national output, far above their postwar average of 7.3 percent.
Adjusted for inflation, hourly wages have risen 3 percent since the end of 2019, Ip noted. Corporate profits over the same period have risen 50 percent.
The Economic Policy Institute calculates that since 1979 the productivity of American workers has grown 90 percent while the pay of the typical worker has grown 33 percent. Had wages tracked output, the average worker would earn $16.40 more an hour today.
The profits are concentrated among the largest corporations. Earnings at the 500 biggest US firms rose 28 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, the fastest pace since 2021, and their profit margins reached 14.8 percent. The seven technology giants known as the “Magnificent 7”—Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Tesla—grew their profits 63 percent.
In the United States, the richest 1 percent of households hold 31.7 percent of all wealth. The bottom half hold barely 2.5 percent.
The war on drugs is rooted in racist policies . The failure of the war and drugs is obvious. We need to find a better solution, because people of color should never be the victims of racist policies. White Americans are more likely than black Americans to have used most kinds of illegal drugs, including cocaine and LSD. Yet blacks are far more likely to go to prison for marijuana, which is not a hard drug. Moreover , even when white people get caught , they get less time in prison.

i’m so tired of it. oh you’re jaded? oh you’re casually cruel? oh you think it’s funny? you think you’re better than everybody else? snooze! why don’t you go get a real personality
Genuinely 90% of historical fiction would be so much better if more writers could get more comfortable with the fact that to create a good story set in a different time period you do actually have to give the characters beliefs & values which reflect that time period
You can research what people actually said in history!
In 1726, when William Brown was on trial for attempted sodomy in London, he didn't say "I was born this way", he said, "“I think there is no crime in making what use I please of my own body”.
In the 12th century, Hildegard of Bingen didn't say, "A woman can do anything a man can do!", she said, God created men and women with different humours and having too much of the male elements will throw society out of balance.
In the 1860s, Millicent Garrett Fawcett didn't say, "Women are just as smart as men", she said, Men get to vote no matter how dumb they are.
In the 1850s, William Craft didn't say, "Africans are just as smart as Europeans and it's bigoted to say otherwise", he said that Africans have thick skulls “to defend the brain from the tropical climate in which he lived. If God had not given them thick skulls their brains would probably have become very much like those of many scientific gentlemen of the present day”
