A photographer for Getty isn't even a journalist so much as an archivist. ICE violently disrupted the apolitical documentation of what they were doing, violating any and all rights that might flimsily stand in their way. It would have been just as wrong had they done this to an MSNBC reporter hellbent on a spin, but now Abernathy's neutral action as a photographer has been rendered necessarily political by ICE's violence.
They know what they're doing is objectively evil. They have no intention of stopping.
There’s a scientific journal called “Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List”.
In 2005, computer scientists David Mazières and Eddie Kohler created this highly profane ten-page paper as a joke, to send in replying to unwanted conference invitations. It literally just contains that seven-word phrase over and over, along with a nice flow chart and scatter-plot graph.
An Australian computer scientist named Peter Vamplew sent it to the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology in response to spam from the journal. Apparently, he thought the editors might simply open and read it.
Instead, they automatically accepted the paper — with an anonymous reviewer rating it as “excellent” — and requested a fee of $150. While this incident is pretty hilarious, it’s a sign of a bigger problem in science publishing. This journal is one of many online-only, for-profit operations that take advantage of inexperienced researchers under pressure to publish their work in any outlet that seems superficially legitimate.
I can’t speak for other social media webbed sites but I really enjoy how tumblr seems to just completely spin a wheel on whatever media is hot right now. Like yeah sometimes it’s a new show that’s big and actively coming out but also sometimes there will be a solid month where half my dash is Columbo memes. Defy authority. Get really into an book from the 1800s. Watch shows that haven’t aired in 40 years. Celebrate the anniversary of the Boston Molasses Flood. Become unmarketable

This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace

Sorry we really went from free the nipple, take back the night, slut walks, and ending gender/sex segregation in sports being fucking milquetoast feminism 101 concepts to fucking girl dinner and "I just worry about fairness if we let trans girls play against cis ones" and "it was right of that woman to call the cops on a black man for existing near here in public during the day time because men are all violent monsters" and "radical feminism isn't transphobic we just need to kill all men including trans ones those oppressive traitors" and I will legit never be able to be normal about it. What the FUCK happened. I'd say I wonder what the feminists of my youth would say about this but I'm one and lemme tell ya I want to throw up. Go fucking read bell hooks or do something else useful please because all of this learned helplessness, gender essentialism, and transphobia dressed up as feminism is actively holding us back.
I’m the president of a student organization that means the world to me and launches balloons for the literal national weather service office where I live. also I need a minute if I ever see a picture of gerard way
It's not a virtue to focus totally on your own peace and disregard problems around you. Ironically, it's also not a virtue to stew in your own anxiety.
People online like "I will NOT seek peace while there is suffering around me! I will inflict suffering on myself as long as there is pain in the world!"
It's one thing if you say "As long as there are hungry people in my community, I'll stay engaged with the food bank," (which probably will actually comfort you because you'll be surrounded by people working for a solution!) but for a lot of people it's "As long as there is suffering in the world, I will self-flagellate with sad Instagram reels," and you might as well not.

Reminder that high temperatures become more dangerous at high humidities, because the body's main way of cooling - sweating - stops working. If it's too humid, sweat can't evaporate, which means it can't cool you down
Folks in areas that don't usually get very humid: you're going to need to rely more on external cooling methods during this. Drinking lots of water, using ice packs (or just a wet cloth put in the freezer for a bit), and frankly just staying inside in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible if you can. I'm sure people from areas where it normally gets humid have more and better advice. But yeah, stay safe out there
Humidity and heat together form a Saint Bernard that sits on the chest all day, that will aggravate asthma and cause even healthy, heat-acclimated folks to pant after a little work.
I have a fair amount of experience with this kind of weather, both as safety coordinator for a hot manufacturing environment and as a person who loves outdoor activities but was raised in a humid subtropical climate, including inland and practically windless areas, so for folks who aren't used to this, I hope you can get something out of what I've learned. I'm only going to list things I've learned that don't rely on AC/power/new clothes/new equipment, because goodness knows not enough of us have the means to buy a new umbrella just because it's starting to rain outside.
It's best to go slow, much slower than usual, and take lots of breaks. I'm talking 10min for 30min of movement or work. Resting at each shady spot on a walk. It's easier to stay cool (well, cool-ish) than to cool down. Heat is stressful on the body and mind, and when heat exhaustion starts to set in, it scrambles decision-making.
Water. The average human body can only absorb about 8oz (240mL) of liquid water every 15 minutes or so. Too much more, or more quickly than that, is just going to leave and take precious salts with it. Cool, but not cold, is ideal for absorption, and for keeping the thirst signals firing. About 1 quart (1L) per hour is just about ideal for heavy sweating, but it'll still leave you fatigued and weak without enough...
Food. Food slows down water and gives it time to absorb, especially fiber. That's part of how products like Liquid IV or Powerade work, by providing components that help drag water into the body. Sugar's not an ideal candidate, and too much will dampen the appetite - better is stuff with some fiber, protein, fat, and minerals, which brings me to...
Salts. Not just sodium, but potassium, magnesium, calcium, and others, tons of minerals are lost to sweat that need replacing. Nuts, fresh or dried fruit, beans, fish, leafy vegetables are all great choices. Supplements are out there, but picking one with a decent amount of potassium and not just salt is tricky. One of my favorite summer treats after hard work in the sun, is the combination of a bag of pork rinds and a tall michelada, with just about everything: water, carbs, protein, salt(s), and fat. No fiber, really, but I did say it was a treat.
Alcohol (ethanol). Drinking more than about 16oz (500mL) of 4.5% alcohol by volume (ABV) is an easy way to start to deplete ADH, a critical hormone that tells the body to retain water, instead of quickly dumping it into the bladder. There is some research indicating that a small amount of alcohol (~1 "standard" drink - a beer, a small cup of wine, a finger or two of liquor) helps make the lining of the stomach more permeable and absorb water more quickly, but more than about one drink, and any gains in hydration speed are lost in depletion of ADH. Alcohol metabolism is awfully complicated and depends on many factors, but that's a fair estimate. Some folks will lump caffeine in with alcohol, but a reasonable caffeine intake isn't going to do that much in terms of water loss (~95% retention of 8oz of tea or American-style coffee instead of 100% for plain water).
Stimulants, antidepressants, a ton of drugs: a bunch of these increase sensitivity to heat or sun and heat. Really it's just something to be aware of and account for with additional rest, or even maybe reduce the quantity of, if it's safe.
Covering the skin with loose, baggy, billowy, airy, breathable clothing if at all possible, that will help keep the sun and reflected heat off the skin, will produce light breeze when moving, and will pull sweat away from the body to farther away, where it's slightly more likely to evaporate. Dry clothes breathe better than wet ones, too, because the gaps between the fibers are airy and open, instead of closed up with liquid. Changing clothes frequently into dry, or wringing out the clothes worn, will help keep a body more comfortable and cool.
Frequent cool or cold showers, or just lots of water in general. There are not many bodies of water that have temperatures higher than the human body. Time spent in cool water literally transfers heat energy from the body to the water, much more efficiently than air ever could. Naturally, sweat doesn't evaporate underwater to provide additional cooling, but we're talking hot and humid - the sweat isn't evaporating, not really, anyway.
Finally, I do like Link Wray sang- cover my head and pray for rain.
I hope everyone can take care and stay safe out there. Good luck.
