Question; does kanna exist in the atla gods au? If she does, is she a southern god or northern?(Btw love your art and worldbuilding around everything 💕 ❤️)
She does! She's the goddess of meals and weaving.
She's considered to be very important in both of the water tribes.
Pakku is the god of Order. It's a well-known myth in the Northern Water Tribe that Pakku attempted to pressure Kanna into marrying him, hundreds of years ago.
When she left, the Northern tribe suffered through a decade-long famine. It's said that the famine only ended when Pakku traveled down from the North pole to the South, all alone on a tiny ship, to apologize for mistreating her. Kanna accepted his apology, but told him to leave the South pole and to never return.
Because of this myth, the Northern Water Tribe have a healthy fear of Kanna, afraid to upset her and start up a new famine. The Southern Water Tribe worship Kanna as if she were always from their tribe-- there's no fear in that relationship, only reverence towards the one that gives them the ability to stay healthy and warm with food and clothing.
There was a quiet understanding between the women of the Northern Lands: the one named Kanna will change the world.
The first signs of her true nature appeared through her meals, simple recipes that always yielded satiated stomachs and rejuvenated souls.
In fact, one myth among the many under Kanna's name, speak of the goddess sharing a meal with an ill and weary fisherman. He had warned her to stay away, worried he would pass the sickness on to her. But she did not heed his words. Instead, she sat next to his cot, and fed him with all the love a daughter would have for her father.
The next morning, he disappeared.
Unbeknownst to everyone but Kanna, the fisherman had dashed off to sea, using his restored vitality to set sail into the frigid waters once more. When he came back with his catch of the day, people were awestruck. Such was the miracle of Kanna that no one had thought possible.
Since then, mealmaking became an art form, and the goddess did indeed take on apprentices to carry on her techniques. Under her watchful gaze, they threw together exquisite feasts. However, they could never quite fully recreate the effects their instructor's cooking had on others.
"Eat from Kanna's hands," one student affirmed reverentially, "and you will never ask for seconds."
Next, came her garments, an ensemble of animal furs and hide that were skillfully tailored to last generations. These were the true treasures of the Northern Lands, for tribesmen far and wide could recognize within them a remarkable warmth and durability no other coat could provide.
But they soon became a source of great envy for hunters.
Many laid their bounties before Kanna, willing to go any lengths to wear a garment made by the goddess's hand. She had relented the first few times, for it was customary to bring materials to a craftsmaker. But as time passed, this practice of "bounty" began to encourage unnecessary slaughter and in-fighting, harming the order of the natural world. She soon closed her doors to the undeserving.
The people of the Southern Lands theorize this event foretold the beginning of the Rift.
To his credit, Pakku reacted to the destabilization of his domain with more grace and self-restraint than other gods. He believed order required control and discipline. Were he to violate these terms himself, he would never be able to enforce order in the world. However, the methodology he resorted to was still... far from favorable.
By now, Kanna had refused his marriage proposal two times. It was already two times too many. For her, in being asked. For him, for having to.
Pakku didn't understand. Order in the Northern Lands was quickly disassembling itself under Kanna's influence. Couldn't she see that? If she simply joined forces with him, the mortals would not dare to defy her, because they would not dare to defy him. She needs him, that much was obvious. And, better yet, he could use their marriage to model what a world founded on structure and obedience would look like!
After all, the mortals don't know any better. But they do.
Kanna disagreed. Humans can be rather stubborn, but they can also adapt under the right circumstances. Their survival here is a testament to that adaptability. If their civilization must reshape to accommodate the truth that not everyone will be deigned with her blessings, then so be it. There was a necessary lesson to be learned when someone says no. A lesson that apparently the God of Order himself had missed in his upbringing among mortals. But still, there is always a chance for redemption... if one assumes accountability.
"What is there for me or the mortals to be accountable for?" he laughed derisively, "You were the one who decided to share your gifts with them. Such wonderful gifts, that they inspired a civilization to tear itself apart. If you had stood aside, like the women of these lands, none of this would have happened."
Kanna's face slacked at the god's outburst. Meanwhile, he nonchalantly raised a bowl of soup to his lips.
"Really, Kanna, I thought you would have understood, but I realize now you are too busy playing 'mortals' to see the bigger picture."
Oh. Oh. So that was where he stood on the matter. Very well.
Pakku grimaced, startled by the sudden coldness of the broth. He leveled his eyes on the goddess sitting before him, her own full bowl left unattended. It was a bad omen, among mortals, for the goddess of meals to not share a meal with you. It meant she would withdraw her care.
Well then, he did not care either. No amount of soup was ever going to triumph over something as important as maintaining order.
That was the last time they talked to each other in the Northern Lands.
For the next few months, Kanna began making mysterious trips outside of the village, taking her weaving materials with her. No one knew where she went and what she did there. Even expert hunting trackers failed to follow her, consistently overtaken by a field of mist and fog that shrouded her from their prying eyes.
The destination itself was a remote cave outlooking the shores. In it, a thousand empty baskets, woven by hand. Some to carry food, others to carry supplies and belongings.
Kanna resolved to take with her whoever was willing to go: her mealmaking apprentices, the families who wore her garments. Anyone who felt stifled and unsafe under the new "order" that had arranged itself. She had seen the way they were harassed and ousted from their homes. Yes, she would take them somewhere far away.
By the time Pakku noticed the cracks growing in the ice, it was too late. Kanna was already sailing into the light of daybreak with her people. And, as he watched her silhouette grow smaller, a hazy outline of an ancient who firmly stood on the precipice of reality and its unmaking, he heard a voice:
"I make sure my people have what they truly need. Will you be able to say the same?"

SOKKA!
There may have been a hunting god before Sokka, but they've long been forgotten. When wars began to break out across the mortal world, food scarcity became an issue again. People began to pray for bountiful/successful hunts, and with that, a god had to emerge to fill that void.
Sokka spent a long time living as a wolf, seamlessly taking his place amongst wolf packs. When gods are young, they spend their first few years almost as a mirage, half-conscious as they appear in crowds, unnoticed by the mortals surrounding them.
When he finally gained full-consciousness, he left the wolf pack and explored the woods until he found himself wandering around in the snow. That's where Hakoda and Kya found him. They weren't certain, at first, if he was a god. It wasn't until a year into living with them, when the wolf puppy they took in was still a puppy, that they knew.
It took a few years after that for Sokka to take on a humanoid form to imitate his parents. Having spent a significant amount of time in the wilderness before meeting Hakoda and Kya, Sokka is much more comfortable shifting forms than most other gods.
He becomes a wisdom god in his teens, after running off and spending a significant amount of time exploring cities and towns. He even finds Wan Shi Tong's library, and loses track of time, spending several years scouring the shelves.
SMALL STUFF!
His markings are still there, even as a wolf... it's just a lot more subtle. And yeah they're not tattoos.
HE HAS FANGS! His teeth changing when he shifts into a humanoid just felt WAY too weird to him, so he consciously keeps sharper teeth.
Hakoda is very very weak to Sokka's puppy dog eyes

OKAY YOU LEFT A LOT OF THINGS IN TAGS AND IT DIDN'T ALL FIT IN A SCREENSHOT HAHAHAHA
first of all thank you so much for always yapping in the tags omg I love reading your thoughts :DDDD
So, yes, godlings appear as a mirage to all mortals, not just humans. They appear for a bit, and the mortals' brains rationalize their appearance (large group of people/animals? all of the adults tell themselves "huh, must be someone else's kid? chill ok"). Then, when they disappear, the mortals rationalize the disappearance ("huh, kid is gone? maybe i just didn't know their parents")
They still have memories of the godling if they noticed them, and may even realize that the godling wasn't a mortal.
In Sokka's case with the wolf pack (the last one, anyway. He kinda blipped in and out of multiple different packs across the world during his "half-formed" stage), the wolves remember him. He actually goes back to visit them sometimes-- but he's a god, and he ages slower... so he's still a puppy every time he visits, up until he's outlived all of the original pack members he knew.
That was his first time dealing with his own immortality :)

She's the Goddess of Victory and the Truth, amongst other things. She's one of the most-revered gods out there, due to how powerful a domain she holds. Athletes, soldiers, and leaders alike all pray to her very often.
Her blindness is not at all seen as an issue by mortals-- actually, due to her blindness, mortals tend to be much kinder to disabled folk.
It's seen as sacrilegious to forbid someone from participating in sports, contest, or even war on the basis of their perceived abilities. It's seen almost as if you're saying that Toph wouldn't be able to do that.
She's also the patron of innovation. She's the first form of Metalbending, and inventors/tinkerers will often pray to both her and Sokka (god of wisdom) when they go to create something new.
The Blind Bandit is an enigma.
No one really knows what she is-- she might be the goddess of trickery? And lies? but she's the only goddess to have no temples, to never ask for offerings or prayers, and she doesn't really... act like a goddess.
Really, she's more of a cryptid than a goddess- she definitely isn't human, considering she's been hanging around for like 300 years... but yeah no one really knows what she's up to.
Yes the wolf she's riding on is Sokka- he isn't too happy about it but he has a soft spot for Toph.
Aang and The Blind Bandit meet each other pretty often on the road-- he's normally the epitome of "good deeds" but she's a really bad influence on him (some think that he just can't say no to someone that shares his sense of style)
Info!
Had a LOT of fun combining Air Nomad outfit elements with a more typical "travel" outfit. Super warm colour palettes of course!
Aang is the god of balance, travelers, and hospitality. He's a bit of a free spirit and a lot of the more serious gods find him a bit annoying (Sokka.)
People often pray to Aang when they have to go on long journeys, or invoke his name when they need to stop to rest.
It's a well-known fact that the god of travelers has a habit of wandering around incognito-- he just does it because he likes interacting with people without being recognized. In doing so, however, he accidentally started to enforce his hospitality domain, as mortals became terrified of accidentally offending him if he were to show up at their door.
He loves to follow Sokka around on hunts (he gets to explore dangerous areas)-- Sokka hates when Aang follows him because he almost always ends up losing his catch.
Katara and Aang's Justice and Balance domains mean that they often are called upon together by mortals. Katara, to enact a fitting punishment upon perpetrators. And Aang, to provide reparations to victims. It's found to be very fitting that they ended up becoming a couple.
I know I've literally got another au in the works already but i don't care man I love mythology and now they're gods >:)))))
Some info!
Katara and Sokka's face markings are based on the Painted Lady and Warrior makeup (respectively)-- on top of giving Sokka some winged eyeliner to resemble a wolf's markings (as the master of wolves), and a semi-circle on Katara's forehead as a symbol of equality (as the goddess of justice).
Gods don't technically "die" in this AU-- it doesn't happen often, but when it does, they usually become one with their domain. When Gyatso died, as the god of the wind, he turned into the wind and could only communicate through wind chimes (small signs/yes/no-- he can't communicate complex thoughts).
When Kya died, she turned into the starry sky. Hakoda, grieving his wife, would often study her form in the sky and learned to use the patterns of her stars to navigate, which made him become god of navigators.
When Kya died, people started praying to Sokka and Katara for matters of family and home-- it's not actually their domain, but they gratefully accept the duties that come with taking over for their mother.
Katara's necklace has sharp points in this to relate to her mother's star domain.
Katara's cloak is a sealskin (as the matron of sealife)
Yes, Sokka's leg is still hurt in this (still trying to figure out the story behind that, but I love when characters get permanent injuries in media and I'm KEEPING IT) he has a cane-- doesn't always need to use it but he has it!
Sokka's cloak is a polar bear dog's hide (as the god of hunting)

What if the children go to schools unafraid of tear gas and bullets?
What if the birds come back, and the bees are healed, and every species moves from endangered, to threatened, to thriving?
What if the rainforest ADVANCES?
What if every parking lot had solar panels? What if every structure had solar panels? What if we built climbing gyms and terraced gardens in the skeletons of old coal power plants?
What if you baked your neighbor bread, and they shared their home-grown blackberries?
What if every person who needed a home, had one? What if every person who needed healing was healed?
What if every body was treasured for what it was, not what it should be?
What if every trans child's parents attended their graduation, their wedding, their new-name-day?
What if every warehouse became a closed-circle repair station? Goods flowing out, and back, and out again? What if landfills started to SHRINK?
What if the water and air were clean? What if there was enough public transit that the cars dwindled, leaving the streets safe for kids on bikes, evening deer, midnight cats and foxes?
The condors are back. The whales are saved. The sea turtles are no longer endangered. The cranes are back. The bees are recovering. The air in LA and Tokyo and London is clean again. The aquifers in the LA Basin are refilling.
Children are kinder than previous generations. Parents are stopping the abuse cycle. Being trans and queer is more acceptable than ever on a ground level.
It's hard to see if you're young, if you don't know how to step back from social media and the news. But remember--bad news sells, and the algorithm knows despair keeps you scrolling. It's a skewed lens.
We are fighting and we are winning against this adminstration's bullying. We are coming together against the bullies and they are running away scared because they don't understand that we will do that.
People are working hard every day to find ways to make sure fewer animals get hit by cars and planes and rockets.
Maker spaces are more common than ever. Solar and wind are more common than ever. Coal plants are shutting down every day.
Unprecedented numbers of acres are being bought back or given back to their rightful stewards, and the world heals because of it. People are working hard every day to learn how to help a forest recover faster.
We are not at zero. We are at decades of effort to heal the world. We've come SO far.
In 1982 there were only 22 California Condors left in the world. In 1992, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with its public and private partners, began reintroducing captive-bred condors to the wild. In 2001 the first wild nesting occurred in Grand Canyon National Park since re-introduction. In 2002 there were only 8 pairs of wild nesting birds population-wide. In 2008, for the first time since the program began, more California condors were flying free in the wild than in captivity. Today there are nearly 500 – more than half of them flying free in Arizona, Utah, California, and Baja Mexico.
When I was born, there were no condors in the wild. I'm 37 now, and there are over 250 condors flying free.
When my mom was born in 1955, there were days when she wasn't allowed to go outside to play, because of the air pollution. When I was born, that never happened anymore.
When I was born, humpback whales were critically endangered, and people thought they were going to go extinct. Today, they've recovered to exceed their recorded numbers. Other whales too!
We fixed it.
We CAN fix it and we ARE fixing it and we DID fix it.
Since 1990 extreme poverty has decreased worldwide by over HALF.
This is not the narrative media sells us. We have access to more information about suffering now than we used to, but things are getting BETTER overall. Yeah some people are trying to undo this, but we have made SO MUCH PROGRESS. Don't give up.
The ground in these places is too compact for water to soak in during wet season which leads to flooding but digging these holes gives the water a place to stop and soak in. And they’re pushing back the desert with this. By just digging holes.
The new plants also help even more water soak into the ground which reduces flooding even more.
These places also give people places to grow food and graze animals like people are turning completely dry compact desert into a refuge for wildlife and plants and solving regional food insecurity just by digging holes.
The half-circles are called zaï! They're a traditional farming practice in the Sahel desert, and their introduction + reintroduction can be largely credited to Yacouba Sawadogo, the man linked above! He reintroduced and innovated on the zaï on his own farm in the 1980s, and did extensive outreach (along with scientist Mathieu Ouédraogo) to encourage other farmers to adopt them as well.
He also promoted the use of cordons pierreux, which are basically just lines of rocks to reduce erosion, preserve sediments, and increase water absorption.
Immensely cool dude. He's been a personal hero since I learned about him.
Ooooh, Mr. Sawadoga innovated the traditional zai method by adding manure and other biological matter to the holes! This put nutrients in the soil as well as helping even more with water retention and attracted termites whose tunnels helped loosen the compacted earth, all of which supported plant-growth like no zai before! Which increased water-retention even further! Oh excellent, excellent work!
I think it's obvious that the recent Ocarina of Time remake announcement has elicited varied reactions. But I can't help but find it interesting that some fans felt off put by how whimsical and fairytale-like the remake was presented in the Nintendo Direct.
It's not unfounded, though! Whether we're talking about the Hyrulean Civil War, or the Sheikah's role in the Shadow Temple, or the disturbing background surrounding the Lens of Truth, it is agreed among veteran players that Ocarina of Time is anything but lighthearted. So when it's advertised like the beginning of a Disney movie, it feels disingenuous.
And I think that's the point.
With Tears of the Kingdom, we saw Nintendo curate the gameplay to accommodate players who are new to the world of Legend of Zelda. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were trying to do it again with Ocarina of Time, one of the strongest and highly favored titles in the franchise.
Not to mention Ocarina of Time carries elements of the world renowned fairy tale Peter Pan — you have your fairies, your kids who never grow up, and of course the fight with the big, bad guy causing trouble. It's the perfect lure for players all around the world who are looking for a feel-good storybook game.
And once those players have committed to buying the game, that's when the fun starts.
