I need to write something else... hmm... By the way, my favorite scene from the second film is when Thorin decides to go down and check on Bilbo after his encounter with Smaug.

Thorin rushes out... and I mean, he runs to save Bilbo. He heard the roar; he knows the hobbit is alone with the dragon. At that moment, Thorin is a warrior, a leader, a friend. He is ready to cover his burglar. Driven by momentum, he runs to the rescue.

And then he sees it.

Gold.

Not just gold, but a sea of it. Poured, flowing, the ancestral cursed gold of his forefathers. And in that moment, they show his face in a close-up... His pupils dilate, Thorin stares intently, his gaze becomes glassy, he almost stops blinking, his face turns to stone — though just a second ago it was filled with worry. He isn't looking at Bilbo, he is looking through him... at the gold. At the Arkenstone, which isn't even nearby yet, but the craving for it is already awakening in his blood. The emotion is triggered by how quickly Thorin ceases to be himself. How quickly he is broken.

He shifts in a second. Thorin was running to save the hobbit who risked his life for him. And halfway there, he forgets why he came. There is no malice in his eyes at this moment. Only hunger. A suffocating, ancient, utterly honest hunger for what is killing you.

The sword that a second ago was a weapon of protection becomes a weapon of threat. He blocks Bilbo's path and points the blade at him. Because this sword is no longer for dragons. Now it is for those who stand between him and the treasure.

This is one of those scenes after which you can no longer view Thorin merely as a noble hero and leader. We see in him that very crack that will later shatter his soul.
