MILLER: This scene here was not in the script. LORD: Not even in the schedule. MILLER: In the schedule. LORD: But between takes Ryan said, “You know, Sandra’s a beautiful singer, I keep hearing her every time I go to my dressing room,” and we’re psychos not to ask her to sing in the movie and so we did, which is not the best thing to spring on an actor, and she said, “I’ll do it if I get to pick the song.” MILLER: And we said, “Unfortunately we’re only on this ship for another thirty six hours so, I’m sorry we didn’t give you time to practice this and rehearse.” And she said, “It’s all right.” And so she picked this with her daughter, this Harry Styles song. LORD: With her daughter. And the reaction you’re seeing from these people is genuine because they don’t know this is the song she’s gonna sing. MILLER: Yeah, we shot the reactions from the crowd first to give her sort of a chance to warm up, but it was gorgeous and everyone’s looks that were agog are real, like, “Oh my God.” And then listening to the lyrics of it and how apt they were for this moment for all these people, ended up becoming this central heart of the movie. And this is really her singing, no augmentation of any kind. She’s just great. LORD: I find this so moving and it’s such a victory for Sanda’s character and her performance, an opportunity for her to express she is not cold, that she feels deeply for these people, and wants them to succeed, and her love has to be suspended for her to do her job. And I think that is the tragedy of some people in power. They have to suspend themselves, their personal interests. MILLER: And so when, she’s sort of saying now to Ryan’s character— LORD: “Maybe someday.” MILLER: Yeah. LORD: “Maybe someday we could be close.” MILLER: Right. “But for right now, you get two minutes.” LORD: Yeah. It’s almost he gave her a dare, said— MILLER: “Can you have camaraderie?” LORD: “Are you a full human being?” and she comes down and says, “I am.” MILLER: And then says, “That is enough.” LORD: “I just have to choose not to be.” MILLER: And goes back to work.
it’s actually wild how terrified of the general public most usamericans are. like you don’t realize it if you’re someone who mostly walks and takes transit and spends a lot of time in populous public spaces but then you talk to one of the thousands of people that seemingly never set foot in any public space besides a parking garage or a starbucks and you suddenly understand why it’s so easy for fascist rhetoric about the dangerous alien to take root. this country’s median voter pretty much never interacts with strangers who aren’t their coworkers or people they met on dating apps
saw a post on instagram that was literally someone citing statistics saying public transit is one of the safest travel options out there and the comments were literally just “ummmmm op this is so ableist and misogynistic of you :) don’t you know the average public transit user is a dangerous violent criminal who wants to set you on fire :)))”
it must be so terrifying and sad to go through life convinced if you set foot outside your car in public or interact with people outside your nuclear family you’ll instantly be raped and robbed by the Evil Poors no wonder so many of these people are reactionary tar pits
Eternally relevant read is True Crime is Rotting Our Brains by Emma Berquist, a woman who actually experienced a (rare!) stranger-attack while just walking outside, and thinks that people who panic about this shit need to chill the fuck ouuuuuutt and also recognize how much they're using it to launder their bigotries
Edit: I've attempted to add this link at least three times and Tumblr is being stubborn, so let me try posting it on its own:
Emma Berquist
not just true crime but the news is in on it too, especially local and right wing but not exclusively.
Even outside of the news and true crime, people who live in the "nice" parts of a city constantly talk like this. In part because of the news but it's also an idea passed down from suburban family to suburban family. To keep them scared of Black people and poor people.
Constantly people talk about my city like it's a crime infested drug haven (god I fucking wish drugs were as easy to find here as people make it out to be) especially the people who live in the richer areas. People are terrified of the downtown area and the public transit because of this. I'm constantly being warned about going downtown at night or going ANYWHERE in this place alone. And yet. Nothing! My house got broken into once as a kid. ONCE. but everyone's acting like if you turn down one alleyway your life or your possessions will be taken from you.
And this is how they all talked BEFORE the true crime boom. In Canada. True crime just infected an already festering wound.

reading a post flaming a specific ass, very online take and not knowing what it's about At All is like lighting striking the ground right beside you
you met me at a very unmedicated time in my life
a lot of people assume psychosis hallucinations are super intense all-consuming horror movie shit like the memes about the hat man or always horrible debilitating things that make you dangerous to be around
but in my experience 95% of my hallucinations are getting spooked by very clearly hearing someone knocking on my door or calling my name from another room or hearing footsteps walking behind me which are "just" my brain recreating the horror of an abusive childhood
i *have* gotten the "bugs crawling all over me" hallucination once or twice though and yeah that one is exactly as terrible horrible as it sounds AUGH
(not trying to put you on blast specifically, you're just a good example to jump off of)
media and pop culture hypes up psychosis a lot as The Worst That Can Happen out of sanism, so even when you try and filter that cultural bias out you still assume it's based on something
when, no, psychosis is actually very simple: it's just hyperactive pattern matching. it's your brain's signal-to-noise ratio being off balance, it's seeing images in random static. it's not always this special uniquely big thing, it's in fact quite mundane a lot of the time.
no one is immune to psychosis, it's not purely the realm of the insane. anyone is one bad night of sleep or one bad case of food poisoning or one bad fever away from being just like me on my worst days.
and this, indeed, is why solidarity with the insane is so important: you, yes you too, are just one bad day from joining us, and no perceptions of being a "temporarily embarrassed sane person" will save you from the oppression of the psychiatric institution.

Independent bookstores, and booksellers, get a lifeline just when they need it most.
Independent bookstores around the country have a particularly clever lifeline, one perfectly suited to the unprecedented moment we find ourselves in. The strange part? It came into being just weeks before the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, and before the bookstores started closing up shop wondering if they’d reopen at all.
The lifeline in question is called Bookshop.
In simple terms, it’s a super clean, user-friendly online bookstore whose raison d’être is supporting independent bookstores — not simply with exposure or resources (though that’s certainly a factor), but with cold hard cash…
