Some news from this week in regards to attacks against the Catalan-Valencian culture and language:
The City Council of Alacant (the 2nd most populated city in the Valencian Country) has decided that from now on they are changing the spring school holidays to exclude local Valencian traditional days of celebration. Instead, they move it to Spanish Catholic days of celebration. Families will no longer be able to celebrate dia de la mona, instead they'll have free the early Holy Week. Another attempt to stop the tramission of the local culture and impose the Spanish culture.
In Catalonia, the supreme judge has dictated that all schools must now have their signs in Spanish. Until now, schools in Catalonia had the signs in Catalan (except in the Aran Valley, where they are in Aranese Occitan), as the language of education is Catalan (or Aranese Occitan). For the last decade, a series of laws by the Spanish government and rulings by the supreme judges have imposed a higher presence of Spanish outside the subject of Spanish, by law at least 25% of classes must be in Spanish, though in most schools the number is much higher. Some right-wing associations of parents have also sued schools and teachers if they considered there was too much Catalan, even when the amount was following the law. (Remember that it was already mandatory for all students to take the subject of Spanish Language and Literature, which has as many hours as Catalan Language and Literature, so it's not like Spanish isn't present). It is important to have Catalan in schools because it's the only way to guarantee that all people who have been raised here will know it. Everyone will learn Spanish as a first language outside of school anyway (since the streaming platforms, cinemas, internet, TV channels, etc. are almost exclusively in Spanish and there is the social pressure for Catalan speakers to address Spanish speakers in Spanish, but not the other way around), but since about 50% of Catalonia's young people were born outside Catalonia and Spain, it is necessary to welcome them into a school system where they can learn the local language. Without it, they won't, and Catalan will in a couple of generations suddenly become a minority. For a language that has also been persecuted, illegalized, and treated as inferior for most of its recent history, it is important that people can see the language in formal settings, see that it can be adequate for "important" stuff too, and not continue propagating the idea that "Spanish is for important/public things, Catalan is only to speak at home".
In the town l'AlcĂşdia de Crespins (also in the Valencian Country), the high school is named after the writer Isabel-Clara SimĂł, a key figure in Valencian literature. Now, the City Council has censored the name. They have removed the name, accusing the writer of being divisive (because she wrote in the Valencian-Catalan language and defended her right to do so).
Today, 7 more pro-independence people from Catalonia have been sentenced guilty for having taken part in a demonstration against the far-right Spanish supremacist group Sociedad Civil Catalana when they were hosting an event in a university campus under the excuse of doing a homage to Cervantes (Spanish writer seen as a national symbol). Even though the police report clearly states that it was the far-right Catalanophobic group who started shouting and pushing the counter-demonstrators trying to start a fight, the judge has considered that demonstrating against them is a criminal offense, and has added the plus of hate crime against Spain, because of the far-right's excuse of doing a homage to the symbol of Spanish culture Cervantes.
Amidst the protests against overtourism+gentrification in Mallorca, the Spanish military police has gone to the homes of two protestors and arrested them handcuffed, accusing them of being members of a criminal gang that targets real estate agencies. They are accused of having spray painted the façades of 5 real estate agencies, and the "proof" of their "criminal involvement" is that they had a banner that reads "SOS inhabitants. Stop overtourism!" at home. The military police have threatened that everyone who "commits crimes against Mallorca's touristic interests will be arrested". And yes, I'm including this in a post about attacks against culture because there can be no culture if the community is expelled from its home island to make way for rich Germans to buy second homes to leave empty half the year. 50% of houses in many towns of Mallorca are already owned by foreigners who don't live in the island. Just in the street where these two girls who have been arrested live, there are 5 real estate agencies. How does this make sense? Dictator Franco's plan was to turn Mallorca into a tourism colony, and years after his death the plan is still taking place.
Recently it feels like every week is like this. Little by little, Spanish nationalism tries to impose its homogenizing presence by excluding the places where the local language and culture is expressed. The things I've included in this post are not even the most impactful things that have happened lately, I would be depressed if I had to post it every time. Changing the names of towns and cities to Spanish names, changing the names of schools and theatres, not giving permissions to host traditional holidays on the streets, removing the requisite of knowing Catalan to work in even more high-education sectors of Catalonia, families having to appeal to court to let them name their children in Catalan because the state-worker doesn't want them to, forbidding Catalan authors from the literature school curriculum in the Valencian Country... The previous week even the company Aticco fired a worker speaking in Catalan to clients in their office in Barcelona, Catalonia's capital city (the firing notice stated that this was the reason). We need to stay firm and not let them erase our existence! Language rights and culture rights are human rights, even if they're not recognised by the law of an oppressor and imperialist state.
once again I am on the hunt for glasses for weird little freaks, but this time I've found some cool ones pretty easily! so in case anyone else is looking, I stumbled across some real weird and gay frames at all of these sites:
eyeshells aoolia zeelool lakoh vooglam lens alter
like, eyeshells in particular has a startlingly vast collection of asymmetric glasses:
(this isn't even all of them)
and also this steampunk nonsense that I love so fucking much and cannot justify spending any money on:
while aoolia has...tbh a lot of the frames the other sites have, but more expensive, but also, a collection of the gayest people you've ever seen:
though tbh not nearly as gay as whatever lens alter has going on:
and vooglam has uhhh...whatever this is!
huh.
(I can't vouch for any of these companies ofc, though I think I'll get something from at least one of them. ideally not the slime glasses, but hey!)
but honestly the absolute best thing I found in all of this is this site that makes vintage fashion, and which happened to have:
these replica victorian railway glasses like the bisexual guy in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter had, AND WHICH
you can even buy with prescription lenses, jesus fucking christ you have no idea how hard it is to not immediately drop $180 on this shit, I'm having to physically restrain myself, I want them so fucking bad
and hey, if you don't need prescription lenses, y'know what else you can buy from this site?
the glasses from national treasure đđ
anyway, I'm having a gr8 time! and now I know I can definitely find glasses that are weird enough for my very high standards
as a kid i always thought gotham was in michigan because i thought it was a midwestern city like chicago, and there was always shit going down at the pier or in abandoned factories and if michigan has anything itâs a lot of piers and abandoned factories. anyway turns out itâs probably in jersey.
other good reasons for gotham to be in michigan:
one of the most heavily forested states in the country with 20 million acres of forests oh my god poison ivy would be so powerful the second she got outside city limits fuck
thereâs 20 million acres of this and sheâs got plant powers no wonder they want her on lockdown
there are more than 6,000 shipwrecks in the great lakes how many supervillain origin stories is that good for
thereâs a whole class of freighter just for the great lakes
â63 commercial ports handled 173 million tons of cargo in 2006âł aka holy shit that is a lot of opportunities for boatcrimes
mr freeze has a pretty tragic origin story but if you had to put up with michigan winters and then some motherfucker showed up freezing the town outside of freezing season you would have no mercy
MOTHERFUCKER I JUST PUT MY SNOWBLOWER IN STORAGE DO I LOOK LIKE I NEED THIS SHIT RIGHT NOW
imagine batman giving someone directions by pointing to his hand
âwe believe killer croc is somewhere around hereâ he says pointing to the tip of his thumb
good fucking luck finding stats on abandoned buildings in michigan but holy shit are there a lot of them, no wonder theyâre always having fights in abandoned factories and empty warehouses
âkitty why are you including that map of the railroads like itâs relevantâ because when youâre trying to sleep and you hear a train in the distance itâs fucking spooky okay
i have no evidence that traincrime is an issue for batman iâm just saying the ambiance is there
michigan has plenty of abandoned theme parks for the joker to hijack
our most famous abandoned theme park is dinosaur themed so I GUESS WE KNOW WHERE HE GOT THE T-REX
we have a special kind of ice cream called superman ice cream and i think bruce would be really bitter about it and thatâs hilarious
there are nine different species of bat in michigan and they have all lived in my kitchen at some point
michigan is full of mines both abandoned and active and bats love them
put an abandoned train station next to and abandoned mine and you have a totally plausible CRIMEZONE
and none of this is getting into the most compelling evidence
put a city in michigan and watch how fast no one gives a fuck
gotham, MI needs batman because who the fuck else is going to help
batman please save us from the cops and the state government
I always thought that Gotham was Chicago and Metropolis was New York City.
thatâs what i thought but apparently metropolis is new york during the day and gotham is new york at night which means the dc universe has three new yorks which i think even new yorkers can agree is too many
here are some more michigan batman facts:
we already have evil clowns
when i was a kid i used to slide down the slopes made by snowplows on my stomach which i feel is relevant to the penguin
thereâs always a ton of cars from the 30s driving around gotham which makes perfect sense if itâs in michigan because thatâs when we made cars and weâre not over it
rick snyder and his emergency managers are basically supervillains and i want batman to punch them
michigan is closer to kansas which means bruce can visit clarkâs parents and then theyâre emailing clark about what a nice young man he is and thereâs nothing clark can do about it
batman vs superman: the deep dish debate
âwho would name a city bludhavenâ well weâve already got bad axe and colon and gaylord and climax and grim and hell and frankenlust and gore and thatâs just the first half of the alphabet
if someone said that a city in michigan had been hijacked by an evil clown that was only stopped when a man in an animal costume kicked him in the face would you even blink
this is meadow brook hall in rochester mi
this is the charles t fisher house
hereâs the james scott residence
welcome to michigan hope u like houses with turrets and fucked up clowns and evil men poisoning the water
I feel like Gotham could also be Cleveland/Northern Ohio, for all of the reasons listed, PLUS the time the Cuyahoga River *caught on fire* due to the pollution of it.

One of the best letters Iâve ever seen just popped up on my Facebook memories. Still makes me laugh.
As today is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, itâs a great time to revisit Dinah from Devonâs memory of this historic event. And yes, still makes me laugh.
Today is the 54th anniversary of the moon landing, but Dinahâs diary entry is still absolutely magnificent.
57th anniversary of the moon landing and the best diary entry in the history of diary entries. Sit down Samuel Pepys, itâs over. UGH.

i think one of the best parts about being a teenager in the early to mid 2010s was that cigarettes were definitely not cool anymore and vapes hadnât popularized yet so my lungs made it out of my peak impressionable years relatively unscathed
re: my last post, I know it seems very impressive that my book is in a lot of stores! but I make less than someone working full-time at McDonalds. I am not a powerful individual, I'm just another trans person online writing niche queer books, and trying to survive off it.
COVER REVEAL! our talented designer, Miss Nat Mack, had to fit in a lot of discordant imagery such as: spider centaurs, medieval times, beetle aliens, goddesses, spaceships, tentacled brain slugs, and of course, m/m erotiscism.
the book's not out until next March, so pre-order links are still going live, but I'll list the early ones under the readmore:

itâs a beautiful day to check out a book from the library
its a beautiful day to return a book to the library unread after it auto renews 3 times
The library says thank you for boosting our circulation stats and the book will still be here later if you want it another time <3
âWhile bats can only sense the outer shapes and textures of their targets, dolphins can peer inside theirs. If a dolphin echolocates on you, it will perceive your lungs and your skeleton. It can likely sense shrapnel in war veterans and fetuses in pregnant women. It can pick out the air-filled swim bladders that allow fish, their main prey, to control their buoyancy.
It can almost certainly tell different species apart based on the shape of those air bladders. And it can tell if a fish has something weird inside it, like a metal hook. In Hawaii, false killer whales often pluck tuna off fishing lines, and âtheyâll know where the hook is inside that fish,â Aude Pacini, who studies these animals, tells me. âThey can âseeâ things that you and I would never consider unless we had an X-ray machine or an MRI scanner.â
This penetrating perception is so unusual that scientists have barely begun to consider its implications. The beaked whales, for example, are odontocetes that look dolphin-esque on the outsideâbut on the inside, their skulls bear a strange assortment of crests, ridges, and bumps, many of which are only found in males.
Pavel Golâdin has suggested that these structures might be the equivalent of deer antlersâshowy ornaments that are used to attract mates. Such ornaments would normally protrude from the body in a visible and conspicuous way, but thatâs unnecessary for animals that are living medical scanners.â
-Ed Yong, An Immense World
Cetacean echolocation is one of those things that boggles your mind once you really start to think about the implications. They can see each others' hearts beating fast with fear or excitement. They can see if another dolphin is healthy, or pregnant; how the fetus is doing; if they have ingested debris. Their echolocation is also incredibly precise: a bottlenose dolphin could discriminate between cilinders differing in wall thickness by just 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) from 8 meters away!! And they certainly notice when something is off.
I'm not sure if I ever shared this story before here, but in Curacao, when I was allowed to assist in a guest interaction programme, there was suddenly consternation in the pool behind us. A guest had entered the water and the dolphins were going crazy, paying no heed to the trainers anymore. The lead trainer that was with me gave the dolphins to me to watch over while she went to help. When she came back she told me what had happened. The guest that had caused so much uproar had left the water again and was asked if he had done anything to upset the dolphins. He hadn't, and he couldn't imagine what was wrong... until he mentioned he had a pacemaker. The younger dolphins in the pool had never seen someone with a pacemaker before and apparently it rocked their world.
It was such a wild experience, and offered such a cool insight into how dolphins experience their world. I'll never forget it.
Bridgerton hot people: *busy making out in various gazebos and library locations*
Me, watching: is this estate entailed or under a strict settlement? If itâs the product of a strict settlement, how was that disclosed to the viscount given he was of minority age (and thus barred from contracting) at his fatherâs death? Did he later perpetuate the strict settlement in his lineal favor despite having zero obligation to do so given that he now stands as legal fee tail owner? Maybe he just saw it as a way to perpetuate the power of the family and bar against less successful descendants wasting the estate resource, all at the direct, deliberate expense of barring his siblings and their families from a landed inheritance? If thatâs the case, why are the younger Bridgerton sons such desirable matches among the gentry?? But maybe thatâs not an issue, since all of his younger brothers seemingly have independent allowance, and if thatâs generated from the family estate, this must be a strict settlement with a life estate income provision for siblings - def NOT an entailment. Is that why these younger brothers are considered good matches despite being unlanded untitled gentlemen in need of professions? Or maybe their motherâs marriage settlement provided for their independent allowance should their father die?? Are they to obtain their own property without title???
Bridgerton hot people: *have now actively started getting down in said gazebos and library locations*
Me, flipping through a facsimile of a 1788 English law textbook: on that note, why are the featheringtons kicked out of what appears to be an owned home by a male cousin upon their fatherâs death? Was their estate a strict settlement that benefited a cousin instead of a descendant?? Why would their grandfather force their father to settle away from his own descendancy line, with no allowance or dowry provided for the girls? But if itâs entailed and thus out of their hands (also explaining the lack of allowance), why didnât their father employ common recovery to undo the entailment???
Bridgerton hot people, looking at me through the television: lady, you realize this show is just cosplay **** with extra steps, right?
Strange racists and homophobes on the internet seem to have access to an alternate way cooler version of TV than me. "every white character on TV is in an interracial relationship" "every show has a gay couple in it" "main characters keep having to secretly be bisexual and nonbinary" "every show has gratuitous full frontal nudity" like damn promise?? What channel???
as a black gay person real like where y'all be finding this stuff pass the name
for real though, those DO NOT WATCH OR YOU'LL CORRUPT YOUR CHILDREN lists put out by conservative christian family groups is where I find all the stellar tv shows. Like, shit I didn't know half of those existed, thanks for finding them for me, gonna go watch 30 hours of gay tv now!
I think I know how this works.
For personal context, before I went to the '98 Burning Man festival, one of the things I'd read from a couple different journalists was that "everybody" runs around naked. Which, fine by me, I'd already spent a lot of time in clothing-optional spaces, I'm not fanatic about it but it's nice.
So I got there early and set up a public shade structure on one of Black Rock City's main roads and spent most of each afternoon just watching the crowds go by. I don't remember seeing more than one actually naked person the whole week. I think a topless woman passed by my intersection maybe every half an hour, sometimes once an hour. So why in the hell were people, normally pretty smart and observant writers, coming away with the impression that everybody was naked?
Then I remembered an unrelated passage from Joel Garreau's great book about the history of the outer-ring suburbs, Edge City. Mall developers told him flat-out that they tried to keep the crowds in their malls less than 5% black. Not because they themselves were racist, but because they had determined, experimentally, that if more than 5% of the people in the mall are black, the median white shopper will wrongly describe the mall as at least half black, as mostly black. And not a few of them would describe it, at 6% black, as a mall where "only black people go." Why?
Because, emotionally, they were still upset over the last one when the next one came into view.
Same as the journalists describing Black Rock City as all naked. Same as the right-wing religious culture warriors describing television as entirely mixed-race and gender non-conforming. Not because it's even vaguely true, we know that, but because they haven't gotten over their discomfort over the last one by the time the next one comes along. The anger, not the stimulus, is the part that's continuous, so their mind lies to them that it's "all" the thing they can't get over.
Similar effect for the presence/proportion of women in things, by the way: https://health.howstuffworks.com/mental-health/human-nature/perception/how-17-equals-496-the-amazing-multiplying-women.htm

The 2026 Gender Census is now open!
[ survey.gendercensus.com ]
The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
Itâs short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed Iâll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like weâre part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers whoâd be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesnât fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!
[ Link to survey ]
PS: You can see some regularly-updated statistics about incoming data here, with lots of demography and graphs to peruse!

âmy father is a boy and my mother is a girl so iâm mixedâ is the funniest possible response to someone asking your gender and it came from 6â5 Viking footballer and notable weird little guy Erling Haaland on a Snapchat
comedians can only dream of writing something this funny
