In one of my film classes last semester we had to tell a story in 3 pictures for a mini assignment so my friend and I did this
Happy 10 year anniversary to this post!
Me: Fuck, the paper towels I want are on the top shelf.
The Sir David Attenborough That Lives In My Brain: Being smaller-than-average presents an added challenge to foraging ... but necessity is the mother of invention. A little creativity turns a baguette into a tool, and voilĂ --
(paper towel roll falls on my face)
Sir David Attenborough, pleasantly: Success.
Every morning, the queen asked her magic mirror to show her the most beautiful person in the world.
The mirror replied "To whom?"
"The miller who made the flour for my bread," the queen would say, or "Whoever spun the thread my shawl was made of".
The mirror would show her, and she'd be amazed.
The first time, she says "To me," and the mirror dutifully shows her her reflection. And she is pleased.
The second time, she says "To the King," and she is pleased to see herself once more.
The third time, she says "To the Royal Advisor," and is once more satisfied to see herself.
The fourth time, she says "To the scribe who takes the King's letters." She is shown the man's wife. And she seethes, but quiets herself, for it is only right that a man loves his wife.
The fifth time, she says "To the Court Wizard," and is shown the man's departed mother as he remembers her from his youth, radiant and smiling and warm and larger than life.
The tenth time, she says "To the Stable Master," and is shown the fastest horse in the stable, majestic and free as the wind even in captivity
"To the baker," she is shown the man's daughter, young and adorable and full of joy and laughter.
"To the artist who did my portrait," she is shown a painting of a woman done by the man's teacher, who he still looks up to now that he is well established himself.
"To the Royal Knight," she is surprised but not displeased to see the castle's entire guard force in the middle of doing drills.
The one hundredth time she asks the mirror, and it asks her "to whom?" she once again says, "To me." And she does the same the one hundred and second, and again and again and again.
It is a different person each time, and they are all beautiful.

I gotta admit I'm with Han on this one.
Nothing will be funnier than the fact that in JLU Lex Luthor knows the Flash's face but can't do anything about it because he has no idea who the fuck that is
âLex youâve had a difficult day
Well
If nothing else I can learn the Flashâs secret identityâ
(Unmasks)
â...........................................
I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THIS ISâ
It communicates so much about Lex's worldview, too. This, coupled with the story where a Lexcorp employee or mad science underling devises Superman's secret identityâand Lex refuses to believe it?
Lex Luthor is someone who cannot comprehend people having great power and not using it for their own benefit. It isn't just that forensic scientist Wally West is not a highly visible figure, it's that Lex sees a man with incredible abilities running around in a mask and draws conclusions about what the Flash does with his powers on the sly. It's that he views the world and its peoples in terms of accomplishments, in terms of what you do with what you have versus what is handed to you. It is that evil cannot comprehend good.
Lexâs whole paranoia about aliens and superhumans in general is also because of this because he literally because judges them on his own awful standards
He knows what he woud do if he had such powers so he assumes they must actually hate humanity and want to destroy us/conquer us because if Lex had their powers thatâs absolutely what he would do with them
I will never be over how excited Rocky was to get Grace's laptop. I mean, if I went on a mission because my planet was dying and then I met an alien who helped me save it and he also gave me the collected knowledge of his species in an advanced little machine, like, he gave that to ME. ALL THE KNOWLEDGE HIS SPECIES HAS GATHERED SO FAR, sure, they don't know how to turn Xenon into a solid but they know about relativity and radiation and movies and so many amazing things I could have never imagined before I went on this trip. And he just handed it to me because we're FRIENDS, I didn't even have to ask him for it, he just did it. Without hesitation. He didn't even tell me "This is for your planet.", he said "This is for you." Like, hello? Can you imagine coming home after decades, your crew is dead, but you made it and you don't just bring the solution for the whole "the planet is dying" thing, you bring the collected knowledge of an advanced alien species?!?!? And it was a personal gift.
The happy little dance and grabby hands were fully appropriate.
Thank god they decided to make more
Wow
Dolly Parton has really been hard at work
But In doing soâŚshe created her biggest enemyâŚJolene
okay, you know what? Running away shouldnât be a crime. It shouldnât be dangerous, either. Any kid should be able to leave their parents if they want, for any reason. No Iâm not kidding.
âBut Rue, where will these kids stay? Do you want them on the streets?â
of course not. In an ideal world, a kids would have multiple adults other than their parents they could look to for care, but I recognize that that will never be a reality for every single child. So: youth shelters, if they have nowhere else to go. There should be clean, warm shelters where anyone under 18 can stay for as long as they need, no questions asked. (And of course shelters that arenât just for kids, but weâre talking about youth rights right now)
âBut Rue,â I hear you say, âwhat if some moody teenager runs away after an argument?â
First of all, Iâd rather a thousand moody teenagers run away than one abused child be trapped. Second, so what if one does? A kid needs time away from their parents, so they leave. The vast majority of them will get some time to cool down and then go back home, and if they donât want to go back, period? Then nine times out of ten, they have a good reason. (Because yes, as hard as it is for you to believe, kids are humans who have common sense.)
âOkay, but what about the one time out of ten the kid doesnât have a good reason?â
Then the kid doesnât have a good reason. It doesnât change anything. If someone wants to break up with their partner because of something stupid, you wouldnât say they legally shouldnât be able to. (And if you would, then youâre just a bad person.) No one should have to be in a relationship, romantic or otherwise, that they donât want to be in.

Inside you are two housecats...
In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, thereâs Dr. Joseph MâBenga (Babs Olusanmokun), I donât know as much about him since the 4th and 5th seasons arenât out yet, but heâs cool. Thereâs also a Black nurse, ensign Dana Gamble, they have a father-son relationship. Dr. MâBenga also has a daughter, she creates a fantasy world for one episode, The Elysian Kingdom iirc. Dr. MâBenga is as fleshed out as all the other characters except for maybe Pike, Batel, and Noonien-Singh. SNW generally does a good job with its characters of color, it has good representation in that direction.
^ his wedding guest outfit. I gotta say the costume designers have been amazing
^ in the fantasy episode
bonus Lt. Nyota Uhura in the same episode bc her outfit rocks and I could also yap about her for a long time but Iâm assuming you know about her (or at least her when played by Nichelle Nichols bc sheâs pretty famous) v
So Handsome! That was a good color combo for him. And aight now! That actress is ACTING! The INTENSITY! I LOVE IT!
Nichelle Nichols (December 28, 1932 - )
âUhura never had another name during the series. One of the fan writers wrote âUpendaâ - which means âpeaceâ in Swahili, I understand â not officially, but in some of their fan writings. And it sort of took hold. But when they were going to do the official history of Star Trek in a published book, the writer called Gene and asked him was âUhuraâ her first name or her last name? Gene said, âWell, Nichelle and I never decided.â We always leaned towards it being her last name because itâs taken from the Swahili âuhuruâ which means freedom. So it would sort of be like the same as âFreeman.â So he said, âYou can make it her last name.â The writer said, âWhat about her first name? Iâve come up with one in Swahili. Itâs Nyota.â Gene said, âI canât give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so youâll have to call her and get her permission.â So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, âI have a name and itâs Nyota.â I said, âThatâs quite beautiful. What does it mean?â He said, âIt means âstarâ.â I said, âYou can have my permission!â So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: âstar of freedom and peaceâ. I like that.â   â NICHELLE NICHOLS
this is an obscure ask but OMG you co-wrote an episode of The Transformers!!! you did Webworld with the late, great Len Wein. Webworld is crazy, that's the one where Galvatron's insanity has his teammates drop him off in a therapy planet and he drives the living core crazy. do you have any memories working on it? what was it like co-writing with Len Wein? Thanks, a very excited transformers fan
You know, queries about this come in every now and then. Soâbecause this response from last year is pretty detailed, and I think will answer all your questionsâI'm just gonna paste it in here. đ
...About my work on Transformers G1: Developmentally speaking itâs kind of a complicated story, so bear with me here while I set the scene.
In 1985 I was a pretty busy gal. The Door Into Shadow had just published. Deep Wizardry had gone to press for publication in Delacorteâs fall-â85 schedule. My first computer game, Star Trek: The Kobayashi Alternative, launched (in the Rainbow Room on top of 30 RockâŚ) in the summer of '85. I was then scripting my first comics work for DC (the âDouble Blindâ two-parter and âThe Last Wordâ). And after taking a brief breathing space from four or five yearsâ worth of animation work across a number of shows (scroll down here for details), Iâd just turned in an episode of My Little Pony.
In memory all this work tends to get tangled together somewhat (which is probably no surprise). One thread that shows persistently through the tangle, though, is how much time I was spending in New York at a time when I was living in Philadelphia.
A surprising amount of that has to do with the research surrounding Deep Wizardry, which required specialized materials not readily available anywhere else. Because I had a contract for that book, in early 1984 I applied for (and was granted) access to the Frederick Lewis Allen Memorial Room at the main branch of the New York Public Library. As a result, for the guts of a year I was âup in townâ at least every other week or so, sometimes for two or three days at a timeâtaking notes from the Woods Hole oceanographic resources there, drawing copies of them (like this one) when xerography wasnât available or when otherwise necessary, andâwhen there was timeâwriting.
But on those stay-overs my evenings were my own, and fortunately there were some really nice people to meet up with, every so often. Back when 666 5th Avenue (now 660) was DC Comicsâ home, a lot of the writing and editorial talent had a habit of heading down to street level and around the corner on Friday nights, to meet up and relax at the bar in a local steakhouse on the W. 52nd Street side (long gone now, alas). Thatâs almost certainly where I first met Len Weinâmost likely introduced to him by my editor on the Trek comics at DC, Bob Greenbergerâand we quickly got to be friends. Each of us was interested in the writing (and kinds of writing) the other was doing, so we had lots to chat about.
Now during this period Iâd recently finished work on that My Little Pony script. A production company called Sunbow was then handling the screen side of the property, along with shows based on various other IPs. To this day I canât remember who it was over there who said to me, âSo listen, now that youâre done with that, weâve got some slots unfilled on another showâwould you be interested in doing a Transformers?â My answer was naturally âSure, why not?â*
So shortly I was talking story, in a general way, with my new story editor over there, Steve Gerber. The thought of doing something a bit personal, and getting into some of the charactersâ heads a bit, was as usual on my mind. The idea of getting Galvatron some psychiatric care had already crossed my mind at that point⌠though I had on first impulse pushed that (for the time being) onto the back burner due to possibly being a little too âon the nose.â
At some point pretty early on in this process, though, a different idea hit me. Len was plainly perfectly cut out for animation storytelling (as other comics writers have also been: but the fit had rarely seemed quite so perfect, to me at least). And heâd have a party with this, I thought. Why not invite him along for the ride and let him get a feel for how itâs done?
So I said to him (as Tom Swale had once said to me years back), "Hey, you wanna write a cartoon?" And to my great pleasure Len promptly said âYes!â And having cleared this team-up with Steve Gerber, we dove in as co-writers.
Collaboration can sometimes be a rocky road, but Iâve always been lucky in mine, and that lucky streak held true with Len. I have rarely had a co-writer who right out of the starting gate was more willing to stretch hard to get things right, and one who was more effortlessly funny⌠even when the humor turned dark (as it repeatedly did in this episode). He unquestionably brought things to that script that I wouldnât have thought to try, or would have been nervous about my ability to pull off, solo.
âŚSo after a couple/few weeks we turned âWebworldâ in, the checks cleared, and we both went on to other things... while remaining good friends all the while: and it was @petermorwood's and my great pleasure to have Len as a houseguest here. The two of them got along famously, another case of senses of humor meshing perfectly. ...But that episode keeps coming up as many peopleâs favorite⌠and I canât say that I mind a bit. đ (If you want to look at it, the whole episodeâs online: just follow the link.)
BTW, because people do ask âWhy does Lenâs name appear first on the credits screen?â, the answerâs simple: Because I insisted. He was the newbie here, after all. I thought it only right that the junior partner in this medium should be put in pride of place on that credit, his very first time out (and if you scroll right down to the bottom of his IMDb page, you'll find it there, the very first entry). ...Noting here that I've routinely done the same with Peter, for anyone whoâs been watching. Collaborator of thirty-plus years he may have been, but heâs still always been newer at this than I am. đ
In any case, I wear the joint credit with Len with great pride. Itâs an honor to be associated with someone who went on to becomeâentirely separate from his already-stellar career in comicsâone of the strongest and most prolific animation writers of the last few decades.
âŚSo thatâs how it happened. (And as for the story, which pops up here and there, of how Bob G. and I dragged Len out of that restaurant one night and made him buy his first computer [an early Macintosh]: thatâs true too.) đ
*Also, after this they asked me the same question again, but this time about a show called GloFriends. Same result, due to the house rule: âIf someone offers you work, take it!â :)
<3 Webworld is one of my all time fave episodes btw <3
It's so good
For those who haven't watched it...go watch it....Tubi has the whole show for free and you don't even have to sign up if you don't want to, you can just go on their site and watch and enjoy it....
But for those who want a plot synopsis, it's literally a story where the Decepticons are getting more and more frustrated with the fact that Galvatron is whacked out of his gourd and frequently attacks them as often as he does the Autobots....and insist that Cyclonus take him to Space Therapy
And Cyclonus is like "Well I can't have the Decepticons doing a mutiny against my Toxic Yaoi Robot Husband" so yeah, he takes Galvatron to Space Therapists to try and get him to stop beating the crap out of his own soldiers all the time and Stop Acting Crazy XD
Just wanting to add that this is an excellent and accurate synopsis. đ
But also... "prev", as we say around here:
#what the fuck #diane duane is on tumblr?! #diane duane whom i knew also wrote star trek books #?! #her?!!! #HERE?! #diane duane #diane duane?!
Yeah, here. Been here since 2008.
And have done some things besides Star Trek. Like these...
The home of Diane Duane's award-winning LGBTQ/polyam fantasy series
...and these...
A different kind of wizardry. A different kind of wizard.
...and assorted other stuff.
...The novels are here. You can also view the shorter fiction, the comics, and the other film and TV media separately.
...I try to stay busy. đ
HTH!
<3 BOOSTING ALL THIS <3
Also I am glad I am a good synopsis-iser <3
I did like the Young Wizards books when I was younger, though I have been hesitant to revisit them. Thereâs this book in the series that I worry would hurt me, now that I am older and more aware. I donât remember all the specifics, but I think (and what little I remember is that it is more complicated than that) that a character suppresses his Autism to become a wizard, and thatâs the happy ending. Again, I havenât revisited it in at least a decade if not two, I havenât even checked Wikipedia, I might be misremembering some details. (My brain is weirdly selective about what I remember) I just ⌠I hate how much I mask as is, but to give up a part of yourself? Not something physical but your mind, your last refuge? I fear lobotomies more than anything and itâs just, gosh I hope I am misremembering. Thatâs why I donât look it up, even if it was as bad as I fear, if I donât fact check, I am still in the ambiguity
Reblogging this because it needs to be dealt with. My apologies for the delay: I missed this earlier.
When I realized (partly from reader feedback) that I had been working from bad data on this book, I rewrote much of it.
This may be the best of the links that will assist you in assessing what I did:
Meanwhile: my apologies again... for getting it wrong the first time around.

You canât call yourself a leftist if you hate children tbh, like you can choose not to have them or be around them, but outright hating the most marginalised group of people in the world who have absolutely no power or control over the most basic parts of their lives and bodies is a dangerous mentality to have and you need to grow the fuck up and get out of your edgy phase and start treating everyone around you like human beings, even the ones that piss you off.
Like the older I get, the more empathy I have for children. Imagine living on this planet for less than a decade and having to figure out every single thing from scratch, only for the people around you to treat you like a living doll and constantly invalidate your feelings because you havenât learned how to express them beyond screaming at the top of your lungs, like youâd be having meltdowns in the grocery store as well. The least you can do is offer them some grace, everything is so fucking confusing and scary and overwhelming and theyâre not able to communicate that properly and no one around them is explaining shit, and they are constantly at the mercy of whether or not the terrifyingly giant adults around them CHOOSE to be kind like genuinely put yourself in the situation of a child and tell me you wouldnât also be freaking the fuck out.
The way society treats children is borderline inhumane, and you have the audacity to call them hellspawn crotch-goblins for screaming a little bit too loud or daring to be in the same vicinity as you.
I do also believe that hating children is a sign of underlying ableism, because most of the justifications of hating children comes down to âtheyâre annoyingâ or âthey donât know how to actâ or âtheyâre grossâ and if you are unable to treat people who lack social skills, who make loud or repetitive noises, who are incontinent etc. with basic respect and dignity, then whatâs the difference between hating children and hating disabled adults that share the traits you find so irritating?
