i have a question, is it okay to self diagnose? iām wondering if i have adhd but when i think that i feel like iām being a āpick meā but when i want to see a professional it costs way too much money. is it okay? what do I do to help myself figure it out?
self diagnosing is absolutely okay. professional psychiatric/mental health diagnoses are so incredibly hard to get and expensive, not everyone has the privilege to get diagnosed. im self diagnosed myself. generally the only thing i'd say in general: more research is always better. look through diagnostic criteria, talk to other ppl with adhd, etc. self diagnosing is always ok but you still want to make sure you do research.
Autistic support needs labels (Part 1)
If youāre seeing this post, youāve probably heard about āsupport needs labelsā for autistic people. Throughout this post, I will be abbreviating the term āsupport needs labelsā as SNL.
What are they?
Support needs labels are ways to indicate the way an autistic person navigates the world; they have been presented as an alternative to āfunctioning labelsā and āseverity labelsā. SNLs include low support needs, medium support needs, and high support needs.
These labels are based on how the autistic person experiences autism: how many aids the autist needs, which accommodations they need, how independent they can be, which ADLS/iADLs they need support for.
The biggest distinction between SNLs and other labels that attempt to ārateā someoneās autisticnesss is that support needs labels arenāt focused on how well the autistic person conforms to allistic-normative society. SNLs arenāt about how the autistic person appears to an outsider, theyāre about what the autistic person needs.
What does each term mean?
Good question! In my following posts, I will be discussing what each specific label means. When Iāve finished, I will link them here.
Part 2: Low Support Needs
Part 3: Medium Support Needs
Part 4: High Support Needs
If neurotypicals are so good at picking up hints, why do they never seem to notice you leaning away when they try to touch you?
If neurotypicals are so empathic and social, why do they not notice when they are mean as fuck?
If neurotypicals are so adaptable to change, why wonāt they make accommodations for neurodivergent people?
If neurotypicals are so good at recognizing faces, why are we so invisible to them?
I really wish ocd intrusive thoughts weren't so stigmatized and misunderstood even in "anti ableism" communities because the thoughts alone can ruin your entire life. You see yourself as unsafe to even people you love--I know of a mother who refused to be around her own children because one of her intrusive thoughts was that she's a pedophile and a danger to children. Like this shit makes you want to die but you can't talk about it because everyone reinforces the idea that you are in fact actually dangerous which is...already what people with intrusive thoughts think about themselves. No one knows how horrific ocd actually is to deal with because no one can talk about it. It's even worse for abuse victims whose intrusive thoughts are related to abuse THEY experienced...anyways.

internalised ableism and self-doubt be like:
internal issues? Iām faking because look how well Iām hiding the fact that things are bad! if it was that bad, more people would notice!
external issues? Iām faking because look how dramatic Iām being! Iām being too loud and selfish and disruptive on purpose!
thereās no winning. itās ridiculous

Autistic people (self diagnosed included) rb this with a special interest in the tags and a fun fact about it
im going to say something that white neurodivergents are not gonna like
being hyperfixated on racist media/content creators is literally not an excuse lol. you being able to like something that is racist has everything to do with you being white and is still privileged. yes hyperfixations can be somewhat random and seem "uncontrollable" but they dont exist in a vaccuum!!! you still benefit from supporting racist media/people and having adhd or whatever the fuck is no excuse LOL

Online autistic communities/advocates really seem to forget that it isnāt exclusively āuwu cute hyperfixation hehe stim break hand flap.ā
Youāre not advocating for autism if you donāt include the weird kids who have strange interests and are socially awkward, but not in the cute way. The ones people often describe as creepy, or call freaks.
Or the nonverbal special education students who groan and scream in the hallways at school while people in classrooms hold back laughter because for some reason they find it funny.
Or the violent aggressive autistic people who cause damage to themselves and everything around them at one minor inconvenience and will never live independently.
Or autistic adults with picture perfect families and lives, who do not relate to the autistic ācultureā thatās now been portrayed online.
Or autistic people who donāt benefit from stim toys, who donāt look at it as a huge factor in their lives, who went through therapy to help them learn skills that they struggled with.
If you donāt advocate for the scary cases and symptoms, the weird autistic people, the incapable autistic people, youāre not advocating for autism. Itās a spectrum and itās not going to be pretty sometimes. If you donāt acknowledge and include those cases, especially if youāre autistic yourself, can you really say youāre advocating for autism, or is it just yourself?
When you refer to the autistic community, youāre talking about them too. Remember that.
I agree this some pepole think i am funny in a bad way because i' cant cotrol my body and i have else freinds that gets call creepy and bullyed because them not do cute things and i think more respect autistic comunity
Ever been sitting in the quiet, but it's the wrong kind of quiet???
Like... The overhead light is too loud kind of wrong. Or you can hear the tv is on, even though the screen is blank.
Questions to help break through aĀ āI canāt do the Thingā wall
Iām not doing the Thing, but if I wereĀ to do the Thing, what would be the first bit to tackle?
eg: Iām having trouble washing up. Iāll start by just getting all the dishes into one place and emptying the drying rack.
Often, you might find that the first bit was what you were stuck on, and now youāve done that, you feel ready to do the whole Thing. But if not, thatās fine, youāve set things up to be easier later! Similarly:
What can I do to set things up for when Iām ready?
eg: I need to apply for a job vacancy Iāve seen. That feels really overwhelming and I donāt have the energy right now. I will create an email with the correct address in and open the files Iāll need for tomorrow.
Half-done is half more than you had before, and it will make things easier when you come back. Reduce the friction and complexity as much as you can.
Will this task actually be any easier if I do it later?
eg: I need to re-spray my waterproofs. Itās sunny today but itās going to be raining all week, so it would actually be easier to do it now so I can do it outside and let them air.Ā āKay FINE, guess I will.
or: I want to make progress on my Creative Endeavour. Iām having a lot of trouble focussing at the moment but tomorrow Iāll be better rested and my Creative Group will be meeting. It will genuinely be easier then so I should stop worrying about it for now.
Sometimes, you realise that it would legitimately be easier to do a task later. Other times, you realise it would suck more to put it off, and that can help give you a nudge to do it sooner. It also helps reframe it in your head fromĀ āwill I do the Thing?ā toĀ āwhen will I do the Thing?ā
These are some questions that I use myself and I thought Iād share them to see if theyāre handy for anyone else!

Happy Autistic Pride Day! I wish all my fellow autistic people a wonderful day today!
I agree with anon that said the Membrane family are all autistic AND wanna add that so is Zim and the reason why all the random side charactersā actions seem so incomprehensible is because theyāre neurotypical and weāre seeing everything thru Zimās or Dibās eyes so ofc their weird, confusing social rituals donāt make sense
YESS big agree, great take
