Fun fact! Water actually turns āblood redā when it is contaminated by sulfur creating sulfuric acid. And scientists have discovered that around the time of the plagues a volcano went off that disturbed Egyptās environment. So the plagues are scientifically proven. The other parts of the plagues are explained by the sulfuric acid river making the animals leave the river and escaping into the human population.
WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME THE PLAGUES WERE PROVEN
if anyone wants a full list heres how they happened:
basically they all stem from a massive eruption of a volcano on the island of santorini off the coast of greece. the ash then floated over to egypt which kickstarted the plagues
1) blood: the ash carried the mineral cinnabar, which has the capability of turning water red
2) frogs: the ash also had many toxic and acidic substances so naturally, all the frogs are gonna flee the river
3) lice: given what was going on insects would have burrowed into dead animals/peoples skin and laid eggs, which then hatched
4) beasts: everything is getting poisoned from the ash and toxins, causing animals to freak the fuck out/die
5) pestilence: toxins again
6) boils: the ash would have caused storms that carried acid rain which when it fell, would irritate peoples skin causing boils
7) hail: the storm again
8) locusts: again with the insects and the amount of dead bodies and such which attract more insects. a lotta insects basically.
9) darkness: the ash covered the sky, blocking out the sun
10) slaying of the first born: given that childrenās bodies were found in higher numbers than others, some archeologists think they may have been sacrificed to stop all the destruction, but they arenāt 100% sure about that. this is just me but I would say another possibility is that babies/kids are a lot more susceptible to toxins and shit, so while an adult may have been fine or gotten a bit sick, it might have been very dangerous/deadly for kids or babies
the volcano would also attest for the parting of the sea weirdly enough. the red sea was in fact the āreedā sea, and was very shallow, probably waist deep or so. given the amount of shit dumped into the ocean from the volcano, this wouldve caused a tsunami to head towards egypt. the water would get sucked out from the reed sea right before the tsunami hit, letting people pass it easily, then the actual tsunami would hit, fuckin up anyone who tried to follow.
another theory is that the red water was caused by algae, which would cause the frogs and stuff to jump out as well. the algae also carried substances toxic to animals so if they ingested any theyād get sick and die, so more insects. in this theory there was a sand storm coincidentally that caused the rest
some sources: X X
The volcano wasnāt ON Santorini - it WAS Santorini, then called Thera. It completely blew away the Minoan settlements on the island and was one of the largest eruptions in human history.Ā
The tsunamis from the Theran eruption devastated Crete, weakening the then-powerful Minoan civilization, leaving them open to being invaded by the Mycenaeans.
The volcanic winter it created devastated crops in China leading to the fall of the Xia Dynasty.Ā
The abrupt and catastrophic loss of the people of Thera may have also inspired the myths about Atlantis.
this is blowing my fucking mind
It all comes full circle
the inherent eroticism of the university library after dark
you ever like go to make a post on here but as youāre typing suddenly every single possible misinterpretation and nitpicking argument that can and will be made on it flashes before your eyes and ur like ok nvm close post

heās right thoā¦
what happened with jordan peele that after years of comedy he just casually stepped into the role of The horror auteur of the decade
like i understand thereās a lot of overlap in the genres and in his work but i mean this guy was a sketch comedy person for years and then switched over to horror for his directorial debut and that one movie was so well done and struck such a chord with people (even winning for screenplay and being nominated for best picture despite being a low budget, black led film of the least award grabbing genre) that heās already one of the respected auteurs of horror by the time the trailers for his next projects drop
in my brief experience in theater I learned that comedic acting is wayy harder to do than acting in dramas. In comedies, usually the characters ACT very seriously and itās often the context that makes it funny. Itās why comedic actors can usually do serious roles pretty well but dramatic actors often have harder times with comedies
Itās worth noting that his TV show Key & Peele may technicality have been sketch comedy but each episode was basically a collection of short films, many using Horror and Race as subjects. Iād wager almost all of them having heavy involvement by Peele as a writer, actor, producer, and probably director too. Thatās five seasons worth of crash course filmmaking on top of any other experience he may already have.
Get Out was also produced by Blumhouse, which is a production company that will give a very small budget worth of money and a wide release to basically anyone who asks. Itās kinda great because it means anyone from first time directors to people who want to use themes big studios would scoff at (both of which apply to Peele) can get stuff made.
To sum up: Peele is an incredibly smart and talented guy with way more film making experience that people give him credit for who saw a way to make a mark and took it.
Iām not an actor but among writers itās a known adage that āhorror is comedy without a punchlineā.Ā The audience usually doesnāt notice this because the punchline usually provides relief too quickly to consciously notice, but structurally, itās true. Comedy is harder, because you have to sell the horror AND THEN the punchline.
So anytime people want to talk about Jordan Peeleās switch from comedy to horror, I always want to bring up this sketch, which is basically horror ā but with a few key things that transition it to comedy.Ā
Thing that makes it comedy: Absurdity.
The juxtaposition of the bad news with ā80s competitive aerobics
The overly long cue cards that were nonetheless written in apparently under a minute, for at most a one cue-card message, just to apparently unnecessarily draw out things out
The apologetic look on the card holderās face, while the director mimes a little dance that in no way matches the choreography
The idea that somehow the main character is supposed to answer these questions while heās dancing? Live on air?
Imagine sitting at home and what these guys wouldāve looked like ā the one dude looking off camera and mouthingĀ āmotive??ā, etc. Without knowing the story, thatās a pretty funny visual
The idea that anyone would go to these lengths to win, again, ā80s competitive aerobics
However, note the horror elements:
The tension of more and more revealed information, changing from accident to not-an-accident to suspicion to revengeĀ
The music starts as funny (and sets the scene), but itās on an unending loop, again raising the tension as we wait for it to resolve ā and it doesnāt
Actually, the music cues in general, along with the switch back and forth between the grainyĀ ā80s video recording and the more slick and darkĀ āreal timeā camerawork, are both very horror-tastic
āKeep dancingā
The dancersā smiles are really interesting ā they start very fake and open-mouthed, with a lot of teeth, and then the main characterās transitions to a grimace, which maintains the open mouth with lots of teeth, but has a very different meaning. Then, as the scene progresses, the other characterās smile ā while looking essentially the same as it started at the top of the scene ā appears suddenly sinister
The idea that someone youāve worked with for potentially months ā talked to, choreographed with, probably stayed at the same hotels, bonded over the bagels on the craft table ā has been planning to kill your entire family
Alternately: What if it really was an accident? So instead weāre watching the total breakdown of a man into paranoia and undeserved murderous rage
You can do this with a lot of Key and Peele sketches ā there are a ton of horror elements, and what tips them toward comedy are the levels of absurdity and, to a degree, the resolutions (i.e., the punchlines described previously).Ā āTurbulenceā is another good example of this, I think, along withĀ āBlack People Telepathyā,Ā āWeird Playlistā, and āThe Telemarketerā.
*feels sad about something* oh well, at least I have my superior taste in arts & culture
me @ straight people: oh my god just ask it the offensive way i donāt have time for this
