The Most Tumblr Punchline
I've noted before that my favorite punchline on Tumblr is "hang on, gotta look something up/okay that's funny."
Let me explain why:
It is a way to say "I don't get it" without blaming the joke or the teller.
It is a tacit admission of ignorance without shame or judgement.
It assumes responsibility for acquiring the knowledge the respondent doesn't already have.
It cues other people who Don't Get It to do the look-up themselves, allowing them to get that full impact of Getting It without derailing the post with explanations.
It gives subsequent readers, whether or not THEY got the joke, a little frisson of good feelings when they realize that someone else is now In On The Joke.
It not only makes the original joke funnier, it gets funnier the more often it's used.
To add 1 more, it’s also a great subversion of usual expectations, since it’s commonly held that if you need to take time to explain the joke it’s ruined because the comedic moment has passed. Finding the joke funny post-explanation turns this around and also affirms that, with context, the joke fucking slaps, whether or not the timing is consistent. Plus it’s got the joy of learning in there!!!

being a Bandit is pretty great. Just got a new place with a couple friends, in Doghammer Cave (long history of hammering dogs there). It's pretty nice for the area! Zero bedrooms zero bathrooms, but it's got a falling spikeball trap in the entrance and a couple big linear multipurpose rooms full of barrels. I put a couple gold coins in each barrel. Really makes it feel like home.
Our leader is Klade Doghammer (long history of hammering dogs). He's the only one of us with a name. He likes to sit in the last room (our house has a last room because it's linear) at a desk with a half-finished page of notebook about how he'll get revenge on the town someday. My best friend Female Archer Bandit said the people in the town don't even consider us human. She says if you stay a bandit long enough they kill you for money. Sometimes when she and I are alone on watch late at night I get a funny feeling in my bandit parts. I think I just heard the falling spikeball trap go off. We didn't invite anyone over today but I hope it's someone friendly. Being a bandit is pretty great.

Police Respond to “Break-In” Call, Find Bear Getting Beat Up by House Cat Officers were called to a home after neighbors reported a loud crash and a possible break-in. When police arrived, they found the back door smashed open, but it wasn’t a burglar. It was a black bear in the kitchen, trying to get into a bowl of cat food. Body-cam footage shows the homeowner’s cat standing between the bear and the food before suddenly swatting the bear in the face. The bear immediately turned around and ran back out through the broken door. No one was hurt, and wildlife officials say the bear was likely attracted by the smell of pet food. Police later posted a public reminder: “Lock your doors, secure pet food, and please do not rely on your cat as home security.” The cat, however, is reportedly undefeated.
